The Bisons hit five home runs and scored ten runs which masked Ricky Romero giving up six runs in 3.2 innings. New Hampshire lost, Lansing won and Dunedin were double rained out.

Buffalo 10 Louisville 7

It was the Ricky Romero show yesterday and it was a bit of a stinker. In 3.2 innings Ricky did not register a strikeout. He allowed 15 baserunners while getting 11 outs. Luoisville Fan had a summary in yesterdays MLU, here is the key summary: Ricky never looked comfortable and in control, likely because every inning started as a battle and endured that way.

The offense was strong with 5 home runs. Luis Jimenez, Mauro Gomez, Andy LaRoche, Ryan Goins and Moises Sierra went deep. Josh Thole had 3 hits, Jim Negrych had his usual 2. Anthony Gose was 0-5, his batting average is down to .228 and he is 2 for his last 24. A 5 run fifth was big for the Bisons, Moises Sierra and Andy LaRoche homered in that inning.

New Hampshire 2 Trenton 6

New Hampshire trailed 6-0 and scored a run in the eighth and another in the ninth. Tyson Brummett was back in the rotation as Chad Jenkins was promoted and he gave up 3 runs in 5 innings. Matt Wright also gave up 3 runs.

Kevin Nolan provided the offense, he homered in the eighth and singled to drive in a run in the ninth.

Dunedin at Daytona - 2 games, postponed

The suspended game from Friday, as well as the regular game from Saturday, were rained out.

Great Lakes 5 Lansing 8

Lansing trailed 4-3 in the bottom of the eighth when they scored 5 runs to take the win. Lansing had just 14 base runners, Great Lakes 21, but Lansing got the key hits while the Loons could not. In the key eighth inning the big hit was a bases loaded triple by Balbino Fuenmayor. Balbino then scored on a sac fly. The Lugnuts had 7 hits, no Lugnut had more than one.

Taylor Cole started and went five innings and was charged with four runs, 3 earned. Four relievers combined for four innings, 2 hits but seven walks. They only gave up one run.

Negrych leads the IL in OBP by a mile and in slugging by a more modest amount over Luis Jimenez.  He is hitting the same in May as he did in April, lefties actually a little better than righthanders.  It is extremely rare for a player to emerge as a major league hitter over a period of years after age 25.  Gary Ward did it; Marco Scutaro did it.  I'd sure like to see if Negrych could.

DeRosa is hitting .241/.324/.621 vs. LHP. Unless you're prepared to give up on Bonifacio, which AA is not, there's really no room for Negrych.

There are two phases to the competitive cycle- gathering talent and playing to win.  If you cannot decide which one you are in, you will fail at both.

Gathering talent & playing to win should be accomplished in unison, not as distinct phases.

Bonifacio must be feeling that looming threat from Negrych, because he's responding with a pretty good game today....

Incidentally, I do think DeRosa has a useful role on this team.  He's the only guy who can play 3B capably if Lawrie is out of action; it is best to be prepared for that possibility.  He also is a decent RH power bat off the bench.  You could do worse for the 25th man on the roster. On the other hand, he is a very poor choice to play second base 3 days in a row against LHPs, as happened this week.  He is simply not mobile enough any more.

Once Bonifacio gets going there will be no need for a DeRosa appearance at 2B, but Gibby was looking for offense.

If you think Bonifacio at second base is a good idea, let's just say that we agree to differ.   For his career, he's a wRC+ of 79,  and he's a dreadful fielder at second.  If this is the approach the club will be taking, preferring Bonifacio to Negrych and Blanco to Thole, it's going to be a long sad season.  There is no substitute for judgment.

"Once Bonifacio gets going"

He's a career .262/.322/.316 and he's 28 years old. He's rotten defensively. I don't see any real upside here. Unless I misread your post and "gets going" refers to his leaving town and being replaced by someone better who costs 1/5th as much.

He's actually a career .262/.322/.339 hitter before today's game, which is pretty damn solid for a switch hitting utility player with great speed. He doesn't need "upside" beyond his career norms to provide value to a major league club, but if you're looking for it his 2011 should jump out at you - .296/.360/.393.

92-93, how much value should we really give Bonifacio for his defensive versatility considering that in another thread you expressed your discomfort with him acting as the fourth outfielder for a short period of time while Davis is on the DL?
92-93 - Monday, May 13 2013 @ 01:55 PM EDT (#272107) #
Obviously I can't quantify that, but a guy who can post a .330 OBP and handle 2B/3B/SS/CF has value to a major league club. My discomfort there was more about trying to force Negrych on the roster while you're still carrying Bonifacio; I have problems with his defensive issues when he is your primary backup SS or OF, not when he's the secondary one.

The reports that I have heard on Sierra's defence have not been terrific, for what it's worth.
92-93 - Monday, May 13 2013 @ 02:25 PM EDT (#272110) #
I didn't think Sierra was much of a defender last year either, but he does at least have a strong arm and can't be any worse than Melky out there. It's true though that he is far from an ideal 4th OF, and I wonder if he got the start in CF yesterday in preparation for a role with the Jays.

Pillar at least can play the position. :)

In the "Believe it or not" department, Bonifacio went 29-64 for a batting average of .453 while bunting in 2011 and 2012.  What happened?

92-93 - Monday, May 13 2013 @ 02:37 PM EDT (#272112) #
Mike, don't think I dislike Pillar; I tend to root for fellow tribe members. I wouldn't have a problem with him being the bench fill in for Rajai, and in fact it's pretty easy to justify Pillar>Sierra if he is indeed the better defender. It's only when you suggest Pillar supplanting Melky or Lind in the everyday lineup when you lose me.
Mike Green - Monday, May 13 2013 @ 02:57 PM EDT (#272113) #
July was when I had in mind for Pillar, 92-93.  There's 2 months of baseball to be played before that, with attendant injuries, trades and other developments.

Melky has actually been moving better the last week or so, I thought. That would-be inside-the-park home run that wasn't against the Orioles may represent the nadir of his speed- he looked like Willie Mays Aikens on a bad day.
