I would adapt a few more lines of the song to be baseball-themed, but that would be the lamest thing I've ever done.

Tacoma 7 at Las Vegas 4

Through seven innings Vegas held a 3-1 lead thanks to a strong outing from Brad Mills. Mills allowed a run on two hits over those seven frames while striking out five, though he also walked five and got 11 fly-outs to just five ground-outs. Unfortunately, the depleted Las Vegas bullpen, having already lost Josh Roenicke, Rommie Lewis and David Purcey to the big leagues, could not hold the lead. Sean "Ballpoint" Henn and "Hardly" Merkin Valdez each allowed three runs in their respective inning of work to let this one slip away.

In his first game for Las Vegas since 2009, organizational soldier Adam Calderone led the offense with three hits including a solo homer. It was not a banner day for the prospects - Brett Wallace and J.P. Arencibia combined for an 0-9 with 5 Ks. Chris Lubanski doubled, walked and K'ed in four trips.

Trenton 0 at New Hampshire 3

It was all Kyle Drabek. The Good Doctor (too soon to re-use the nickname?) was masterful on Monday, spinning eight innings of shut-out ball, allowing only four hits and one walk. If you want to nitpick, he only struck out four and allowed seven GBs to nine FBs, but hey, nobody's perfect. Except Roy Halladay.

Adam Loewen had the best day at the dish with a single and a double in three trips. Maestro Yanni doubled, Eric Thames had a pair of singles, Brad Emaus singled, walked and SFed (actually, maybe he had the best day at the dish), while David Cooper and Brian Jeroloman took 0-fers.

Dunedin - scheduled day off

Lansing at South Bend - Canceled

Three Stars!
3. Brad Mills - 7 IP, 1ER, 5Ks
2. Adam Calderone, Las Vegas - 3 hits, HR
1. Kyle Drabek, New Hampshire - 8 shut-out innings

For anyone interested in the Dominican Summer League, somehow the entire DSL got rained out on Monday, except for one game (extra-inning, no less) between the DSL Cubs and Mets.

  • This is a few days old, but I haven't seen it posted - five D-Jays have been named to the FSL North All-Star Team. The honourees are Tyler Pastornicky, Yan Gomes, Travis d'Arnaud, Henderson Alvarez, and Matt Daly.

Monday MLUs this year have frequently featured spotlights on one of the Jays' affiliates. Las Vegas finished up the series two weeks ago, and I took last week off, but this week we'll start over, because it's even more interesting to see how those performances have changed over the course of the season.

Hitters

I've added a new column - cOPS stands for change in OPS since the first update. This was only calculated for players who had been full-time players up until the first update.

My fellow Londoner Brad McElroy has been very impressive, with a great slash line and K/BB ratio, though he's old for the level, as is Mark Sobolewski, who has slumped. Brad Glenn has fallen pretty hard. A.J. Jimenez is having a nice season after missing the first bit of it. Ryan Schimpf is striking out a lot for a college guy at A ball. Ryan Goins has improved since the last update, though he's also been whiffing a lot, especially for a shortstop. Sean Ochinko has been okay. Kenny Wilson and Eric Eiland have both slumped, especially Wilson.

Jimenez is probably the most interesting prospect here.

Pitchers

While A-ball may seem beneath the level of a college first-rounder, remember that Chad Jenkins signed late and didn't get any game action last year. He's been constantly improving and I would like to see him promoted at mid-season. To be honest, none of the other pitchers interest me that much. Lansing seems like a boring team prospectly compared to the other affiliates.

I'm guessing that title's the first Dr. Dre reference in Box history ...

Nice to see the cOPS stat ... an easy way to see who's hot and who's not ... gotta agree with you Dave that aside from Jenkins there aren't many pitchers of major interest here ... on the hitting side, the up the middle guys have potential but aren't big time prospects by any means, and that seems to be about it ...

any sleepers on this Lansing team?

Seeing Matt Wright's strikeout numbers I thought I'd check the Jays system for other high K/9 guys.

K/9 over 11...
Tim Collins: 15.2, AA, 20 years old
Matt Wright: 12.0, A, 23 years old
Joel Carreno: 11.9, A+, 23 years old, starter
Alan Farina: 11.2, A+, 23 years old
David Purcey: 11.1, AAA, 28 years old (now majors)

7 more guys are between 9 and 9.9, all relievers except Cecil (stats are minors only) and Aaron Loup who started 4 games and relived 10 times (22, A ball, see above).

And for fun... 2 guys have walked 9 per 9 innings: Juan Hernandez (1 walk in 1 inning) and Vince Bongiovanni (14 2/3 IP, 15 walks, age 27 in AA).

Another couple of moves for the Jays AA team in NH (courtesy of the Game Notes just posted on the FCats website).

  • Brad Emaus promoted to AAA
  • Al Quintana down to AA

IIRC, this will be Emaus' first taste above AA right?

Regardless, good luck to Brad he's earned it!

Las Vegas looked like they had some more injuries yesterday.  Hoffpauir and Phillips left the game and Dopirak ended up at third base.

It looks like Sean Shoffit is moving up from Dunedin to New Hampshire to replace Calderone.

Emaus must be replacing the injured Hoffpauir at 2B, one would presume?  If it's an injury replacement at 2B, Emaus might not be staying at AAA for the full season.  On the other hand, if Emaus is slotted at 3B at Vegas (unlikely, but possible), it could be a more significant promotion that could mean he'll be at Vegas for the rest of this season, and maybe will have a crack at the Jays next season.

John Sickels doesn't seem to have an overly high opinion on Kyle Drabek. This was posted today at his website (www.minorleagueball.com):

**Kyle Drabek had a good start last night for Double-A New Hampshire, throwing eight shutout innings, allowing four hits and one walk while fanning four. On the season, the Blue Jays prospect is now 6-4, 2.87 with a 47/25 K/BB in 63 innings, with 57 hits allowed. The ERA looks pretty of course and generally he has pitched well, but his K/IP and K/BB ratios are not spectacular. Between this year and last year, Drabek now has 26 starts of Double-A under his belt, going 14-6, 3.34 in 159 innings, with 149 hits allowed and a 123/56 K/BB ratio. These are the numbers of a solid prospect, but more of a future inning-eater type than a dominating ace. Drabek's bloodlines and status as the centerpiece of a major trade get him a lot of press, but I think people should expect him to develop into a number three type starter, not a total replacement for Roy Halladay.

Wow.  A bit surprised at Emaus' promotion - he's been a bit light on the lumber lately.  I though we'd see Bowman up first.  But maybe the Jays wanted Diaz-Emaus up there for defence purposes.

Ne'er mind....another casualty of waiting 10mins before hitting submit.

Just noticed that Phillips is also injured.  Phillips has been the 3B for Vegas recently.  In that case, Emaus might indeed be playing at 3B, which would be significant.  Or is it possible that Bowman could be promoted as well?   If there are two injuries in the Vegas infield, they will need two replacements from New Hampshire, and so far only Emaus has been promoted.  So I guess we're waiting for the other shoe to drop.   Unless, of course, the two injuries yesterday were not severe enough to warrant a DL trip for both Phillips and Hoffpauir.  Perhaps one of them is day-to-day and could be back in action in a game or two.

These are the numbers of a solid prospect, but more of a future inning-eater type than a dominating ace.

This is more than fine with me. Nobody had Shaun Marcum, Ricky Romero, or Brett Cecil labelled as dominating aces, and all have shown me that they can be. I think the majority of top pitching prospects have "ace-ceilings" but end up settling in as "#2-#4" starters, and if the Jays get a consistent one of those out of the Halladay trade along with any sort of regular contribution from Wallace and/or D'Arnaud you'd have view the return of the trade pretty favourably.

"I think people should expect him to develop into a number three type starter"

Drabek's minor-league stats are actually better than Doc's minor league stats, almost across the board. Not that that necessarily means a lot. In any case, I would actually be happy if Drabek turned into a solid number three starter (say, with Brett Cecil-like potential). And isn't it a bit premature to decide his future? Ricky Romero didn't really figure it all out until his mid-20s.
SJE - Tuesday, June 01 2010 @ 07:06 PM EDT (#216012) #
I am not concerned about John Siskel`s opinion of Kyle Drabek. He is in New Hampshire to develope, not to pad his stats. He may or may not be more than a number three starter, but he will never be more that without developing his changeup, cutter, and seems to sinking the ball more. AA stated earlier in the spring that to compete in the AL EAST you must have a starting rotation that consist of number 3 starters or better.

The Jays run of injuries continues..... Randy Boone and Darin Mastroianni left the Fisher Cat game tonight with injuries.
