The Toronto Blue Jays and the Vancouver Canadians have agreed to a two-year extension of their Player Development Contract. The original agreement was in effect until 2014 but the two sides agreed to continue their partnership through the 2015 and 2016 seasons.
The Vancouver Canadians have won two Northwest League championships since becoming a Blue Jays affiliate in 2011.

The Vancouver Sun has a story on the sold-out luncheon that was attended by third baseman and Langley B.C. native Brett Lawrie, pitcher Brandon Morrow, general manager Alex Anthopoulos and president/CEO Paul Beeston. The Blue Jays current PDCs with Buffalo, New Hampshire, Lansing and Bluefield conclude at the end of the 2014 season.

Not any reason I can think of not to like it unless it would be a AAA team but Buffalo probably works better for that anyway.

Way back teams used to go visit their top minor league affiliates and play a game (mainly with backup players while regulars would make one plate appearance or something).  Wonder if that would help keep teams like Buffalo in the mix?

It is good to lock down Vancouver though.  I like the Jays having minor league teams in Canada.

That logo would look beautiful 2 inches to the left.

How are the Jays supposed to become championship-calibre when their fan sites are looking so unstylish and out of touch?

(if you are seething with anger at this: relax, it's a joke, and lighten up! also: think about how something might be done some time for improvement, if possible, before the game is umpired by a computer)

How about for April 1, bring back Vernon and Roy to the banner?

Hello, everybody. I've been reading this site for years and enjoy all the knowledgable comments and the civility everyone displays toward one another ( For the most part ! )  I have never posted as I am mostly ignorant to aot of the statistics and terms used , even something such as LOOGY  (  Leave ( men) Onbase Or Get Yanked ? ) . I am ,however a diehard Jays fan and I'm really excited and looking forward to the new season. With this being the dog days of winter so to speak , I was wondering if I could suggest an idea fora new thread ? I was wondering if the contributors here, some of whom must have seen hundreds of live games , could write about their memories of the first major league game that they attended in person. I , myself, have only seen one ine my lifetime , and it was about 30 years ago in Yankee Stadium , and it happened to be the day Catfish Hunter was being honored as he was retiring that year. I only remember a few things : 1) How small the field, in particular the outfield looked compared to on tv.  2) An elephant being led down the third base line in a pregame ceremony. ( I know this was connected to Catfish's days with Oakland , but I'm not sure why an elephant is affiliated with the A's. I have seen one on their emblem. )  3) Two drunk guys nearly got in a fight near me. 4) The only actual play I remember is Reggie Jackson , who was playing in right field , throwing a ball from near the wall in the air to the third baseman. Reggie was known for his home runs but, man , he had a strong arm, too !  Anyway I didn't mean to hijact this current thread but didn't know how to otherwise post it. Thanks again for everybody on this site and all their contributions, and I hope we all enjoy the 2013 season immensely !

even something such as LOOGY

LOOGY = Lefty One-Out GuY; a lefty specialist who will face one left-handed batter and then leave the game (because he ordinarily gets killed by right handed hitters)

There was such a thread a year or two ago (with links to the boxscores in question). You might want to check the archives. A fellow named Dewey "won" that thread with some damn impressive name-dropping.

Welcome Island Boy.  Never hesitate to ask questions as people will respond (hopefully politely).  Loogy was answered by someone else (of note: ROOGY is for Right-handed One Out GuY's and TINSTAAPP is 'there is no such thing as a pitching prospect' - a common feeling among long time fans who have suffered through many blown out arms).

As to first ever games, mine was this game against the Yankees in 1978 I sat on the benches at Exhibition Stadium with my parents and sister (my baby sister must have been left at home that day).  My sister (one year younger than me) had a Yankee shirt on for it as the Yanks slaughtered the Jays 11-3.  My next live game wasn't until 1984 or 1985 against Oakland just before or after the all-star break.  Hard to recall exactly now.  Then I went to quite a few from '85 through 1989 and slowed down during university years and then rarely since.  The last was a mess against the Yankees that I took my daughter to - the box office sold us seats in the middle of a drunken zone in the upper deck, never mentioning about the non-drinking areas (which I should've thought of too, but box office types should be trained to direct parents with kids away from the bleacher bum areas).  It turned my daughter off of going to Jay games.  Now we live in Thunder Bay so it will probably be a long time until we go again, although we will probably go to a Thunder Bay Border Cats game or two this summer (cheaper and probably just as fun for the kids).

As to the elephant, the A's in the early 70's did promotions with elephants as the team was viewed as a white elephant at times.

The Elephant goes back to the early days when NY manager John McGraw referred to the A's as a white elephant.
