When I was in Lansing I took some shots of Garis Pena showing how to play shortstop.  I added in a shot of Scott Gracey to congratulate him on his promotion.  Finally I link to videos of Drew Hutchison; Sean Nolin; Egan Smith; and Misaul Diaz with two of the plate appearances ending in fly balls to Jake Marisnick in centre-field.

Garis Pena is a very smooth looking shortstop who is currently on the DL.  These shots were taken during batting practice.

While most of these are self-evident, note that Pena has lowered his butt, that is the key for infielders, don't bend at the waist, get your butt down to better keep your balance.  And note in the next picture that Pena is fielding the ball while already his feet are set to throw to first base.

Scott Gracey had great numbers for Lansing this season.  While I was down there Gracey came into a game with the bases loaded and nobody out, and he got out of it and Lansing went on to win the game.  Gracey had a 1.71 ERA for Lansing and had given up 11 hits in 21 innings.

Finally I posted four vidoes to Vimeo.  They show Misaul Diaz; Sean Nolin; Drew Hutchison; and Egan Smith pitching in Lansing.

maybe posted elsewhere but John Sickels takes a look at Brett lawrie and likes what he sees:

Based on his track record, and what I saw Sunday afternoon, I am convinced that Brett Lawrie has everything needed to be a superstar. The only things that could get in the way are injuries or his own personality.

You can visit his page to read more but since we are all wondering about the D:

My view of Lawrie's defense is this: he has more than enough range and athleticism for third base, has a quick release, and a strong enough arm. He just needs more experience.

Short version:

To summarize, I really believe in Lawrie's bat. He has the tools to be a good defensive third baseman with experience. He plays very hard on the field. You don't have to be a nice guy to be a great player. If he avoids injuries, grows up a bit and learns to channel his energy and intensity, he's going to be a monster.

Me likey!!

Excellent Gerry!!

TamRa, you are right about Lawrie, last night Jerry & Alan sounded impatient for a Lawrie promotion.

As they should be. The team is costing itself wins by keeping Lawrie down at this point. It's one thing in the beginning of the season to say he needs work at 3B and you want to see what you have in some other guys. At this point, though, he's done everything you've asked from him in AAA, and we are nearing the 1/3rd mark of the season and are still in contention. Blue Jays 3Bs have hit .182/.237/.284 this year with 11 errors, so it would take quite the bad effort for Lawrie to not be able to significantly improve this team right now, even if he makes a couple of errors along the way. This isn't about being impatient - that would have manifested itself as Lawrie breaking camp with the team. It's about wanting to see the Jays field the best team they can without compromising a guy's development, and it's hard to argue that point hasn't passed. Sure, he can get called up and struggle, but at least see that to be the case and send him down if he needs more seasoning. It's painful to see KC calling up guys like Hosmer & Duffy while AA makes it blatantly obvious he's keeping Lawrie down because of Super 2 considerations. Now here come the white knights.

Not because you are stashing him in the BBFL, 92-93? ;)

I wouldn't go as far as to say that Lawrie has nothing left to learn in the minors, but I can't imagine that he will be any worse than the (non) production the Jays have gotten out of 3B so far this year, and I think it behooves the team to call him up at this point.

With that being said, as I've mentioned before, the strategy so far has been defensible - Lawrie needs development, to learn 3B, is only  20, etc. At this point though, they need to call him up.

Oh, and I really don't think he is being held down for super-2 reasons, everyone seems to agree that that provision will be eliminated in the next collective bargaining agreement.

Thankfully the Blue Jays don't need Lawrie to stave off relegation.
