The two highest ranking affiliates were in All-Star Game mode, while the lower levels produced some mixed results and a scandalous amount of unearned runs.

International League 3 at Pacific Coast League 0

Brad Mills started for the PCL and was the LVP of this one, allowing all 3 runs on a 2-out home run. They followed an error, making them unearned. In his 2 innings he also walked 2 and gave up 2 other hits, while recording one strikeout.  David Cooper went 1 for 1 with a walk.

Western All-Stars 8 at Eastern All-Stars 3

Another All-Star Game, this one in the Eastern League, and another Jays prospect taking the loss. Zach Stewart started for the Eastern Eastern Leagues All-Stars and surrendered a hit and a 2-out 2 run home run. They were the only runs he would allow in his 2 innings, and he also struck out 2. Joel Carreno did even worse, allowing the go ahead run plus another for good measure in his 2/3 of an inning; he gave up 3 hits total and struck out 1. 3 Fisher Cats started this one; Moises Sierra did the best playing the whole game and going 2/4. Mike McDade went 1/4 and Travis d'Arnaud went 0/2, while Adeiny Hechavarria came on as a replacement and got three at bats, striking out twice and not reaching base.

Bradenton 7 at Dunedin 6

Things started off well for Dunedin but they just couldn't hold on. Ryan Schimpf hit a three-run home run in the first as part of a four run inning that put Dunedin up by 3. Bradenton chipped away though with two in the 4th and four in the 7th, and Dunedin's comeback in the 8th fell a run short. Brad McElroy and Sean Ochinko singled twice and walked and Brian van Kirk singled and homered. Dunedin outhit Bradenton 9-4 but drew two fewer walks and committed 3 more errors. leading to 4 of the 7 Bradenton runs being unearned. Drew Hutchison gave up the only earned ones, allowing 3 in five innings on 3 hits and 3 walks with 3 Ks. Steve Turnbill took the brunt of the damage, allowing 3 unearned runs that sealed the game.

Lansing 4 at Kane County 0

Marcus Walden (spoiler alert) earned tonight's first start with a sterling performance, going 7 strong and allowing only 3 hits. He got 11 of 14 outs in play on the ground, and walked none and struck out 5, while Shawn Griffith picked him up with another 2 scoreless innings. Lansing also outhit their opponent 9-4 but no errors and no walks allowed and that usually means you win. Only 4 Lugnuts picked up those hits, with Carlos Perez and Jake Marisnick (both 3/4, 2B) and Matt Nuzzo (2/4) doing the heavy lifting.

Boise 2 at Vancouver 4

This one was tied through seven and a half before Vancouver struck and added an insurance run in the 8th. Jonathan Jones, Nicholas Baligod and Jonathon Berti (yes, they spell Jonathan/thon 2 different ways) each had 2 hits with the former two doubling. Balbino Fuenmayor also singled and walked. The pitching effort was led by Zach Breault, who went 4 innings and allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on a hit and 3 walks, whiffing 2. Travis Garret and Bryan Longpre pitched 2 scoreless innings of relief apiece, while Shane Davis pitched 1.

Bluefield 6 at Bristol 9

The B-Jays lost to ESPN (no not really, different Bristol) thanks to a 6-run 8th that put the game out of reach. Deivy Estrada started for Bluefield and was strong, pitching 5 scoreless innings while allowing 5 hits and striking out 3. Andrew Sikula gave up 3 in his one inning, Drew Elliot gave up 2 in his 1.1 (both unearned) and Milciades Santana gave up 4 while getting only 1 batter. Ugly. Andy Fermin and Leo Hernandez both had 2 singles, while Art Charles walked twice and Chris Hawkins hit a 3-run bomb.

GCL Pirates 8 at GCL Jays 3

Joe Musgrave made his Jays debut, going 1.2 innings and allowing 2 hits and a walk, resulting in 1 run scoring. Randal Thompson pitched 4.1 innings of 1-hit, scoreless ball and no batter had more than a single hit.

DSL Tigers 4 at DSL Jays 2

Since the Lugnuts are out of town, I'm going to be 51's fan for the weekend.  Vegas is playing a four game series starting tonight against Tucson in Fort Wayne's Midwest Leage park.  I'm interested to see if Cooper is in the line up tonight after playing in the all star game in Salt Lake last night and probably not arriving here in the midwest until very early this morning.

Speaking of road trips, the Fisher Cats play a doubleheader in Binghamton this evening and are there through the weekend.  It's a nice drive down Hwy 81 after crossing the Ivy Lea from Eastern Ontario, and the weather is supposed to be nice through Sunday.  Henderson Alvarez is scheduled to pitch tomorrow night.

I find it surprising that Zach Stewart would be considered one of the best starters in the Eastern League. On his own team he has a higher ERA than all the other regular starters and it's not even close, he's at 4.52 to second-worst Chad Beck at 3.36.
uglyone - Thursday, July 14 2011 @ 12:43 PM EDT (#238620) #
interesting, though, is that he has the best FIP on his starting staff.

FIP

Stewart: 3.48
Beck: 3.49
Lamura: 3.58
Alvarez: 3.67
Carreno: 3.96
Ray: 4.65

Scout.com released its mid-year Top 20 prospects today...Brett Lawrie was 6th. They spoke glowingly of his bat during the associated chat...

One does wonder how they pick the all-stars in the minors. Stewart is 29th in innings, 40th in wins, 80th in ERA, 34th in K's. I mean, I just can't find any reason for him to be on the AS team outside of 'he played in the majors this year'.

I also wonder how Adeiny Hechavarria got there with a 222/261/346 slash line. All I can figure is teams are allowed to pick a certain number of players to go to it.

Law posted his midseason Top50 today, featuring four Jays:

  • Lawrie (9)
  • D'Arnaud (20)
  • Alvarez (39)
  • Hutchison (48)

It's probable that none will lose their prospect status this year either.

ESPN.com’s Keith Law hears that top Blue Jays pick Tyler Beede didn’t report to the summer classes he had signed up for at Vanderbilt (Twitter link). It could be an indication that he's going to sign instead of going to college

Not reporting to summer classes?  Shocking behaviour.  Perhaps it can be forgiven though if he adds a couple of mph to the fastball instead.

From ESPN:

A pair of Toronto Blue Jays pitchers in the Dominican Summer League have been suspended for 50 games each following positive tests under the minor league drug program.

Right-hander Aderly De La Cruz tested positive for metabolites of Nandrolone, and left-hander Luillyn Guillen for metabolites of Stanozolol, the commissioner's office said Thursday

Lawrie played 6 innings tonight for Dunedin and went 1 for 3 with an RBI and a K.

Another shutout inning for Casey Janssen in NH. Should be nearing the end of his rehab, no?
TamRa - Friday, July 15 2011 @ 03:13 AM EDT (#238680) #
someone tweeted that Jansen was supposed to pitch in back to back games Sat/Sun and then likely be activated early next week (assuming no issues)

At this point it's a reasonable guess that if Bautista hits the DL that will be the open spot on the roster for Janssen and then the race will be whether Bautista comes back before Lawrie is ready.
Or vice-versa.

Also - people on Twitter keep saying "DFA Jo-Jo"

This will NOT happen. particularly not before August 1.

Jo-Jo's ERA vs everyone but Boston and NY is 3.89 - Alex can move that, and he will. To Cleveland, for just one example - he's better than Mitch Talbot easily. Of course there are other available pitchers but there are other teams looking too.

Reyes won't be tossed aside, and Alex won't trap himself into a move by DFA. if Jo-Jo is still here on August 1 obviously he will go through waivers, and probably get claimed, and at that point I expect AA will probably take the best deal he can get, because he's going to need room for Listch/Drabek to come back. On the other hand, if both those guys suck large through their next three starts then maybe he stays a while longer.

I see two possibilities:

1. Roster is voted by managers (and coaches?) and this indicates that professionals see talent that might not be reflected in the stats;

2. Roster is voted by the players and THEY think the guys on the roster are the most talented among their peers.

I really have no idea how those teams are selected but these seem like possibilities - maybe if Marc or Gerry or someone know how the rosters are selected?
Lugnut Fan - Friday, July 15 2011 @ 06:09 AM EDT (#238688) #
The rosters in the MWL all star game (I can't speak for the other leagues), is voted on by the managers.  Some of the team is selected by performance and some of the players going are purely political choices, especially at the lower levels.  I have seen quite a few cases here where players were not having all star worthy seasons, but have been selected due to prospect status.
Gerry - Friday, July 15 2011 @ 08:59 AM EDT (#238691) #

I don't have time but if you check the stats for Eastern League shortstops I don't think you will find too many 300 hitters.

If you checked around the majors recently it looks like we are headed back to a weak offense, great glove era.  The late 90's, early aughts, may have been a blip in terms of shortstop offense.

What is scary is that the Rays have 3 in the top 10.  Luckily at least there are no Orioles are not prominently on the list.

John Northey - Friday, July 15 2011 @ 10:02 AM EDT (#238695) #
What is funny is that in a low offense era it is a good idea to have some extra offense if you can get it, thus a good offensive shortstop should, in theory, be worth more I'd think.

I remember the Mets of the 80's using a poor third baseman at shortstop often (Howard Johnson) in an effort to help win more games. In the 80's we also saw Tony Fernandez (good hitter), Cal Ripken (great hitter and great fielder even if scouts didn't think so), Alan Trammell (solid in both), Robin Yount, mixed with Ozzie Smith (great fielder, mostly a poor hitter until the age of 29 when he finally got to the 90's for OPS+ and mostly stayed there until he was 37 - 99 OPS+ for that stretch vs 72 before [nearly 4k PA] and 80 after). Then the extremes in guys like Hubie Brooks who could drive in 100 but were horrid in the field.

There always are a few hitting shortstops and a few pure fielding ones. I'm glad we have one who is solid at both in Escobar [positive WAR for defense and offense every season].
sam - Friday, July 15 2011 @ 10:29 AM EDT (#238698) #

I wouldn't be too worried about that.  Desmond Jennings has really struggled to break through to the Majors and will be 25 this year.  There might be issues there.  Remember everyone had Reid Brignac has an elite short stop and he hasn't exactly been stellar.  Hak Ju Lee also has some issues so I don't know.

Matt Moore on the other hand is scary good.  People might jump all over me for saying this, but he looks like a David Price clone and looks quite similar to a certain Mr. Koufax.  High 90's fastball and 12-6 curveball.  I don't know if either are true 80 pitches the way both of Koufax's were but I think they're both 70's.

uglyone - Friday, July 15 2011 @ 02:01 PM EDT (#238724) #
Jennings seems to be still living off the hype from that one big year he had at age 22 split between AA and AAA. Other than that, nothing he's done profiles as "elite prospect", IMO. His bat still profiles well for a CF, but not really for a corner OF (his minor league numbers pale beside our own 24 year old Thames', for example).

Gose is four years younger than him, and hitting almost as well as he is only one level down, and projects even better in terms of defense and speed (which are Jennings' calling cards). D'Arnaud is 2 years younger than him, plays as important a defensive position, and is hitting better than Jennings ever has, and is also only one level down.

Top SS BA in EL:

1. .296
2. .275
3. .274
4. .268
5. .259
6. .255
7. .254
8. .247
9. .217 < Adeiny

The best OPS is .816, only three SS are higher than .750

Sneeps - Friday, July 15 2011 @ 05:00 PM EDT (#238754) #
not to mention the fact that Adeiny is only 22, which is young for the league, and he was rushed there.
R Billie - Saturday, July 16 2011 @ 09:26 AM EDT (#238780) #
He was definitely rushed there despite not proving himself against lesser competition.  But 22 isn't incredibly young for AA.  For a significant prospect, that's probably about the right age.  Everyone is different and this is Hech's first full year in pro ball.  I hope there's some kind of plan to rebuild his approach at the plate because right now it seems he doesn't have one.  He'll have the occasional decent game, probably where he sees mistakes.  But his overall performance is so weak that it has to be a pretty big concern considering the deal he signed.
