Hits were scarce on Friday. The Bisons were one hit in game one of a doubleheader. They were two hit in the nightcap until the sixth inning, but then they broke out with seven runs. They finished with eight hits and a second loss. New Hampshire had five hits and lost. Lansing had five hits too but one of them was a three run home run by Emilio Guerrero. Vancouver had four hits, scored nine runs, and won. Ricky Romero pitched well, six shutout innings. Roberto Osuna also pitched well. For some reason Claudio Vargas was called on to close out game 2 of the Bisons doubleheader and he certainly did nothing of the kind.

Buffalo 0  Pawtucket 1 - game 1

Ricky Romero pitched six innings, he only gave up two hits, walked three and recorded three strikeouts. The threw 83 pitches, 48 strikes. It was another step in the right direction for Romero. He just needs a few more strikes and a few more strikeouts to be ready for the major leagues.

On the other side the Bisons could only record one hit off Allen Webster, a Mike McCoy single in the sixth. Brad Lincoln came on in the seventh. With two outs an infield single, a stolen base and a ground ball single made a loser of Lincoln.

Buffalo 7  Pawtucket 8 - game 2, 9 innings

Game two was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when super prospect Xander Bogaerts hit a two run home run off Justin Germano. Germano went five innings and those two runs were it.

The Bisons offense had just two hits through five innings after getting one hit in the first game. But the sixth inning was turnaround time, the Bisons had five hits, more than they had in the previous 12 innings. Along with a few walks they scored seven runs in the inning. Ryan Goins had two hits, in the inning.

The Bisons took a 7-2 lead to the bottom of the seventh, needing three outs for the win and he DH split. Mickey Storey loaded the bases on a hit batter, a walk and an error. A ground out made it 7-3 and for some reason Claudio Vargas came on in relief. He gave up a 3 run home run to make it 7-6. That was followed by a walk and a double to tie the game. John Stilson finished the inning so why was he not called on to stop the bleeding when it was 7-6? Joel Carreno pitched the ninth and allowed the losing run.

Erie 6  New Hampshire 3

Ryan Tepera put on 12 baserunners in five innings and was charged with three runs. Tyson Brummett and Randy Boone also gave up runs.

The Fisher Cats scored a run in three separate innings. They only had five hits.

Dunedin - All Star Break

Bowling Green 1  Lansing 3

Roberto Osuna was tagged for an unearned run in six innings. The six innings was longest start of the season. I guess if your elbow is liable to break down you might as well test it. In the 6 innings his line was 4 hits, one walk, 6 K's.

Emilio Guerrero was the hitting hero, he hit his first home run of the year, and it was a three run shot to centre field. Guerrero had two of Lansing's five hits.

Vancouver 9  Tri-City 5

Nine run on four hits. They scored four runs in the fourth with just one hit. Walks, error, hit batters, wild pitches, Tri-City were nothing like a well-oiled machine. In the fifth Vancouver scored four more runs and it was more of the same. The one hit in that inning was at least triple by Jason Leblebjian.

Vancouver registered 11 walks. Home town boy Justin Atkinson had two hits. Eric Brown went five innings and got th win. Of note, Marcus Brisker made his professional pitching debut, he was a little shaky, walking two and giving up a run.

#3 - Justin Atkinson

I saw a bit of the second Bisons game. Anthony Gose made an incredible running catch to rob Brock Holt of a hit. He ranged from left center to right center field to haul one in at the track. He's kinda fast!

Romero's results look good for this start, but the number of strikes/pitches says he hasn't progressed that much: 48 of 83 pitches.

That will get you killed in the majors. Until that improves, it would be a bad idea to have him on the MLB team.

I know it's only his 2nd start coming back from injury but wondering if Osuna's next start could be in Dunedin when the 2nd A+ season starts.

Sean Nolin left tonights game in the first inning after he was hit by a batted ball.

I was listening to the game when Nolin was hit, the announcer said it was on his pitching arm, sounds like he did want to stay in after though.

Also this tweet from Elliot tonight:

@elliottbaseball
"Jays let go 8 amateur scouts including veteran Joel Grampietro (FL) who signed Drew Hutchison, Adam Lind + hard-working Mike Medici (IL"

Seems odd to me right after the draft.

It would be interesting to know why they were let go.  I suspect the new scouting director is a big part of it though - I recall reading this was his first draft and I wonder if he found those 8's advise to not be useful thus felt there was no need to keep them.  Or if they advised some players would sign for $x then those same players demanded significantly more once drafted.  Or it could just be cost cutting by Rogers.  Who knows?

Cost cutting by Rogers? I strongly dislike that type of speculation. Rogers has shown the money is there. Perhaps they were, the scouts, ineffective or perhaps they have their eye on 'new blood' to scout these areas.

Do the Jays still use advance scouts? I know some organizations have re-assigned them to other scouting areas and just use video to scout other teams.

Also, when the big scouting hires were done by AA, I'm guessing few if any were lured from other orgs. And when you hire a bunch of out-of-work people in any line of work one has to assume there will be some that work out and some that don't. And maybe the Hutch and Lind guy was also the Dickie Thon guy.

In other words, I don't have a clue. And I will probably never find out why any of these firings happened.

There are changes in what Scouts/Teams look for in the prospects they draft. Perhaps these 8 just aren't good enough. We will get a better idea when/if they are replaced.
Gerry - Sunday, June 16 2013 @ 08:47 AM EDT (#274238) #
The Jays last few drafts have not been very good. Who bears the responsibility? The Jays are on their third scouting director since AA took over, there should be some turnover at the scout level too. After the draft is the most reasonable time to turnover amateur scouts.

You're likely right Gerry, but I did ask Ben Badler of BA on twitter last night about it as he had retweeted Elliot earlier tweet regarding the scouts being let go and he said:

"@BenBadler is that kind of odd right after the draft"

@BenBadler:
@StivBators "Yes. Staffing changes usually happen after the season."
