The Lugnuts defeated Archie Bradley and the South Bend Hawks 1-0 today.  With that win the Lugnuts magic number to make the playoffs is 1.  The Midwest League has two teams from each division make the playoffs.  The Lugnuts are 11.5 games ahead of the third place team with 12 games left.  They are 9 games ahead of the second place team so their magic number to win the division is 4.

Jenkins with another horrendous start today - thank you JP

Just pretend that Hutchison was taken in the 1st round, and Jenkins in the 15th, and it's all better.

Why do I have to pretend? Jenkins will be a top of the rotation starter

Jenkins will be a top of the rotation starter

Him and Deck McGuire.  1-2.

Sad that people still have an axe to grind with Ricciardi. The Jenkins draft included the picks of Yan Gomes and Drew Hutchison, as well as top 50 prospects in James Paxton (with whom Beeston fumbled the negotiations and let him walk over 300k) and Jake Marisnick. Furthermore, if you actually look at the players selected after Jenkins not one player other than Mike Trout stands out, and NOBODY thought Trout was anywhere close to this sort of talent at the time.

For context: In the history of the draft, there have been three top of the rotation starters chosen: Mike Mussina, Bob Welch, and CC Sabathia. Then there's Rick Rhoden and Eric Milton, who had some good years and won a few games... and then the next best starting pitchers are Jeremy Sowers and Tim Conroy, who are tied at 18 career wins with similarly unimpressive ERAs.

If Jenkins never even makes it to the major leagues, he will be in good company.
Ryan Day - Monday, June 04 2012 @ 03:58 PM EDT (#257724) #
That should be "three top of the rotation starters chosen 20th overall."

So, you're saying that because gomes/hutchinson/marisnick were drafted in 2009,you can't criticize the selection of the #1 pick Jenkins? that's just crap - I criticized the selection of Deck Mcguire in 2010 despite saying I think that's the best draft in jays history (of course, I feel that 2011 was even better) - Of course, how stupid of me to criticize anything that JP did, everyone knows what a genius he is, the only reason he doesn't have multiple WS rings is because God is jealous of him.
MatO - Monday, June 04 2012 @ 04:40 PM EDT (#257733) #
My point is that I'm not delusional in thinking that I know what is or isn't a good pick at the time it's made.  The noted genius, Pat Gillick, made one horrid pick after another up until 1990.
92-93 - Monday, June 04 2012 @ 05:24 PM EDT (#257737) #
No. I'm saying that Jenkins was a good pick at #20 who hasn't developed well since then, and that you are using hindsight to evaluate the pick, which is dumb. If you go back and read the draft threads from 2009 everybody was quite happy with the Jenkins pick and your criticisms are nowhere to be found.

Though I did get a chuckle out of Mylegacy, who normally likes them young and athletic, predicting Jake Marisnick will be a bust.
MatO - Monday, June 04 2012 @ 07:53 PM EDT (#257745) #
It's really easy to predict a guy picked around 20 will be a bust because you'll be right at least 80% of the time.  I predict that one of the 2 first rounders picked today will be a bust and I don't even know who they are yet.

MatO, So you are saying an 80% failure rate for picks 17-25 in most years? That is fine, thank you and no argument from me.

However to any and all interested, to me, JP succeeded with college picks and not much with HS picks. I cannot blame anyone staying with his strengths. 2007 as an example. I love M Trout, but he was a HS pick. Hutch was a 15th round pick and he wanted a lot of money to sign. IMO JP does not do that. JP preferred to spend $ on FAs IMO. I have an unproven opinion that JP had very little influence in 2009.
MatO - Monday, June 04 2012 @ 08:55 PM EDT (#257754) #
They signed Hutchison, Marasnick and Hobson with the money they saved when they didn't sign Paxton et al in that draft.  The GM usually has some input on the 1st round pick and maybe a pick where large bonus amounts are in play.  JP would certainly have been involved in the bonus offer to Hutchison which was I think $400,000.  A substantial bonus but not huge.  But the story is that it was predicated on not signing those other guys.
MatO - Monday, June 04 2012 @ 10:52 PM EDT (#257779) #

Let's take a look at picks 17-25.  Since 1965 when the June draft began these are the number of players per pick that accumulated a WAR of at least 5 as per Baseball Reference.  A WAR of 5 I would say is the minimum to be considered successful pick.

  • 17 - 11
  • 18 - 7
  • 19 - 9
  • 20 - 11
  • 21 - 8
  • 22 - 12
  • 23 - 7
  • 24 - 6
  • 25 - 6

So I exaggerated.  It's actually a success rate of less than 20% if you consider about 50+ picks since 1965.

Mike McDade was out of the lineup last night.  It probably has nothing to do with the roster needs on the big club, but the thought did occur to me.
