In a long-rumored deal, the Texas Rangers have swapped framchise hits leader Michael Young to the Philadelphia Phillies --  where the fprmer Jay prospect, previously dealt as part of a package for the memorable Esteban Loiaza, is expected to start at third base for the Phils.

Philly will ship southward right-handed reliever Josh Lindblom and minor league righty Lisalverto Bonilla to the Rangers to complete the deal. Linblom will get a chance to stick in the crowded Rangers bullpen, while Bonilla looks to fill the "prospect" role in this deal.

Young agreed to ignore his 10/5 rights to block a trade as part of a side deal with the Rangers.

Has it been declared officially that "He who shall not be named" can now be named?  The scars are so fresh.  Besides, it was kinda fun to have Lord Voldemort to kick around.

He also agreed to accept a big fat check to cover his loss in income taxes (Tex vs. Phi).

It's probably all that secessionist talk making him antsy that made him want to leave.

And Zack Greinke has signed with the Dodgers.

$147 million over 6 years, or $24.5 per year if you prefer. FanGraphs dollar value has had him above that figure once in his career (2009, worth $42 million) and twice more in the $20+ range (2008, 2012). If you assume the value per win has gone up drastically (or is higher in LA than elsewhere) then he could be worth it, but that is a heck of a risk.

Safe bet that now the price for starters has been established and we'll see a few more deals go down quickly. Will the Jays be one of the teams in it? Doubtful but we'll see. Safe to say Johnson's request for a multi-year deal has gone up in dollar value.

As I said earlier (way way earlier), A.A.'s chances of re-signing Johnson would drop when Greinke signed (regardless of Johnson's year), unless he did it early (too late).   A.A. would sign a Free Agent Starter if the Time and Money were right.   To do that, someone must really want to be here, at a discount.

I think a Johnson extension is unlikely. To warrant an extension, JJ needs to prove that he's healthy. The problem is, if he manages to do this (for example, by pitching 200+ innings), he will almost certainly opt for free agency, as he will be in line for a big contract. It also wouldn't surprise me if he wants to make his own decision as to where to spend the next few years of his career.

The only way I could see an extension being worked out is if Johnson has a solid first half and accepts a "bird in the hand" offer (at somewhat of a discount) at the All-Star break, as EE did last year.

I think. Greenfrog's nailed it. Even a bird in the hand extension in July might exceed 4/$75m.

I think it certainly will in terms of years if he's had another three months where he's healthy. Most likely AAV, too.

You also have to think that prospects such as Syndergaard, Sanchez, Osuna et al. are more valuable than ever, as potential cost-controlled front- to mid-rotation starters down the road.

Don't forget Sean Nolin, who's stuff reportedly compares favorably to the departed Justin Nicolino.   Let's just say Syndergaard, Sanchez, Nolin, Osuna et al. when talking about Top Pitching Studs.
