A 2-5 Saturday for the affiliates with four games involving nine runs as the winning total.  Three of the games ended 9-3 and that's where you will find the two wins.  Turn me on, dead man!

Sacramento 7 Las Vegas 1

Travis Snider
gave Las Vegas its only run with his 10th home run of the season.

Sacramento, CA - Joel Carreno (2-5) is just 0.16 points shy of a 10.00 ERA after his latest outing.  A pair of two-out walks and a Michael Taylor three-run homer in the first was all the Athletics affiliate would need.  Carreno gave up a solo homer in the fourth and only went 3 1/3 innings.  He gave up four hits and five walks to go along with three strikeouts and four groundouts.  Tim Redding stranded two runners for Carreno but he was whacked around for three runs on three hits and four walks over 2 1/3 innings.  Two of Redding's runs came on an Eric Sogard homer.  Lefty Bill Murphy kept a pair of Redding's runners from scoring and threw a pair of zeros on the linescore.  He allowed just one hit and struck out two.  Clint Everts retired the only hitter he faced on a groundball.

The 51s only run came off the bat of Travis Snider, who popped one over the wall in right to lead off the ninth.  Snider had two of Las Vegas' five hits.  Anthony Gose, Adeiny Hechavarria and David Cooper had the others.  Eric Thames and Moises Sierra were each 0-for-3 with a base on balls but Thames struck out three times.  Yan Gomes, Mike McCoy were hitless in four at-bats and Jonathan Diaz was 0-for-3.  McCoy did manage his 16th stolen base of the year.

Portland 9 New Hampshire 1

Portland, ME - Chad Jenkins limited the Red Sox affiliate to one hit over the first two innings and kept them off the board in the third despite three singles.   Shortstop Ryan Goins bailed out Jenkins by throwing out a runner at the plate to end the inning after the runner tried to score from second on an infield single.  The wheels came off in the fourth and the fifth innings as Jenkins was whacked for six runs (five earned) on 13 hits, including a two-run home run.  He picked up four Ks, did not walk anyone and six of his nine outs in play remained in the infield.  Ronald Uviedo struck out the side in the sixth but in between punchouts, he was pounded for three runs on three hits and two walks.  Matt Daly yielded a pair of hits but struck out two over two shutout frames.

Sean Ochinko prevented a Portland shutout with an RBI groundout in the sixth to score Brad Glenn in the sixth.  Glenn singled and Kenen Bailli doubled him to third.  Save for walks by Goins, Jake Marisnick and Mike McDade - that was it for the New Hampshire offence.  Kevin Howard and Brian Van Kirk were 0-for-4 and Mark Sobolewski was 0-for-3.

Dunedin 9 Jupiter 3

Jupiter, FL - The Marlins affiliate got to Marcus Walden (3-1) early but not often.  Walden gave up two runs in the first (one unearned after an Oliver Dominguez error at third) but put up five zeros on the linescore afterwards.  He scattered six hits and a walk and struck out a pair but more impressively, he racked up 14 groundball outs.  Dayton Marze worked the seventh but surrendered a run on two hits and a walk.  Shawn Griffith pitched a one-hit eighth that included a strikeout and Danny Barnes had a one-hit ninth but had two punchouts.

Marcus Knecht
's two-run single tied the game for Dunedin in the fourth and Jack Murphy untied it with a two-run double.  Murphy singled home a Knecht triple to open the sixth, Jon Berti knocked home a run with a single and two more runs scored on a throwing error by the Hammerheads catcher and a wild pitch.  Koby Clemens capped off the scoring with a home run in the ninth.  Dominguez had three of Dunedin's 11 hits while Murphy, Knecht and Clemens had two apiece.  Jonathan Jones added a double and Berti stole a base to go along with his single. Justin Jackson drew two walks while Ryan Schimpf and Kevin Ahrens had one each.

Lansing 9 Cedar Rapids 3

Lansing, MI - The Lugnuts only needed to get 26 outs for the win after three rain delays dampened the evening at Cooley Law School Stadium.  Andy Fermin and K.C. Hobson got the Lugnuts rolling in the first with run-scoring singles and a Kenny Wilson RBI groundout plated home a run in the second. Fermin and Hobson struck again in the fourth as Fermin singled home another run and Hobson blasted a three-run homer to right for his 8th of the season.  Fermin tripled home a run in the fifth and Gustavo Pierre wrapped up the scoring with an RBI single.  Fermin had a 3-for-5 night at the plate, Pierre was 3-for-4 and Hobson had a walk to go with his homer and single.  Kevin Patterson outdid them all in the on-base department with two singles and two walks.  Chris Hawkins also had a multi-hit game with a pair of singles.  Shane Opitz singled and walked while Kenny Wilson walked twice and stole twice, upping his stolen base total to 33.  Carlos Perez and Chris Peters were both 0-for-5 but Perez did score a run.

Noah Syndergaard pitched a perfect three innings, striking out four and getting three groundball outs.  Philip Brua (1-0) limited the Angels affiliate to a run over three innings, despite four hits and two walks.  He struck out two and produced five outs on the ground.  Aleson Escalonte pitched the final 2 2/3 innings but the Kernels popped him for three runs (two earned - due to a Pierre error at third) on five hits, including a homer.  He struck out one and continued the fine tradition of getting outs on the ground by getting six of them.

Boise 9 Vancouver 3

Jorge Flores hit his first home run of the season in Boise Saturday night.

Boise, ID - The Cubs affiliate did their damage early to Canadians starter Ben White with a run in the first and four more in the second.  White did last 5 1/3 innings but was roughed up for six runs (three of them on a home run) on seven hits, two walks and two hit batsmen.  White only struck out one but got eight groundball outs.  Zack Breault permitted both of his inherited runners to score and the Hawks got to him for three more over his 2 2/3 innings on four hits and a walk.  He did pick off a runner at first.

Jorge Flores
put one over the left field wall for a solo shot in the fourth inning, his first of the year, and Jordan Leyland had a run-scoring double.  A sacrifice fly by Kellen Sweeney in the ninth rounded out the scoring.  Leyland and Tucker Frawley had two hits apiece and Flores picked up a walk to go along with his double.  However, Frawley was picked off at first and the same happened to Flores at second.  Daniel Arcila also reached twice with a double and a walk.  Carlos Ramirez had a double but was pinch-hit for by Leo Hernandez, who was 0-for-1.  Kellen Sweeney had a single to go with his sacrifice fly.  Nick Baligod and Matt Newman were 0-for-3 with a walk apiece.

Elizabethton 4 Bluefield 0

Elizabethton, TN
- This game with the Twins affiliate was scoreless after five as Bluefield starter Jeremy Gabryszwski kept the Twins in check to four hits and a walk.  He racked up four strikeouts and five of his seven outs in play were on the ground.  At one point, he retired 10 of 11 hitters but needed help from Dwight Smith Jr. and Dickie Joe Thon, who started an 8-6-2 play to cut down a runner at the plate to end the fifth inning.  Lefty Griffin Murphy (1-2) allowed an unearned run in the sixth after a Matt Dean throwing error from third.  Murphy's only mistake was allowing the double that eventually came in to score.  He struck out two, walked nobody and his groundout/flyout total was 5-0.  Justin James faced four batters and got nobody out and that resulted in three runs, two of them earned.  The Twins used a walk, single, a bunt single, a throwing error from catcher Santiago Nessy and a triple to plate two runs off of James.  Julio Carmona allowed an inherited runner to score but struck out two for a shutout inning.

Nessy and Dean had the only Bluefield hits, both of them doubles.  Jorge Vega-Rosado, Art Charles and Eric Arce had a walk apiece.  Smith was 0-for-4 while Thon, Christian Lopes and Nico Taylor were 0-for-3.  Alex Azor pinch-ran for Arce and was caught stealing.

GCL Yankees 5 GCL Blue Jays 0

Tampa, FL - The Yankees got to Mark Biggs (0-3) for a run in the first as the result of a triple and a wild pitch and then added two more on a home run in the second.  Biggs did settle down with a 1-2-3 third before exiting.  He gave up four hits but struck out one, walked nobody and induced three groundouts.  Adonys Cardona gave up the other two runs in his lone inning of work.  He walked the first two batters, gave up three singles and chucked one to the backstop.  Cardona struck out a batter and induced a ground ball double play.  Tim Brechbuehler scattered a hit and a walk and struck out one over two shutout innings.  Brady Dragmire worked a one-hit frame and punched out two but Chuck Ghysels was even better as he struck out the side swinging in the ninth.

Dennis Jones
provided half of Dunedin's four hits and took one for the team.  Justin Atkinson and Jesus Gonzalez had the other singles.  George Carroll, Alexys Rodriguez and Dawel Lugo reached base via the walk.  John Silviano, Gabriel Cenas and Derrick Loveless were 0-for-12 collectively, with Loveless striking out three times.

*** 3 Stars!!! ***

3.  Noah Syndergaard, Lansing.
Syndergaard is limiting Midwest League hitters to a .219 batting average and has a groundout/flyout ratio of 2-1.

2.  Marcus Walden, Dunedin.
Walden's GO/FO ratio is 3.8-1 with Dunedin and the Florida State League is hitting just .227 against him.

1.  K.C. Hobson, Lansing.
Hobson's home run gives him 32 extra-base hits for the Lugnuts.

For Pillar fans, he's up to Dunedin and Crouse went back to Lansing.

also someone was asking about Matt Wright, he was placed on the DL so that might have something to do with his place in line...

On June 25th Anthony Gose stole his 28th and 29th bases. Since then, 0 SB's, 5 CS's.

Whatever we think of Adeiny Hechavarria's hitting... I've always linked with the more hyped (most likely due to his team) and fellow Cuban Jose Igelsias. He's clocking in this year at 259/302/299 (which is actually an improvement over last year's AAA numbers of 235/285/269) which is horrendous.

Yet you still read things like this "Meanwhile, slick Pawtucket shortstop Jose Iglesias was marking time until, as everybody expects, he's called up to play at Fenway in very short order." - on this Grantland article about Daniel Bard (http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/8169902/daniel-bard-returns-pawtucket).

There is really no way the Red Sox will turn over their full time shortstop job to a guy who's very likely going to have an OBP and Slug of below 300 in the majors... would they?

If Hechavarria's hitting isn't enough for the majors I wonder if his arm alone is - he is said to have a cannon and given the Jays pitching shortage would it be worthwhile to see if he has enough?  Not right now, as he could be an everyday player in 2013, but he is a candidate should his bat be as bad as Igelsias' appears to be.

Funny you say that. Hechavarria warmed up his arm before the game I attended using a pitcher's mechanics.
