The affiliates took two out of three Tuesday night. The highlights featured a great starting performance in Dunedin and a steal of home in Buffalo. The downside was the early exit of the system's top catching prospect.

Buffalo 6 Norfolk 4

Buffalo, NY Anthony Gose and his game-changing speed created the Herd's first run against the Orioles affiliate. He reached base on catcher interference, went to third on a Jim Negrych single and then stole home. Luis Jimenez went yard again for the second straight night, belting a two-run shot in the fourth. Negrych singled home a run in the fifth and doubled home two more in the seventh to snap a 4-4 tie. If he can poop fruit salad out of his butt, he just might get a call up! Negrych had three hits and Jimenez had two. Gose had a hit and a walk. Moises Sierra doubled while Andy LaRoche and Mike Nickeas added base hits. Mike McCoy walked and stole a base. Mauro Gomez came up empty in four at-bats and Eugenio Velez was hitless in three trips to the dish.

Justin Germano struggled to last 5 2/3 innings and surrendered four runs on eight hits — including another two-run poke over the wall by Travis Ishikawa — and five walks. Lefty Juan Perez (2-1) pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, walking one but striking out three. Jeremy Jeffress had a scoreless inning in his Buffalo debut, walking one and striking out one to collect the hold. Neil Wagner nailed it down in the ninth; striking out two and walking one, to get his eighth save.

New Britain 8 New Hampshire 5

Manchester, NH Sean Nolin received a rude introduction from the Twins affiliate in his 2013 debut. The lefthander was nicked for a run in the first inning and two more in the second. Nolin got some help from Kevin Pillar — who teamed up with John Tolisano to start an 8-4 double play in the first. Nolin pitched 3 1/3 innings and gave up six hits, a walk and a hit by pitch with three strikeouts. One of Nolin's three runs was unearned as shortstop Kevin Nolan threw one away. He threw 76 pitches, 49 for strikes. Chorye Spoone (1-2) struck out four in 1 2/3 innings and stranded a runner for Nolin. However, the Rock Cats scored four times in the fifth on three hits — including a homer by former Jays farmhand Mark Sobolewski — and two walks. Matt Wright soaked up the final four innings, yielding just a single run on four hits. The lefty also picked up one strikeout.

The Fisher Cats battled back from a 3-0 deficit when Pillar delivered a two-out, two run single in the second inning. An RBI double by Brad Glenn and an RBI single by Adam Loewen in the third gave New Hampshire its only lead. A Ricardo Nanita groundout plated the final run in the sixth. Glenn had two doubles and a walk. Pillar doubled as part of a two-hit night while Nolan and Clint Robinson also joined the two-hit club. Sean Ochinko reached twice with two bases on balls. Nanita had a single. Ryan Schimpf was 0-for-5 and Tolisano went 0-for-4.

Dunedin 3 Bradenton 1

Dunedin, FLAndy Burns fired up the Dunedin offence with a two-run homer in the first inning. Peter Mooney drove in the other run with a single in the second, cashing in Marcus Knecht after he singled and stole second. Burns and Matt Newman had the multi-hit games for Dunedin but Pierce Rankin was the on-base leader with a double and two walks. He entered the game as a pinch-hitter for catcher A.J. Jimenez in the first inning. Mooney reached twice by drawing a walk. Derrick Chung also had a base hit. Jon Berti walked and stole a base. K.C. Hobson also had a base on balls. Jonathan Jones was hitless in four at-bats.

Aaron Sanchez (2-1) had an outstanding start, pitching 5 1/3 shutout frames and allowing just two hits and a walk against the Pirates affiliate. He struck out six while seven of his nine outs in play were on the grass. Scott Gracey gave up a solo homer among his three hits and a walk over 1 2/3 innings while ringing up one whiff for the hold. Dustin Antolin collected a two-inning save, matching two walks with two strikeouts.

*** 3 Stars!!! ***

3. Andy Burns, Dunedin— Has 11 stolen bases and 14 extra-base hits on the season.

2. Jim Negrych, Buffalo— A six-game hitting streak and 15 extra-base hits in 2013.

1. Aaron Sanchez, Dunedin— Has struck out 34 batters in 34 2/3 innings and an ERA of 2.60.

All in all, things are looking up in the upper minors, but not enough to help where needed.

Obviously, a speedy recovery for Happ is the most important thing, and my heart goes out to the guy.

Who takes his next start if he's out for one?  for a month?  longer?  injuries to Nolin and Jenkins meant they are just getting started, last years trio of injured starters are weeks away at least, Johnson could be out a while ... I worry about projected seventh starter Germano who's struggling in AAA.  Dave Bush?  Ortiz?  Vargas?

Deck McGuire?

The good news is you may only need 1 start on May 12th. The Jays have off days on the 13th and 16th so they shouldn't need a 5th starter again until May 23rd, and JJ may be able to make that one.

  • Ramon Ortiz, at this point, is probably the best option with his 2.18 ERA, but in 20 2/3 IP in AAA he has a 3.0 BB/9, 5.7 K/9, 1.7 HR/9 - so his ERA is great, his 2-0 record is perfect but his other stats suggest it wouldn't hold up.
  • Dave Bush has allowed 1.7 HR/9 as well, but 1.4 BB/9 and 6.9 K/9 which are much better figures.
  • Justin Germano has a 6.59 ERA...that'll keep him in AAA regardless of his other stats I suspect
  • Claudio Vargas isn't too bad... 3.10 ERA, 0.3 HR/9, 4.3 BB/9, 7.1 K/9 so his BB are an issue but the rest is nice.
  • Miguel Batista is an interesting one, up to 5 starts now with a 4.87 ERA 0.4 HR/9, 4.0 BB/9 5.3 K/9.  His last outing was poor though with 4 BB, 4 ER in 6 IP.and just 1 K.

Hrm.  At first I was thinking Oritz, but that HR rate is scary, as it is with Bush.  Vargas had 3 good starts to being, then his last 2 he allowed 4 runs each. Batista is probably chomping at the bit but his last game didn't help his cause.  None really jump out as 'yes, give him a shot'.

Let's just get crazy and irresponsible and call up Sanchez to take Happ's next start.

What about Chad Jenkins? Not sure how the timing works with his last start - and he obviously hasn't had much time since coming off the DL - but he might be a better option than the 5 mentioned?

Gerry mentioned in the other thread that Jimenez had made a throw way over second base in the top of the first and wondered if he might have hurt himself on the throw.  The other more pleasing possibility is that he got the call to go to Buffalo to replace Josh Thole who is on his way to the majors; I noticed that Nickeas played yesterday for the Bisons.

If you only need 1 start because of the 2 off days it may make sense to call up a fresh long man before the game and just give the start to Lincoln.

I can't see Johnson being ready to pitch by May 23. People are predicting "late May" and that could easily slip to June. There's no news on his rehab sked or minor-league games, so I would see that as negative. The good news, however, is that Happ's injury seems to be less serious than feared. No indication of a concussion, so far. Seems to be cuts and bruises. Still, the Jays will be careful with him, so I doubt he's ready for May 23 either. At least one start will need to go to a minor-leaguer -- or it could be a "bullpen start" as 92-93 suggests. Last night was almost a bullpen start, as it was, and they did very well.

Might be best 92-93... do a 3 man start - plan on Lincoln for innings 1-3, maybe Cecil for 4-5,  Loup for 6-7, and someone else for 8-9 depending on situation.  Have a long guy for that game called up, send down after if used, then call someone else up for the next game.
Mike Green - Wednesday, May 08 2013 @ 11:46 AM EDT (#271741) #
Lincoln/Cecil 3 and 3 works for me.  In today's game, Maddon will probably put out a lefty-heavy lineup to face Romero as he has done the last couple of years.  Cecil is rested and could come in to go 2-3 innings if needed, which would have the added benefit of stretching him out a bit.
China fan - Wednesday, May 08 2013 @ 11:59 AM EDT (#271743) #
The Jays might be tempted to put Happ on the DL list immediately, just so they can get another reliever onto the team. The bullpen threw almost 8 innings last night, and there's no assurance that Romero won't be leaving the game early tonight. Beck or Carrero would be nice options to have in the bullpen tonight.

On the other hand, if Happ doesn't have a concussion and the Jays don't put him on the DL, there might be a chance that he'd even be ready for that May 23 start. Which seemed unthinkable when he was being carried off on a stretcher last night.
John Northey - Wednesday, May 08 2013 @ 12:04 PM EDT (#271744) #
Jenkins has had just the one start so far.  5 IP 3 H 2 R 1BB 1 SO on the 6th in AA.  Doesn't say much, but I guess if you use the Romero rehab method he could come up :P

Realistically he won't.  In AA we have Austin Bibens-Dirkx who is 28 but in 7 starts has a 2.68 ERA 0.7 HR/9 2.7 BB/9 7.8 SO/9 so he might not be bad - he has had just one start with more than 2 ER allowed.  Of course, he also has a 5.98 ERA in AAA lifetime and has yet to throw one pitch in the majors.  Deck McGuire has a 5.34 ERA so I don't see him coming up yet.  Ryan Tepera has a good ERA (sub 3) but his other figures are worse than McGuire other than H/9.  Marcus Walden has a sub 3 ERA too with 0 HR given up, 2.2 BB/9, 4.0 SO/9 (ick on the K's).   None of the others have impressed either.

Sigh.  No matter how I look at it, Johnny Wholestaff is the best I can think of to fill in for Happ for now.
China fan - Wednesday, May 08 2013 @ 12:12 PM EDT (#271745) #
And now there's concern about Happ's right knee. He was on crutches when he left the hospital this morning, and he was wearing a brace on his leg.

I've been looking at the video replay, trying to understand how he could have injured the knee. He crumpled backwards when he fell, so he didn't bang his knee against the ground. But it's possible, I suppose, that the knee got twisted around as he fell. The replay does seem to show that his leg bent at a slightly odd angle as he fell.
John Northey - Wednesday, May 08 2013 @ 12:28 PM EDT (#271746) #
So 3 guys down in 4 days last year, maybe two guys down with 3 injuries this year?  The ball to the head, twisted knee (I'd guess) for Happ and Johnson being out.

Sure can see why AA kept saying he wanted more starters.

Video of the Gose steal of home is here.  After stampeding Jake Arrieta, the Bisons get to face Jair Jurrjens tonight.
Ryan Day - Wednesday, May 08 2013 @ 01:33 PM EDT (#271756) #
Hopefully Gose has rediscovered his baserunning mojo. He's way too fast to be getting caught as often has so far.
Mike Green - Wednesday, May 08 2013 @ 01:42 PM EDT (#271757) #
Gose has been picked off a lot, and thrown out on the bases a lot.  There may be focus issues.
Mike Green - Wednesday, May 08 2013 @ 07:59 PM EDT (#271784) #
Negrych's two at-bats so far against Jurrjens- a line drive double and a line drive out.  Thole has also singled, as the Bisons lead 3-2.
