John Heyman has apparently tweeted that Tony LaCava is "very likely" to be Baltimore's new GM. This has followed on from the earlier rumour that the Angel's are about to hire Jerry Dipoto. Nothing is certain, of course, until it's officially announced and in this case we definitely have to consider the source.

If an offer comes I imagine it would be a tough call for Tony.  On one hand there are only 30 jobs and they don't come around too often.   On the other hand the Orioles owner, Peter Angelos, is a notable meddler and second guesser.  Angelos also has a son who is active in the business.

So if you are Tony do you take a flawed job or let it go to someone else?

I think his profile is high enough he would get other opportunites. It does nothing for your reputation to go into a doomed situation and look like a failure.

Still, it's Heyman whom I don't particularly trust so we'll have to see.

If he's beyond an initial interview it seems like he already made that decision.

According to http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/10/orioles-likely-to-hire-tony-lacava-.html Tony is a finalist.   He has all the experience Baltimore could need.   He might ask for Freedom-From-Owner rights which might cost him the Job.

If he has the opportunity, he should probably take it. It may not be his dream GM job, but who knows when he'll get another chance? Plus, if he does well, he'll be in a better position to vie for another team's GM job down the road.

Of course, as a Jays fan, I would hate to see him go. AA could probably use his services for another year or two.

Of course he'd take it.  Even Gillick went there.  LaCava has moved to another organization at least 4 times before.

I suspect the guy is being overrated here though.  As I understand it, young AA blew right past him in the Jays organization.

I am disappointed, you are underrating Alex Anthopoulos's abilities when you say Tony LaCava is overrated.   Take the Top 4 GMs in Baseball not named Alex Anthopoulos, give them (at Tony's age) his job.    A.A. would blow by all of them, much easier.   A.A. is that good.   It's possible T.L. is as good as, or better, that those 4 GMs.   It's not that Tony LaCava isn't as good as A.A., it's that A.A.is just so much better than anyone else.

AA has some good people. For example those coach of the year winners in the minor leagues. I don't know why but I have a high opinion of Sal Fassano.

I wish LaCava good luck but I think AA & the Jays will be fine.

Final Elias Rankings are out:

A Ranked Kelly Johnson B Ranked Frank Francisco Jon Rauch Jose Molina Shawn Camp Jason Frasor ended up as a Type B. Johnson had been projected as a Type B... so his being a type A may make it more likely he'll accept arbitration if offered as a team would have to give up a pick to sign him.

LaCava is apparently back in Baltimore today to meet with Angelos - which suggests he is close to receiving an offer. Presuming of course the meeting goes well.

You mean if he remembers to bring the calzone?

Sounds like the meeting did go well - from masnsports:

"As you know, Blue Jays assistant general manager Tony LaCava met with owner Peter Angelos yesterday. You can read plenty into LaCava's return trip to Baltimore, though it's important to note that Angelos wasn't present for LaCava's first interview. He met with Dodgers executive De Jon Watson, so it's not like he's never in the room. From what I'm hearing, LaCava came away very encouraged by his second interview and is prepared to take the job if it's offered. "
