A necessarily brief update; plus Lansing ties a Midwest League record, and not in a good way.

Las Vegas: Scheduled Off Day

New Hampshire 2 at Trenton 3

New Hampshire scored in the 7th and 9th, but it wasn't enough to overcome a rehabbing Phil Hughes, who allowed 1 run and struck out 8 in 6.1 innings. Chad Jenkins was his counterpart for the Cats and he was decent, allowing 10 hits over 7 innings, walking and whiffing 2 apiece. The only problem was he allowed 3 runs, which on this day was too many. New Hampshire could only muster 6 hits, and half of them were by Ricardo Nanita. Anthony Gose and Travis d'Arnaud both singled, but struck out 2 and 3 times respectively, and Mike McDade hit a solo home run and walked.

Lakeland 0 at Dunedin 5

Nestor Molina stayed red hot in this one, allowing 4 hits while striking out 4 in 5 innings. Obviously he didn't allow a run, and in his last 10 starts he has allowed 1 or 0 runs in 7 of them. Matt Wright and Steve Turnbull finished things out with 3 and 1 perfect innings respectively. On offense everyone other than Kevin Nolan chipped in with a hit. Ryan Schimpf, Kevin Ahrens and Jon Talley each had 2 in fact, with the first two both doubling. Those were the only two extra base hits, and everyone else in the lineup singled (Jackson, Jiminez, Ochinko, Glenn, Mcelroy) with Jiminez and McElroy stealing bases to boot.

Lansing 1 at Dayton 7

This one was over just as soon as it began pretty much, and it was ugly in every which way you could imagine. Sean Nolin was lifted in the second inning after allowing a home run and a single to the first two batters he faced; I presume he was injured in some fashion. Sam Strickland replaced him and didn't fare much better, giving up 4 runs in 4 innings. Either way it wouldn't have mattered much, as Lansing did this with the bats:

Lansing Top of the 1st
  • Markus Brisker strikes out swinging.
  • Carlos Perez singles on a line drive to right fielder Yorman Rodriguez.
  • Jake Marisnick reaches on force attempt, fielding error by shortstop Billy Hamilton. Carlos Perez to 2nd.
  • Marcus Knecht strikes out swinging.
  • K. C. Hobson reaches on throwing error by shortstop Billy Hamilton. Carlos Perez to 3rd. Jake Marisnick to 2nd.
  • Michael Crouse strikes out swinging.

Lansing Top of the 2nd

  • Matt Nuzzo strikes out swinging, catcher Tucker Barnhart to first baseman Dominic D'Anna.
  • Bryson Namba strikes out swinging.
  • Garis Pena strikes out swinging.
Lansing Top of the 3rd
  • Markus Brisker called out on strikes.
  • Carlos Perez called out on strikes.
  • Jake Marisnick strikes out swinging, catcher Tucker Barnhart to first baseman Dominic D'Anna.
Lansing Top of the 4th
  • Marcus Knecht strikes out swinging.
  • K. C. Hobson strikes out swinging.
  • Michael Crouse called out on strikes.
Lansing Top of the 5th
  • Matt Nuzzo singles on a ground ball to second baseman Ronald Torreyes.
  • Bryson Namba strikes out swinging.
  • Garis Pena grounds into double play, third baseman David Vidal to second baseman Ronald Torreyes to first baseman Dominic D'Anna. Matt Nuzzo out at 2nd.

If you're scoring at home, thats 10 consecutive strikeouts, and it took until 1 out in the 5th to retire a batter on a ball in play. Let's just leave it at that.

Everett 3 at Vancouver 8

Vancouver only struck out 7 times, so already things are improving. Justin Nicolino picked up his second win in this one, allowing 2 runs, 1 earned, on 5 hits and 2 walks in 5 innings. He also struck out 4. Alesone Escalante pitched another 4 innings, allowing an unearned run. Roan Salas and Eli Boike both had 2 hits for the Canadians, while Shane Opitz and Matt Newman both drove in 2 runs.

Bristol 7 at Bluefield 9

Bluefield won a slugfest after a 2 out error to put a second man aboard in the bottom of the 9th was followed by an Art Charles home run to win the game. It was one of only 8 Bluefield hits, with Daniel Arcila and Chris Hawkins both picking up 2; Gustavo Pierre also homered. Myles Jaye and Aaron Sanchez both gave up 3 runs; Jaye in 4 innings, Sanchez in 2.1 - Sanchez also walked 4 and gave up 4 hits while getting punchouts on 4 of his 7 outs.

GCL Phillies 5 at GCL Jays 4

DSL Tigers 0 at DSL Jays 5

Third Star! Ricardo Nanita - 3/4, 2B, RBI

Second Star! Nestor Molina - 5 IP, 4 H, 4K, 0 R

First Star! Art Charles - 1/3, BB, 2 R, 3 RBI, SB, GW HR

In the Bluefield game Art Charles made an error with two out in the ninth inning that allowed the go ahead run to score.  To make up for that error he hit a three run, walk-off, home run in the bottom of the ninth.

A Charles has better Avg & power this year. At 6'6" he has good reach, I wonder how his defense & the other parts of his game are. Excellent 20th round pick in 2010.

I had a dream last night that the Jays traded "seven pitchers" for Carl Crawford. Seems like a lot to give up, though we could have been talking about the B.J. LaMuras of the world.

I'm going to try and plan a trip out to Bluefield (caught the second to last game in Pulaski, might as well start over with Bluefield). Is there a good guide somewhere to the prospects who will be playing there this year? Any suggestions on who to watch for or which starter I should try to see?

I had a dream...

Martin Luther Rutt has a bit of a ring to it. But, a corner outfielder like Crawford?  That is truly a wacky dream.

Speaking of strange, Farrell's decision to give Thames the start against a LHP last night was surprising, but it all worked out.  July promises to be fun.

Here is Marc Hulet`s wonderful guide to short season ball for the Blue Jays.  A must read prior to planning your trip.

Dreaming about 0.0 WAR players at the halfway mark? At least fantasize about something worthwhile.

It could be that the gods sent Dave a false dream - this happened to Agamemnon in the Iliad. In which case the clear message is: don't trade seven pitchers for Carl Crawford!

On the plus side, at least his dream didn't recommend trading for Brad Wilkerson, Kevin Mench, or Shannon Stewart.

I wonder if AA has these kinds of dreams. "Hey Tony, you know who I think we should acquire? Carlos Villanueva. Don't ask me why. I just know!"

Wow, that short season preview by Marc Hulet looks outstanding. I know what I'm going to be reading over the long weekend.

So before we get too excited about prospects in Bluefield, it should be noted that their home stadium is tiny. This site says it is 335 down the lines and 365 to center. So lets hope the kids learn how to get some ground balls.

I went to my first Vancouver Canadians game in the Blue Jays era last night just to see Justin Nicolino. To my untrained amateur eyes he looked pretty good. Over the 5 innings, I counted 3 hard hit balls. There's clear disparity between his stuff and some of the other pitchers that pitched in this game.
AWeb - Thursday, June 30 2011 @ 02:18 PM EDT (#237800) #
At least the 10 straight K's came against a pitcher who gets a lot of them, Daniel Renken (11K/9). They knocked around the same pitcher two starts ago (4IP, 10 hits, 7 R, 2 HR, but still 7K). A lot of those guys will be talking about Renken as old men, and that day everyone struck out against him, and how it was the best stuff they had ever seen (which could be true, I know nothing of Reds prospects).

Perfect for the day before a three-day weekend.  Thanks, Ryan.  I particularly liked the line,'"It's in her hands today," Lee said without a trace of irony." , in light of our discussions of yesterday. No exclamation required.

She who must be obeyed went to the Doc today (not Roy - a different Doc) and I - being her obedient servant - drove her. While waiting I was mucking about with the Jay's line-up - now and in the future. I decided on the following....

THREE SETS OF OUTFIELDERS (from Left to Center to Right):

Thames, Snider, Bautista
Knecht, Gose, Sierra
Loewen, Marisnick, Crouse

Is it just me or are those not nine freakin' good outfielders! I think ANY set of those guys would be impressive!

I also mused...

FIVE SETS OF STARTING PITCHERS:

Romero, Morrow, Alvarez, Hutchison, McGuire

Molina, Drabek, Syndergaard, Micolino, Murphy

Sanchez, Stewart, Wojeichowski, Carreno, Jenkins

Dyson, Taylor, Nolin, Jaye, Kelly

McGowan, Estrada, Carmona, Beck, Cecil

Not to mention:

The guys just drafted and: Reyes, Villaneuva, Litsch, Lawrence and last years DSL Player of the year, Eyerys Guerrero.

IS WE IS - OR - IS WE IS - LOADED? WOW.

After he selects who he wants to keep, our little Greek Trader is going to have lots of pretty little trinkets to offer to other teams for all manner of juicy returns. I really wish I was AA.

No sarcasm.

Travis Snider is back in the lineup and DH'ing tonight.

Kyle Drabek has pitched two shutout innings and hasn't walked anyone.

The Jays announced today that Dustin McGowan will join Dunedin on Saturday. He can stay on a rehab assignment for up to 30 days. 30 days takes him to August 1, the day after the trade deadline when presumably the pressure on roster spots in the bullpen might be alleviated somewhat.

Fortuitous timing by the Jays.
TamRa - Friday, July 01 2011 @ 02:18 AM EDT (#237810) #
Wilner tweets, per Farrell, that McGowan does NOT have to be called up at the end of 30 days - if he's deemed unready he can be "inactive" (i.e. no game action) for 7 days (on the DL?) and restart the 30 day clock.

Not sure I understand how they can do this with him yet it's not commonly done.

Also, Justin Jackson tweet he's headed back to AA - no idea the circumstances.

TamRa - Friday, July 01 2011 @ 02:26 AM EDT (#237811) #
Drabek went 6 IP tonight, six hits (only one for extra bases), one run, three Ks - and ZERO walks.

Dusting off ye olde CBA, Article XIX(C), titled Disabled List-Assignment to a Minor League Club, stipulates that a player on a major league disabled list can be assigned to a minor league team for the purpose of rehabilitation for up to twenty days for position players, and thirty days for pitchers for each injury, or reoccurrence of an injury. So if McGowan gets injured during the 30 days, the clock starts again. McGowan has said that if he gets another major injury, then he is calling it quits. I really hope that he comes back, even if just in the role of power reliever because when he was on, he was something special to watch. Screw you, Jeff Baker!
Kelekin - Friday, July 01 2011 @ 03:18 AM EDT (#237813) #
While Drabek's start was encouraging, it was still only 58% strikes.  He worked a lot of counts.  Either way, improvement, but still a ways to go.
China fan - Friday, July 01 2011 @ 04:34 AM EDT (#237814) #
Regarding the McGowan rehab issue:  if he's not quite ready after 30 days, can the Jays simply say "he's had a recurrence of his forearm strain" or something vague like that, and call it "an injury" so that they can sit him down for 7 days and start another 30 days of minor-league playing time?
bpoz - Friday, July 01 2011 @ 08:43 AM EDT (#237816) #
Mylegacy, I enjoy reading your comments, and seem to sit back in my chair whenever I see your contribution. Some Bauxites I see as furiously typing away but you in an easy chair, which did not make sense unless you use a laptop.

The product of all involved is good.

Next question. Is there an over/under for your $20mil draft budget? Put me down for over. Will you be using a calculator or fingers?

Every time a player goes on the disabled list, the team, essentially, has to prove that he is actually injured with a doctor's note, or something to that effect. The team has to submit a notice to the commissioner's office, along with a diagnosis from a physician. As well, a player's written consent is necessary for minor league rehabilitation to occur. I'm sure if the Jays front office did get in trouble for something like this, they would have a plan for their defense, like yelling "Hey, look over there! Frank McCourt is trying to sell 1st, 2nd and 3rd base!" and then run out the back door.

For Sam, Today is July 1st, so thanks in advance for all your digging regarding the Intl FAs.

I know that the less we hear means that more likely we sign more.

I have total faith in our ability to handle these delicate negotiations. Rules aside, culturally we probably have to go through the father & an uncle or 2. I know or think I know that that my 6'2" 180lb son is a boy still and not a man. So the most $, within reason, does not get him. My confidence in the signing team's personnel to look after him would be a strong factor. OK so I am soft.
sam - Friday, July 01 2011 @ 12:52 PM EDT (#237820) #
Thank you for the shout out. I am looking forward to tomorrow. Last year by this time we basically knew who we would be signing, this year not so much. I think the Jays will sign at least one player to a seven figure bonus.
