The farm only went 2-6, but the most interesting team on the farm prospect-wise won in a blowout, and there were plenty of good prospect performances.

Las Vegas 9 at Salt Lake 10

I was about to say Las Vegas is getting a little boring what with the promotions of Thames and Snider, then they go out and have a game like this: down 10-3 in the ninth inning, the 51s came roaring back and nearly sent it to extras. Four of those runs came on a Ryan Shealy grand slam, and those weren't Shealy's only RBIs of the day - he also cashed in two with a double and one on a groundout. Yes, that's seven RBIs.

Jesse Litsch got roughed up, allowing seven runs on 12 hits in just three innings. Ronald MacDonald (aka Mike Uviedo) finished off the game with 5 innings of solid relief.

Some other 51s had good days at the plate: Darin Mastroianni, Manny Mayorson and Jason Lane had three hits, and David Cooper three walks.

New Britain 1 at New Hampshire 11

After Adeiny Hechavarria struck out to open the bottom of the first, Anthony Gose came up and, well, made another out. At home plate. The speedster blasted a triple and tried to extend it into an inside-the-parker before getting thrown out at home. To atone, he would hit a regular homer just three innings later and later added a double. With Gose's speed, falling a single short of the cycle is probably the most likely almost-cycle.

Chad Jenkins was excellent, though he didn't exactly need to be. Jenkins pitched eight innings, allowing five hits and a single run on a solo homer, striking out four. He got plenty of run support from the aforementioned Gose, Mike McDade (1B, 2 2B) and Callix Crabbe (grand slam). Jenkins has a 3.34 ERA in five AA starts, though his GB:FB ratio has slipped considerably.

Dunedin 5 at Lakeland 2

The excellent pitching continued in Dunedin where 2011's biggest surprise Nestor Molina continued his fantastic season. Molina hurled five innings, allowing five hits, all singles, and hitting a batter, while striking out six and walking none. After tonight, Molina has the eighth best K/BB in the minor leagues at just under 11 (87/8).

The bats counted 12 hits, including four of the extra-base variety, and four walks, and probably deserved to score more than five runs. Jonathan Diaz, Sean Ochinko and Brad Glenn each reached base thrice, and Kevin Nolan hit a homer. Wes Etheridge, not to be outdone by Molina, notched his twenty-ninth save, most in the minor leagues... by six. Or about 20%. That's about where Bautista was in homers at the end of May. Except that homers actually matter. But, you know.

Lake County 7 at Lansing 4

Just a generic loss for the Luggies. Not much exciting to report - Lance Durham had three hits, Matt Nuzzo one and two walks. Scott Gracey was the best pitcher, going two scoreless innings.

Vancouver 3 at Eugene 7

Interesting Prospect Justin Nicolino started on Monday night for Vancouver and lots of weird stuff happened - a few hits and walks, a few steals and balks (two), an error, a pickoff and a run scored on a double play meant that Nicolino allowed three runs on seven base-runners in four innings. He also struck out seven.

None of the Canadians had more than one hit, but the Great Balbino reached base twice.

Princeton 5 at Bluefield 4

2010 draftee Aaron Sanchez got the start and was okay, allowing two earned runs in five innings. Sanchez walked and struck out one. Reliever Myles Jaye picked him up and pitched three scoreless innings... and then one non-scoreless inning. In the ninth, Prince tallied a couple of runs to eke out a one-run victory over Bluefield.

Carlos Ramirez swung the biggest stick for the Jays, homering and walking.

GCL Yankees 6 at GCL Jays 2

Nothing to see here. Dalton Pompey doubled and walked, stole a base, and scored each time he was on base.

DSL Braves 2 at DSL Jays 1

The DSL team always seems to be the only team to get a game in when everyone else gets rained out. They must have the only dome in the DR or something. Anyway, Jairo Labourt got the start and pitched four innings, allowing one unearned run on two hits and three walks, striking out two. 18-year-old Luis Zerpa pitched three perfect innings and struck out four. Jonathan Pumarol had two doubles.

Three Stars!
3. Anthony Gose - 2B, 3B, HR
2. Chad Jenkins - 8 IP, 1 R
1. Ryan Shealy - 7 RBIs

Where is the Aaron Sanchez we briefly knew and loved....the one who struck out 37 batters in 25 innings over two levels (rookie and low A).

I would love to hear a detailed report on him. The results are clearly not there -- not even close -- but why? Is his velocity down? Is he dealing with an injury? Change in mechanics?

He was the 2010 high-schooler I was most interested in seeing.

Aaron Sanchez is struggling with his fastball command... that's why he's struggled. It was the scouting report on him coming out of high school, too.

With our 3 supplemental picks last year, we took 2 pitchers many thought could have gone in the 1st round (Aaron Sanchez and Asher Wojciechowski), and what was viewed by many as a signability overdraft with the pick that was unprotected (Noah Syndergaard).  A year later and the only one impressing is Syndergaard, with the other 2 scuffling, and pretty badly in Wojo's case.

At least Sanchez is showing quick improvement in his 3 starts.  From 8 runs allowed in a couple of innings to 3 runs in a couple of innings to just 2 runs in 5 innings.  He's getting there.  Give him another couple of starts and we might be seeing what we hoped for.

Very nice start by Jenkins.  He's progressing well this year.

I'd like to see them move Etheridge up.  I had discounted him as a prospect due to his age, but after reading the article on him that was linked on another thread, I think they just may have caught themselves something when they signed him.

Sanchez just turned 19, so I don't know if his results even matter right now. (it's also a mere 3 games) Sure, it would be great if he was pitching well, but he was always going to be a long-term project.

Totally agree about Sanchez. It's all about development at this point.

Jenkins has an almost Scott Richmond-like R/L split in AA. All 4 HR he's allowed have come off LHB. I wonder whether he needs an extra pitch to get lefties out - a cutter, maybe?

My apologies if this is off topic and should be in another thread which I can't find. Simple question to those who have paid more attention to the annual draft than I.  When is it time to start panicking over the fact that the Jays have only signed 1 out of their first 22 picks?

August 15th at midnight is the deadline, so many deals won't be announced until then. MLB won't approve over-slot contracts until then, and there's often a domino effect while players & agents wait to see what everyone else got.

So it may be a month or so until anything significant happens, particularly regarding the higher picks.
sam - Tuesday, July 05 2011 @ 04:01 PM EDT (#238047) #

Not any time soon.  There hasn't been many leaks just yet, but near the end of July if we don't start hearing some industry rumours about players then concern would be appropriate.

Another factor, many of the players we selected will be waiting for other players to sign.  This year has been particularly slow in signings due to a number of uncertainties.  I suspect that the vast majority of players the Jays drafted will sign right before the deadline.

hypobole - Tuesday, July 05 2011 @ 04:15 PM EDT (#238048) #
We were more aggressive in the draft than any other team; almost all our early round picks will require overslot money. Even if deals have been worked out, there is no way MLB will allow the signings to be announced.
MatO - Tuesday, July 05 2011 @ 04:26 PM EDT (#238049) #
Not only will the early round picks require overslot money but when you're picking HS players in the middle rounds they're even more likely to require overslot to sign.  The early picks already have good slot money attached to them so there is more incentive to sign for slot but the middle rounds don't.  That's why Syndergaard and Sanchez signed early last year but a guy like Jaye didn't.  Looks like that won't be the case this year.
dawgatc - Tuesday, July 05 2011 @ 04:41 PM EDT (#238051) #
I think what mlb does with these contracts is soooooo stupid - they're going to approve them anyway ,so its just a year of development down the drain - in the meantime they approve outrageous bonuses for international signings all the time - at the same time you have to be concerned when your team has 1 guy under contract in your first 22 picks 1 month after the draft - thats a record for sure in futility as far as signing goes - makes you wonder if AA is for real or its more beeston b.s..
sam - Tuesday, July 05 2011 @ 05:12 PM EDT (#238052) #

dawgatc, I don't think you fully understand the process.  The Jays have always complained that the deadline is too late and would prefer it being earlier.

This year, the Jays selected a substantial amount of players who have significant leverage.  That is to say players who have options and project to go higher in the draft if they choose to not sign.  Every team selects these players, this year the Jays selected a substantial amount.

What happens is these players will wait and see what bonuses other players get and bargain to get a higher bonus.  As a result, players wait and bargain very late in the process.  Further, even if a team has an agreement with a player to sign for X amount of dollars, the league will refuse to approve the contract until the very last minute in an effort to discourage the practice of going over slot.  For example, last year it was leaked that Dickie Thon Jr. had an agreed upon bonus of $1.5 million.  However, that contract wasn't approved until the August 15 deadline because it was over slot.  The Jays very well may have agreements in place with many of the players selected, but considering many of them were looking for over-slot money, the deals won't be approved until August 15.

In the long run, players are missing out on a half year of professional game action at most.  Many teams will tell you that for the high school player, or college player for that matter, using that first year to rest and to work with instructors without playing professional games is invaluable to the process.

20R Joel Seddon

"I have every intention of coming to school," Seddon said. "If the Blue Jays offer life-changing money, I might have to bypass college, but right now, I have every intention of coming to school."

8R Mark Biggs

The Raiders' pitcher and third baseman will honor his letter of intent with the Cardinals, he confirmed to WBKO on Friday morning.

Thanks for the update on Biggs. I guess we can scratch one off the list.
dawgatc - Tuesday, July 05 2011 @ 06:37 PM EDT (#238056) #
true enough but it seems that almost every player the jays drafted must fall under this category - strange that they thought they needed 3 short season teams this year- and a question - can the teams not ask the players if they will sign prior to picking them or is that illegal??
TheBunk - Tuesday, July 05 2011 @ 06:58 PM EDT (#238057) #
That Joel Seddon quote doesn't really say much. For the right price is the assumption when trying to sign a high schooler with a tough commit.
dawgatc - Wednesday, July 06 2011 @ 07:55 AM EDT (#238075) #
If Seddon really got offered a million bucks and turned it down ;then its my opinion that he is crazy - if he thinks 1m is not life changing ;then he is gonna love the real world - good luck
bpoz - Wednesday, July 06 2011 @ 10:34 AM EDT (#238081) #
Sam, Very well explained. I was thinking exactly the same way, all completed signings will not be revealed until near Aug 15. D Thon was my perfect example as well.

It would be nice if the Jays gave some details about progress by some of these players in Winter instruction, maybe in late Nov & then in early March.
ZekeBella - Wednesday, July 06 2011 @ 04:12 PM EDT (#238099) #
Thanks for the explanation. I was expecting something like that considering this is AA not JP. I still have the utmost faith in him and my view since the spring has been 2012 not 2011. Thus the step back of Snider, Cecil and Drabek has been a concern but as we reach the halfway mark in 2011 things are looking on track. The dumping of Rivera is a good sign and hopefully E5 will be on his way after he has cooled off, relatively speaking. I do think there is a bullpen problem for 2012 as I think this present crew is very overrated, especially by Buck the Shill. Keep it going AA!
