What did we learn on this night? Some of the prospects can really hit. Everyone brought their bats but the Fisher Cats. And the 51s, but they were off. Sadly, they almost out-performed the Fisher Cats' hitters.

Las Vegas off night

I have to say that I am really not enjoying the affiliation with Las Vegas... I have never felt so disconnected with a franchise given that games begin at 10 p.m. on most nights.

Akron 12 New Hampshire 0

The offensive woes in New Hampshire hit an all-time low tonight as the club managed just one hit on the night. Brad Emaus was 1-for-4. David Cooper was 0-for-4 and made two errors. Chris Gutierrez, back from the DL, was 0-for-2 with a walk and two Ks. Bryan Kervin was 0-for-3. Starting pitcher Randy Boone obviously did not have it on this night as he allowed seven (five earned) runs on five hits and a walk over four innings. Nate Starner also struggled and allowed five runs on five hits and a walk over just one inning. Adrian Martin worked three shutout innings and struck out three batters. The Fisher Cats were facing up-and-coming Indians prospect Jeanmar Gomez, who allowed just one hit and one walk over six innings of work.

Dunedin 8 St. Lucie 5

Ryan Page had one of his better outings for Dunedin. The right-hander allowed just two runs on nine hits (He walked no one) and he struck out two batters over 5.1 innings of work. Trystan Magnuson allowed one run on three hits over 1.2 innings of work. Robert Bell allowed two runs over two innings to finish out the game. Moises Sierra's prospect value continues to climb with a 4-for-4 night, which included two doubles and four RBI. He also walked. Darin Mastroianni, Kevin Ahrens, and Matt Liuzza each had two hits. Justin Jackson was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBI. Mastroianni had a triple and scored a run. John Tolisano had an 0-for-5 night with three Ks. Eric Thames is back from the DL, but he went 0-for-4.

Lansing 9 Great Lakes 8

The Lugnuts came out on the winning end of this slugfest. Henderson Alvarez had a rare off-night as he allowed five runs on six hits and a walk over 4.2 innings of work. Ryan Koch got the vulture win despite allowing three runs on four hits over 2.1 innings. Hunter Moody and Matt Daly worked scoreless innings. Chris Emanuele led the way with a 3-for-4 night. He also hit a double and scored one run. Balbino Fuenmayor went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Justin McClanahan made the most of his one hit with a three-run homer. Tyler Pastornicky was 1-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI.

Three Stars:
3. Adrian Martin for three shutout innings in New Hampshire
2. Chris Emanuele for a three-hit night that included a run scored
1. Moises Sierra for a 4-for-4 night with two doubles and four RBI

Might be okay to give the F-Cats a pass tonight thanks to Gomez.  He seems like the real deal.

Sierra looks like he's breaking out this year.  He turns 21 in December so he's similar to a college player getting drafted now.

College juniors (like Lind, Hill) are usually 21 when drafted.  Sierra is a year younger.   At age 21, Alex Rios was in the FSL and went .305/.344/.408 with a 27/55 W/K, and made the All-Star team as a centerfielder.  Sierra is ahead of that as a hitter, but Rios broke out the following year.

Sierra would have just finished his third year of College if he went that route.  I believe that would make him a junior.  Born in September 2008, he's older than James Paxton - a junior from Kentucky.

BA is reporting that the Jays have: Placed on temporarily inactive list: C J.P. Arencibia

Anyone know what's going down?

Most college juniors are 6 months to a year older than Sierra, as the draft list will attest.  Paxton is an exception, perhaps due to some kind of advanced standing for his superior Canadian education!

Does someone go on the temporary inactive list for reasons other than injury? That's scary news.

I had heard that JP was with family for a few days for a graduation or something of the like.

Russ Adams is back and starting at short tonight in Vegas.  I think the Jays should leave him there.  It's the only place his bat will play in the majors - his throwing problems, be they mental or mechanical, may be fixable over time.

Scott Campbell is also back from injury, albeit at Dunedin for now.

I agree re playing short.

Also, he went 3/4 with a walk by the way.

Jason Lane went OFF. 5/5 a double, two homers, and 6 RBI

On the other hand, Castro had his worst AAA start.

By the by, Adam Loewen is hitting .281 in his last nine games so there's signs of life there...

Another side note - it's WELL past the time Moises Sierra should be in New Hampshire! .444/1.246 in June...

They can safely leave Sierra in Dunedin all season, in my view.  He's 20 and struggled in Lansing last year.  He seems to have gained some control of the strike zone this year, and this has led to his success.  i would be happy to see him consolidate his gains.
Ryan Day - Friday, June 12 2009 @ 10:15 AM EDT (#201263) #
I'd consider moving Sierra up if he can keep his hot streak going until the end of June. He's been very good lately, but still hit just 250/341/276 in May, and had a rough time in Lansing last year. The strike zone improvement is a great sign, but he's not the kind of guy you rush unless you're sure he's got it all together.

I'm really liking Pastornicky lately. Good eye at the plate, nice speed... if his defence holds up, he could turn into quite a nice player.

If Sierra's putting up a 1.000 OPS in six weeks or so, it might not be a bad idea to give him 100 ABs at AA for a sneak preview.  It may help him next year.

At this point though, it remains to be seen if Sierra is having a hot streak, or a major break out.  It's fun to watch though - especially with the triumverate (Tolisano, Ahrens, Jackson) putting up vanilla numbers.

To counter my own point, given the relative ages, probably Mastroianni has to get bumped first assuming he keeps rolling along So probably August before Seirra gets moved if at all. But I for one would like to see him spend at least a month in AA if he's still hitting well in July.
