The Buffalo winning streak continues and Dunedin got back in the win column. Lansing came up short while New Hampshire had an unscheduled night off.

Buffalo 5 Pawtucket 3

Buffalo, NY — The Red Sox looked to put an end to the Bisons win streak as Bryce Brentz belted a three-run homer off Edgar Gonzalez. After that, Gonzalez settled down by setting down nine of out 11 hitters. He got some help from centerfielder Anthony Gose, who threw out Jackie Bradley Jr. after he had singled. Gonzalez lasted 5 1/3 innings and dealt with nine baserunners in the form of seven hits, a walk and a hit by pitch. He struck out four and picked up five outs on the ground. Lefty Buddy Carlyle (1-0) bailed out Gonzalez by stranding a pair of runners in the sixth but had to escape walking the bases loaded in the seventh. He did strike out a pair. Lefty Juan Perez pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings, striking out a pair, but giving up a hit and two walks. Neil Wagner stranded a Perez runner and survived a walk of his own by striking out two to pick up his fifth save.

The Herd got their bats going in the fourth when Luis Jimenez doubled home a Mauro Gomez triple. Jimenez came in to score on an Andy LaRoche base hit. Jimenez gave the Bisons the lead in the seventh with a two-run double. Josh Thole added an insurance run with a solo homer to begin the eighth. Jimenez, Gomez and Jim Negrych had two hits apiece. Gomez doubled twice while Negrych had a double and a walk to push his average to .500. Mike McCoy singled, walked and stole a base while LaRoche took one for the team to go along with his single. Eugenio Velez was 0-for-2 but walked twice. Anthony Gose walked once in four trips to the plate. Lance Zadawski was 0-for-4.

New Britain @ New Hampshire — Postponed due to rain. The game will be made up Wednesday in a 5:05 p.m. doubleheader.

Dunedin 3 Daytona Zippo!

Dunedin, FLCasey Lawrence (2-0) pitched a four-hitter over eight shutout frames. He punched out nine batters, walked nobody and got eight outs on the ground. Lawrence cut through the Cubs lineup in one-two-three fashion over the first three frames before a leadoff single in the fourth. He still wound up facing the minimum over his first five frames. Blake McFarland walked one but struck out one in a scoreless ninth for save number five.

The first run of the game did not come until there were two outs in the fifth. Jon Berti delivered an RBI single but the rally ended when Aaron Munoz was cut down at third base on an 8-3-5 putout. Munoz atoned for that by doubling in a run in the seventh inning and Berti delivered again with a run-scoring base knock. Berti, Munoz and Marcus Knecht led the Dunedin attack with two hits apiece with Berti swiping a base. Andy Burns was the on-base leader with a single and two bases on balls. Derrick Chung singled and walked and Kevin Patterson was 1-for-4. Matt Newman was 0-for-3 with a walk. K.C. Hobson and Gabe Jacobo wore 0-for-4 collars.

Dayton 4 Lansing 3

Lansing, MI — The Reds affiliate managed a pair of runs against lefty Alonzo Gonzalez over his five innings of work. Gonzalez scattered three hits and three walks but struck out six and three of his four outs did not escape the infield. Gonzalez was in line for the win but that went out the window when Matt Johnson served up a solo homer over 1 2/3 innings. He allowed two hits and plunked a batter but struck out one. Ian Kadish (0-1) stranded both Johnson runners but allowed the winning run on a hit and a walk. Lefty Griffin Murphy worked a clean ninth that included one strikeout.

The Lugnuts fought back from a 2-0 hole when Chris Hawkins singled home a run in the fourth. They grabbed the lead in the fifth when a Gustavo Pierre fielder's choice and an error led to two runs crossing the plate. Hawkins had a three-hit game and Jorge Flores doubled and singled. Pierre, Santiago Nessy and Carlos Ramirez were 1-for-4 with Ramirez collecting a double. Dalton Pompey drew a walk in five trips to the dish while Balbino Fuenmayor walked once in four plate appearances. Christian Lopes and Kellen Sweeney were 0-for-4.

much of this and Lawrence will pretty much force them to give him a legit shot (as opposed to just a fill in) at AA. Also, by the way, Carreno and Beck are making the case that they have mastered AA and need to be in Buffalo. Fans of Johnny Tolisano should be pleased, but one wonders if, barring injury, the Jays will find a place for him in Buffalo at all given then "win to impress the new affiliate" plan.

OTOH, Lansing's hitting is struggling badly outside Christian Lopes and even he needs to work on the BB/K ratio.

A nice Negrych throw from the seat of his pants up the middle to get a batter.

Josh Thole had a big game for the Bisons, 3-4 with a double and a homer.  He is now hitting .400/.478/.550 with 4 XBH, 5 walks and 2 strikeouts in 42 PAs, while absoluting demolishing RHPs.  It seems that he is not suffering any effects of last year's concussion.  It would probably be a good idea to call him up in place of Blanco and to semi-platoon him with Arencibia (Dickey plus one or two other starts against RHPs; if the opponents send a lefty against Dickey, Arencibia DHs).

The club isn't terribly likely to do this right now because Arencibia is tied for the league lead in home runs.

You are dead on again Mike.  They have four bench players who hit lefties and struggle against righties.  They need to balance this out with at least one left-hander on the bench.

Mike, may I guess that you are suggesting Thole and Negrych being promoted, Blanco and DeRosa DFA ?

Personally, I think that I'd keep DeRosa and send Bonifacio down but you can make a case either way (Bonifacio is a useful pinch-runner at least when Davis is in the starting lineup; DeRosa is a capable defensive third baseman and seems to sufficiently recovered to be a decent RH pinch-hitter).  In the old days, you'd have a shorter pen and room for both of them.

I am pretty sure that Thole would be an upgrade on Blanco.  I am not as sure that Negrych would be an upgrade on Izturis even against RHP.  Izturis has been smitten with some pretty bad luck early in the year and has a pretty good long-term history.  Nonetheless, I think there is room for Izturis to get substantial work, platooning with Negrych and backing up Kawasaki, consistent with his workload in prior years.

Dwight Smith Jr. has reportedly been promoted from Vancouver to Lansing.
