Buffalo extended its winning streak to eight games and Lansing got a big fly and six stolen bases. The other team named the Blue Jays came up short.

Buffalo 8 Lehigh Valley 2

Allentown, PA — The Herd charged out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the third. Jim Negrych singled home the first run. FREE JIM NEGRYCH! Anthony Gose scored another run with a groundout and that was followed by RBI singles from Luis Jimenez and Andy LaRoche. Buffalo tacked on two more runs in the sixth courtesy of run-scoring singles from Eugenio Velez and Negrych. The other two runs in the ninth came courtesy of a balk and an error. The balk resulted in the ejections of Iron Pigs manager Dave Brundage and catcher Steven Lerud. Negrych had three hits while Velez and Josh Thole had two hits apiece. Mauro Gomez had one hit, two walks and a stolen base. Ryan Goins had a base hit while Gose and Ryan Langerhans offset 0-for-4 nights with a walk apiece.

Justin Germano (3-1) gave up a dozen hits but matched that with 12 groundball outs to limit the Phillies affiliate down to just a couple of runs over seven innings. He struck out three and walked no one. Mickey Storey completed two perfect innings to wrap things up, racking up a whopping 5 K's.

Daytona 7 Dunedin 4

Dunedin, FL — Lefty Efrain Nieves (2-2) and the Dunedin defence could not refrain from allowing the Cubs affiliate to score early and often, as they scored five runs in the first two innings. Nieves was charged with one more run in the fourth but half of the six runs allowed were unearned because of two Pierce Rankin errors at third. The six runs came on five hits and two walks but Nieves struck out four and collected six groundball outs. Ajay Meyer worked around a couple of hits to pitch two shutout frames with three strikeouts. Lefty Evan Crawford was touched up for a run on two hits in his one inning of work while striking out a batter. Dustin Antolin was able to overcome a hit and a walk by striking out one over one shutout inning. Scott Gracey worked a perfect frame with one punchout.

The Dunedin offence woke up in the fourth inning when Andy Burns doubled home a Marcus Knecht double. Burns came in to count on a Gabe Jacobo sacrifice fly. Dunedin drew a little closer with Knecht belting a two-run homer that plated a Jon Berti single. Knecht, Burns and Berti were the only ones to break the goose egg in the hit column and all three were able to get on base via the walk. Burns also swiped a base. Nick Baligod was 0-for-2 with a walk. K.C. Hobson was 0-for-4 while Jacobo, Rankin, Kevin Patterson and Aaron Munoz were hitless in three official at-bats.

Lansing 8 Dayton 5

Lansing, MIJavier Avendano (2-1) endured a rocky beginning against the Reds affiliate as he was torched for two runs in the first and three more in the third. He managed to get through five frames with the damage done by five hits and two walks. One of the runs was unearned after a missed catch by his battery mate Seth Conner, who did redeem himself by picking off a runner at third to end the fifth inning and preserve a one-run lead. Avendano struck out two and managed just four groundball outs. Arik Sikula struck out half of the six batters he faced over two perfect innings and earned a hold. Tucker Donahue also got a hold for a shutout frame that saw him walk one and strikeout one. Chuck Ghysels also struck out a batter and walked one to pick up his second save.

Gustavo Pierre lifted a sac fly to score Lansing's first run in the first inning. Jorge Flores drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game in the second and Pierre lifted a big fly for a grand slam to catapult Lansing to a 6-2 lead. The Lugnuts offence was not heard from again until the eighth inning when Christian Lopes delivered a two-out, two-run single to tack on some insurance runs. Lopes was on base four times with three hits and a walk. Dalton Pompey doubled, walked twice and stole three bases while Jorge Flores singled, walked three times and stole three bases at the top two spots in the order. Emilio Guerrero singled and walked and Carlos Ramirez had a base hit. Conner and Ronnie Melendez were both 0-for-3 with a walk. Kellen Sweeney was 0-for-4 with a hat trick in the K column.

*** 3 Stars!!! ***

Negrych is interesting.  Back in 2008 he had a great year between A+ and AA hitting 359/438/482 and looking like he might be a prospect.  Every other season his OPS has been in the 700's.  As a second baseman that is adequate but odds are teams (Pittsburgh/Florida/Washington) felt he wasn't good enough to reach 700 in the majors.  I suspect if the Jays need someone at 2B (ie: Izturis goes down) he'll be up but otherwise he can help Buffalo keep this hot streak going.

Does anyone know why Jeremy Jeffress hasn't been pitching? I was happy to hear that the Jays were able to slip him through waivers. I thought he was assigned to Buffalo...but that was close to a week ago. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense. He seems to have a lot of talent and could be a real asset if he can put it all together. I'd much rather see him with the Jays than Ramon Ortiz.

How's Negrych's D?  He's been tearing it up in AAA and Bonifacio couldn't really have been any worse to start the year.

I think Christian Lopes should have been a star. Let's call it the fourth star. His walk total is very low but maybe, just maybe, the Jays have a hitting prospect.

Pompey up...no use wishing now for any other sin!

Actually, that belongs in the major league thread.

Jeffress reportedly went to Florida to work on his command.

When Reyes went down with injury, could Izturis and Bonifacio platoon shortstop while Negrych play second base ? Even if Negrych doesn't help the Jays in the long run, he could still be a nice trade asset, recalling Joe Inglett. Anyway, Kawasaki has taken the leadoff and shortstop role, so the aforesaid scenario is bit out of the shortstop void, unless DeRosa is demoted.

Now Negrych could back Lawrie up at third base if DeRosa would really be demoted. For now, coould Negrych replace Clint Robinson on the 40-man roster as a reward for his performance ?

Huh? The Jays released Inglett. He had no trade value.

Him alone could have no trade value; what if he is part of a trade package ? More importantly and let me be more clear of my last post: how can AA or management develop players (prospects or not) to exploit their values as asset even if they will not help the organization in the long run ?
Chuck - Tuesday, April 23 2013 @ 11:34 AM EDT (#270779) #
By its very definition, replacement level (and sub-replacement level) talent has virtually no trade value.

Negrych could be useful, but only if he really has reached a new level of ability not previously seen.  Right now he is showing that in AAA but who knows if it would translate to the majors, far too few PA and could just be a hot streak which all players get from time to time.

ZIPS has Bonifacio as a sub-replacement level player for the rest of the year.  Izturis is a little above.  There is certainly room to platoon one of them with Negrych, with Izturis probably being the better choice as you are more likely to bring him in as a late inning defensive sub.  Would Negrych hit well enough to make it worthwhile?  Maybe. If he has added a little pop (not inconceivable at age 28), he should be an average hitter, and better-than-average for a second baseman.

I am wholeheartedly in support of any roster move that results in Bonifacio playing in his proper position - Buffalo.

When Reyes gets back - Kawasaki to 2nd? Reyes resumes batting first with Kawasaki batting ninth?

I love Boni - but I don't think he's got the arm for SS or 2nd or 3rd. Maicer is an adequate back up. Looks like Davis would be the pitch runner of choice late in the game for Lind, Arencibia, etal.

Mike Green - Tuesday, April 23 2013 @ 12:19 PM EDT (#270789) #
Kawasaki is actually the better defender at shortstop.  If you moved him into a utility role when Reyes returns, you could DH Reyes against LHP to give his legs a break.

I was watching Moneyball...again last night.  The film showed the head of scouting and Art Howe as baffoons who wanted to fight the system. At the time, everyone gave Howe the credit for them winning, but if you go from this film, they succeeded despite Art Howe.

So I was wondering, where was JP Ricciardi in this film? The Jays hired Ricciardi to bring moneyball here.  But, was he part of it?  (or supported it?)

Here is his opinion

http://forums.prosportsdaily.com/showthread.php?561656-J-P-Ricciardi-says-Moneyball-doesn-t-tell-half-the-story

Just curious what opinions are out there?  I know he is gone, but I was just wondering if hiring him was just a flat out mistake?

Kawasaki can be useful after the return of Reyes. For now, Negrych can replace Clint Robinson on the 40-man roster rewarding for performance ? If he continues his performance, could Negrych back Lawrie up at third base and replace the then demoted DeRosa ?

On the other hand, I think there is a reason to bring a veteran like DeRosa.

As an observation, AA seems to bring or keep a veteran or two (hitter and pitcher each) every season as part of active roster.

2013: DeRosa, Darren Oliver
2012: Omar Vizquel, Oliver
2011: Jose Molina, Shawn Camp, JohnnyMac (traded during the season)
2010: Molina, JohnnyMac, Downs and/or Camp (AA cannot be accounted for this season because Ricciardi left AA some player contracts)
