Some mighty nice days on the farm as two stud pitchers started and won while a number of top prospects (and former top prospects) swung the big bats.

Las Vegas 5    Sacramento 2

J.P. Arencibia and Brad Emaus led the way for the 51s.  Arencibia doubled twice and drove in a run while Emaus launched his sixth homer of his AAA career.

Robert Ray started and won for Las Vegas going five innings and allowing a run on four hits and four walks against three strikeouts.  This was clearly Ray's best performance since throwing a shutout on May 9th.  Three relievers combined to finish things off with Jeremy Accardo picking up his 21st save.

New Hampshire 10    Trenton 4

David Cooper and Darin Mastroianni each had two hits and two RBI for the Fisher Cats on Sunday.  Mastroianni's day was the most impressive, though as he scored twice, tripled, walked and stole a base.  Adam Loewen singled and walked twice while Adeiny Hechavarria had a hit, an RBI and scored a pair.  And Eric Thames drove in his team leading 83rd run of the year.  Nice day, all around.

The good times continued on the mound as Kyle Drabek picked up the win in going six and allowing a run on three hits and a walk while striking out three.  Tryston Magnuson was roughed up in his two innings, allowing three runs.

Dunedin 10    Charlotte 4

Same score in Hi-A.  The Wallace-Gose trade is paying off immediate dividends- what is it about AA deals that all seem to turn golden right away?- as Anthony Gose homered as part of a 3-for-5 day at the plate.  Mark Sobolewski had an identical day while Mike McDade fell a hit short in making it a trifecta.  McDade's homer was his 19th.  Also, Ryan McClanahan homered and drove in four as part of a two-hit day.  Again, nice game all around.

Henderson Alvarez was a bit of a mixed bag on Sunday but was certainly good enough for the win.  Alvarez went six and allowed four runs on six hits but didn't walk anyone while striking out three.  Evan Crawford went the final three for the save.

Lansing 8    Bowling Green 10

Kevin Ahrens continues to swing a hot bat as he went 2-for-2 with 2 HRs, two walks, two RBI, and four runs.  Jake Marisnick made his Lo-A debut and found it two his liking going 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI.  Sean Ochinko continued his nice season with two doubles while Balbino Fuenmayor hit his 8th HR but predictably struck out twice.

Egan Smith started and got smacked around to the tune of eight runs on six hits and three walks over three innings.

State College 7    Auburn 6

The Doubledays led this one 6-0 heading into the 8th but a five-spot followed by single runs in the 9th and 10th sent them to defeat.  Matthew Nuzzo swung the hottest bat in going 3-for-5 with a double and a triple while Stephen McQuail hit his third homer of the year.

Daniel Webb started and had one of his best professional starts in going five and allowing no runs on four hits and three walks while striking out six but a quartet of relievers conspired to rob him of his first career victory.

DSL Blue Jays 3    DSL Angels 1

The DSL Jays won this one despite not driving in a single run thanks in large part to five Angels errors.  The best day at the plate belonged to Sonny Javier who was 1-for-3 with two walks.

Two pitchers split the duties for the Jays as Julio Carmona started and went 4.1 allowing three hits and four walks while striking out four.  Victor German went the rest of the way giving up the sole run on five hits and a walk with one strikeout.

I'd love to see the Maestro get himself a call-up in September - he's a fun player who could add a serious base-stealing dimension to our bench.  What are the reports of his defense in NH?

A couple of weeks ago, I was thinking that not even GOD could resurrect Kevin Ahrens career - But if this demotion,

Abandoning of switching-hitting & better instruction could salvage Ahrens - well, it would be one of the great

miracles since that parting of the red sea thing.

Spent the weekend watching 2 Doubledays' games and saw a few ex-Jays/Jays farmhands in Buffalo yesterday. My thoughts in no particular order are:

Auburn: Marcus Knecht was the best hitter I saw for Auburn...doubled and tripled in the first game and seems to move well in the outfield. In the second game he was the DH and lost his plate discipline and struck out twice on sliders that were nowhere near the plate.

Carlos Perez - DH one game and caught the next. Was 0-7 but you could feel a bit of a buzz in the crowd when he came up, so he's clearly done many good things this year. No one tried to steal on him.

Matt Nuzzo (3B) - struck out 3 times in the first game before getting ejected for arguing a close play at third base

Jonathan Jones - made a couple of nice plays in centre field...seems like a singles hitter and he didn't do anything at the plate

Andy Fermin - played one game at third and made several good defensive plays...was pretty quiet with the bat

Lance Durham - played one game at first and looked ok...flew out a couple of times, but definitely does not have the body type or power of his Dad

Matthew Johnson (2B) - the good was that he had 3 hits in 2 games - the bad was that he made 4 mental mistakes, including forgetting to tag a runner, being a bit indecisive on a double ball and then throwing it away and getting no one on the play, running with his head down and not noticing the runner ahead of him had stopped, etc... Maybe I just caught him on a couple of off-days but that amount of mental mistakes is not going to endear him to the higher-ups.

Steven McQuail (OF) - didn't hit much and often took the wrong first step on fly balls

Marcus Brisker (OF) - threw out someone at third all the way from the fence - got one hit and was caught stealing on a great throw

Gustavo Pierre (SS) - played well in the field - but showed no plate discipline at all - swung at the first pitch almost every time and got 2 hits over the 2 games...he's got a long way to go

Y. Hernandez (1B) - had only 1 double and 4 homers coming into the games (no singles!) but he did get a single on Friday - seemed to take big swings and looked decent at first

Jack Murphy (C) - went 0-5 but hit the ball fairly well - broke a couple of bats and was down for about 5 minutes after a foul ball caught him in a sensitive area

PITCHERS -
Jesse Hernandez - nothing special as he gave up 2 runs on 5 hits in 3 innings
Tyler Powell - looked ok, but gave 3 runs on 6 hits in 3 innings
Juan Hernandez - pitched pretty well but struggled a bit with his control
Dayton Marze - threw hard and had a good breaking ball and good command - struck out 3 of 4 batters
Michael Kelly - couldn't settle down and wild-pitched in the winning run

Drew Hutchison - had good command, threw hard, and seemed to have a good breaking ball and change-up - pitched 6 shutout innings, allowing 2 hits and striking out 7
Zach Outman - threw in the high 80's - command was not good - gave up 2 unearned runs as he fielded a bunt and when he went to throw it to second, the ball completely slipped out of his hands and went backwards towards the plate
Drew Permison - very small righty (Frasor-sized) who looked great - 3 K's - good fastball and a hard slider

For Batavia they had a former catcher named Houston Summers come in and throw the slowest and weirdest looking knuckleballs I have ever seen and Auburn had no clue had to hit them

At the Buffalo game, there were a number of Blue Jay/Las Vegas connections. Old friend Russ Adams was in left field and did absolutely nothing. For some reason, he was in the postgame home run hitting contest where he registered a donut.

Michael Barrett was the Bisons' catcher and his 0-4 night put him at 1-18 for the season. His bat speed seemed really slow. Jorge Padilla was asked to bunt two men up and let two strikes go by before grounding into a double play. Chris Agulia was 0-4 for Lehigh Valley, and Rich Thompson was 1-4. Brian Bocock was 0-4 as well.

A fun trip...three really nice ballparks and three really close games.

Thanks for the posts... here's a press release excerpt from the New Hampshire Fisher Cats this morning.  Looks like Ahrends has some company in the recent achievement department...

B.J. LaMura (5-3, 4.31) has been named Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the span ending Sunday, August 1.  The 29-year old from Mineola, New York posted two wins for the Fisher Cats in his two starts, totaling 12 innings of work and a 0.75 ERA.  The starter recorded six shutout innings in an 8-3 victory over the Harrisburg Senators -

Sean Nolin was promoted to Auburn and got his first start tonight.  He seems to be on a strict pitch count, and was pulled in the third.

I'm watching the 51's game on MILB.TV, Arencibia is currently 1-2 with 2 BB one intentional and a homerun.  The homerun was an absolute laser to left field, looked very similar to some of the bombs Bautista has been hitting this year.

Diamonds38, thanks for the scouting report.  You say Hutchison threw hard, were there radar gun readings in the park or was it just your impression?
diamonds38 - Wednesday, August 04 2010 @ 09:19 AM EDT (#219795) #
On Hutchison, the radar gun sometimes worked and sometimes didn't. From the ones that they managed to get up on the scoreboard, I think he was throwing 89-92 and he was in complete command for his entire outing. Not many hard hit balls, and the ones that were well hit were sucked up by Fermin at third.
