Tonight the farm went 2-2, including 2 stinkers and highlighted by a great pitching performance from a former 1st round pick.

Buffalo 7 - Indianapolis 14

Tonight was a night to forget for the Bisons pitching which gave up 14 hits, 14 earned runs, and 7 walks.  Dave Bush, Chad Beck, and Clint Everts were among the pitchers that were shelled tonight.

The Bisons managed to score 7 runs tonight including home runs from Luis Jimenez, and Moises Sierra.  Jim Negrych had 2 hits including a double tonight and a walk, raising his average to 414.

New Hampshire 5 - Portland 4

Deck McGuire continues to pitch well in May, with a quality start tonight of 6ip with 1 earned run, including 2 walks and 8 strikeouts.  Joel Carreno had his first bad outing of the year giving up 2 hits, 3 earned runs,  2 walks and 2 strikeouts.

Ryan Schimpf had 5 walks tonight for the Fisher Cats, and John Tolisano had a 2 run home run.  The Fisher Cats faced former Red-Sox Daniel Bard tonight who seems to be a complete mess currently, as he pitched 1 inning tonight giving up 1 hit, 2 earned runs, 5 walks, and 2 wild pitches.

Dunedin 5 - Fort Myers 4

Casey Lawrence started tonight putting together a quality start of 7 innings with 2 earned runs, 1 walk and 4 strikeouts.   Dustin Antolin and Blake McFarland finished out the game for Dunedin tonight.  Dunedin pitchers were able to keep Fort Myers slugger Miguel Sano to a 0-3 night that included a walk and a strikeout.

Tonight Dunedin's Offense was rolling with 12 hits.  Markus Knecht had 3 hits, while Jon Berti, Peter Mooney and Nick Baligold had 2 hits each.  KC Hobson had a 2 run jack off former big-leaguer Kyle Davies.

Lansing 4 - Lake County 13

Tonight was another night to forget for Lansing who gave up 13 runs, of which only 2 were earned.  Error's from Alonzo Gonzalez, Emilio Guerrero, and Gustavo Pierre lead to the multiple unearned runs.

Alonzo Gonzalez was victimized by the errors tonight as he gave up 12 runs( 2 earned) over 3.1 innings.  Former shortstop Justin Jackson pitched tonight putting up 2 strong innings of 1 hit ball with 2 strikeouts.

Three Stars
3-Ryan Schimpf
2-Casey Lawrence
1-Deck McGuire

Any word on Jackson's stuff? I know he has a cannon of an arm, but wondering if anyone has any info on his velocity.

I'm watching Romero on milb.tv right now, he's given up 3 through 2, only 2 earned. He's had bad luck and terrible defense behind him but just like last start he seems to be completely missing any swing and miss stuff. Lots of grounders at least, he's also behind most batters as well.

Bad third inning for Ricky, three straight walks with two out, threw 10 straight balls at one stage.  Escaped with the bases loaded.

Poor Ricky.

I'm of the belief, and have been for some time, that Ricky's problems are almost entirely all mental. He has always appeared (when you hear him speak/ twitter, and in game) to have a somewhat fragile psyche. I think he is the type of individual that rides success well as it gives him confidence, but when things go poorly they pile on (mentally) and his confidence wains.

I think he has a hard time digging himself out of a psychological hole once the confidence goes. I think he still lacks confidence in his ability. The mind is a very powerful tool that can make or break you.

Couple this with the tweaks to his approach and you have, likely, a situation beyond repair. We are talking about a guy with sustained success in the majors getting a total revamp of mechanics (a very odd scenario).

Good luck to him

Thanks Ramone for the update...Ricky pulled after 3.2 innings, 86 pitches.  Given the 2 errors behind him and the man thrown out at the plate lets call it 4 innings.

86 pitches is too many

6 walks is too many

4 hits is OK, one was an infield hit and another was a grounder up the middle

1 strikeout is not enough

Still lots of work to be done.

The opposing teams announcers actually said comments like "this is tough to watch" and "He's in a groove one minute and completely lost it the next". They camera guy showed Romero waking off the mound when he was pulled and he looked utterly defeated.

He would be completely fine and in his delivery for one batter and then lose his delivery and miss the zone by allot to the next batter. I'm obviously no expert but he looks to be a long, long way away from Toronto.
Mike Green - Thursday, May 16 2013 @ 01:30 PM EDT (#272267) #
I hope Dane Johnson has been with Romero in Buffalo. His judgment that Romero was ready with the new delivery after 1 start in Dunedin appears to have been quite mistaken, and hopefully he is continuing with the project in Buffalo.

Gerry - Thursday, May 16 2013 @ 01:54 PM EDT (#272268) #
I don't think Dane necessarily believed Romero was ready.  He was told what was needed, Romero in Toronto, and like a good company man he publicly agreed with the decision.
Mike Green - Thursday, May 16 2013 @ 02:03 PM EDT (#272269) #
OK.  The linked article has a quote from him, which suggests to me that he agreed with Anthopoulos about Romero's readiness.  If that wasn't the case, it speaks very poorly of Anthopoulos.

In that scenario, AA sends Romero, a player signed to a long-term contract with the club who struggled in 2012 and spring training 2013, to work with Johnson on remaking his delivery and regaining control. After a month working on the delivery and not facing live batters in a game, he has 1 good outing in Dunedin.  Under the hypothetical you suggest, AA tells Johnson he needs a starter and asks whether Romero is ready.  Johnson says no, but AA does it anyway and Johnson does the "company man" thing publicly.
Turner - Thursday, May 16 2013 @ 02:19 PM EDT (#272270) #
Wouldn't be prudent for Johnson to question AA's decision via the media.  I'm sure for the sake of his project he'd question it in confidence.  However, the ultimate decision surely would have been made by AA.
Mike Green - Thursday, May 16 2013 @ 02:25 PM EDT (#272271) #
If Johnson told Anthopoulos privately that Romero wasn't ready, it would be a grave error on Anthopoulos' part to ignore that advice in the circumstances.

In his 1st start, Jesse Goldberg-Strassler noted that his fastball was sitting in the low 90's according to the radar gun (which he admitted is usually inaccurate)

I think you're right, and it looks like it was.

Anyone know why Kenny Wilson is on the DL and when he may be back?
MatO - Thursday, May 16 2013 @ 02:44 PM EDT (#272276) #

What's Brad Arnsberg doing these days?  He managed to fix Romero in a week or two back in 2009 when he was about to be sent to minor league camp.  I'd give him this special project in a second if he's not otherwise occupied.

hypobole - Thursday, May 16 2013 @ 05:41 PM EDT (#272286) #
Opinion only, but I don't think the problem was Romero being fixed, it is staying fixed. I'm sure when AA and Johnson discussed Romero, the discussion centred on whether the fixes would stick. And that is a question no one could answer yes or no to. And as it turned out, the fixes seemed to last all of 3 innings.

And further to that, I think Romero has the baseball equivalent to golfers "yips".

Golfers can read putts as well as they had in the past, but when they strike the ball, there is a disconnect between the brain and the fine muscles and they simply can't sink putts they sank in the past.

On the good news front, 2.0 scoreless for Jimenez (ERA 2.70, but WHIP 1.65 even though today helped), Neil Wagner gets the save (ERA 1.08, WHIP 0.96), and 1B Luis Jimenez hits his 2nd (!) triple of the year to go with a .371/ .652/ 1.087 slash line. But 2 triples? OK, raise your hands if you thought THAT would happen.

Bisons go on to win 6-4, while resting Negrych.

BUT - Dave Bush and Miguel Batista both lasted under 4 innings over the last 2 games, then Ricky does the same. They routinely allow 6+ runs per game, and win by just beating opponents to death. We have GOT to do something about their starting rotation.

I guess they'll get Jenkins in due course, and maybe Ortiz too. But... JJ very uncertain, Happ no sooner than mid-June, and Dickey/Morrow are still iffy. I could see Jenkins and Ortiz both being here a while.

Nice to see Nolin come back in and pick up where he left off.

Stroman is due to pitch for NH this weekend I think.

we might have some pitching help from the minors after all.

They re-made Romero's delivery.  Nothing like repetition before you face major league hitters to keep the butterflies at bay (why do I think yips is some kind of racist insult that I am not aware of?).

Dustin McGowan pitched another inning tonight, one walk, one K, 4 hitters.

"Dustin McGowan pitched another inning tonight, one walk, one K, 4 hitters."

I listened to that inning, he sat mostly 94 with one 95 and one 96.

Mike, you made me look it up...don't want to be offensive. First used in 1962 - origin unknown. On the Wiki page there are 2 pitchers mentioned as having the yips - Steve Blass and Rick Ankiel as well as Chuck Knoblauch and Steve Sax who ended up with major throwing issues.

Here's hoping Ricky never makes this Wiki page.

Yips just rhymes with a racist term. If you don't know what it is, great!

And don't forget Mackey Sasser, the catcher you couldn't accurately throw the ball back to the pitcher.
