Two wins in seven tries and virtually nothing worth mentioning. So read on!

Reno 6    Las Vegas 5 (11 innings)

The 51s dropped an extra innings affair on Saturday. Mark Sobolewski celebrated his promotion to AAA with a 2-for-5, two double effort in a losing cause. Eric Thames and David Cooper each had a pair of hits, including a double for Thames. Adeiny Hechavarria took an o-for-5 but walked.

Nate Robertson started and didn't last long at all going one inning plus and allowing three runs on four hits. Newly acquired David Carpenter went 1.2 frames allowing a single, walk, and struck out three. He also got tagged with a blown save.

Portland 9    New Hampshire 1

Oof. Nothing worth talking about here. Six hits for the Fisher Cats. Two from Kevin Howard.

Possible dumb question... Are minor league roster sizes supposed to be 25 as well? Just doing some minor league research and notice that the 51's & NH each have 25 players, but the A ball teams only have 24 each. And conversely, the Van Canadians have 30.

To follow that up, Bluefield also has 30. I'm assuming it's 25 for the A-AAA teams and 30 for the short season teams, but hoping somebody can shed some light for me. Thanks!

Nicolino against faded late in his start today. Allowed 1 hit through 5... and gave up all the runs after that.

Regarding Nicolino, I think that it is a lot more important that he was almost perfect through 5 innings. These guys are young and working on things. Giving up 2 runs in the sixth is not a crisis situation. Learning how to go through a line up 3-4 times is part of the learning curve. Indurance is both physical and mental, and takes time to build up. Any or all of these guys might eventually end up in the bullpen. His outing today was a positive. Please dont panic.

Minor league roster limits are handled differently than in the majors. There are usually two limits - those under "control" (contract) and those "active". At AAA, there can only be 24 active for each game, but up to 38 can be under control. At AA, it's 24 and 37. In A, its 25 and 35. In SS-A it's 30 and 35, but only 25 can be in uniform for any game. In rookie ball, it's 30 and 35. As I understand it, the main implication is that pitchers (particularly starters) are often "inactive" for a day or two after they pitch, then reactivated on a rolling basis. This allows them to keep 15 or more pitchers on a roster relatively active. More details here.

Gerry,

any info on when or if Nolin is coming back from injury? Seems to be a hole in the Dunedin rotation. Morrow will fill a spot 2 or 3 times but then...

Thanks DS!

The roster size for AAA and AA was increased to 25 this year, I think it might have been part of the new CBA.  I don't think there was any change to the A ball limits.

As far as I know Sean Nolin is close to coming back.  I believe I heard he is with the team and working out.  Generally, when a player stays with his team the injury is minor, when he heads to Dunedin the injury is serious.
