So, for those who think the Jays should have bid much higher for Yu Darvish: how much should they bid for Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez, the Cuban RHP who is expected to get $40-million to $60-million? Anthopoulos flew to Tijuana on Friday to see him pitch, according to a tweet last night by Bob Elliott.

I guess with cell phones, one can make roster moves from Mexico because with Lind and De Rosa hurt the bench seems a might tad thin.

I can only hope Rogers is not forcing AA to make decisions based on roaming fees.

there's not that much info out there on Gonzalez, but from what I can gather from scouting reports in other places/small amounts of video:

- 6-2/6-3, 185, 26, hasn't pitched much competetively since 2010 because of suspensions from the Cuban league for wanting to defect + some bone spur surgery.

- can sit 93-95 and touch up to 96, has a changeup and a curve that he plays with, altering its shape and break. Has a kind of forkball that looks like a splitter w/ arm-side movement like some kind of 2-seam hybrid.

- I'm not some mechanics expert, but they look smooth and clean. High leg kick stands out, but he's got an athletic frame that makes it look pretty easy.

- Cuban league stats lag behind the stuff in the scouting reports. Pedestrian K% in 2009-2010, for example.

- no major red flags on command/control that I can find. Can locate FB high and low, gets on top of CB well.

I don't think I'd have much of a problem giving him 5/12$ for 60 million. Frame him as a 26 year old entering free agency for the first time with a pitcher's frame and athletic mechanics, solid command, at least the ability to hit 95/96, and interesting breaking balls, but who doesn't have much of a recent track record because of suspensions or injuries.

12$ mn a year until he's 31 is basically expecting him to produce as an average to above-average #3 pitcher over that time (aiming for 2-3 wins production per year over the contract). Given the money-drenched conditions of baseball free agency that are coming up, that contract doesn't seem like a crazy risk for what looks like not-insignificant (if not-Darvish) upside.

I suspect AA's trip to see Gonzalez was purely for due diligence, especially with the Dodgers apparently aggressively in on him.

Interesting story on Pillar. Good insight on working with Nunnally on his hitting approach and the disappointments on going undrafted his junior year and so late his senior. Longshot to ever be a star, but he has kept beating the odds to even be where he is now. I jokingly referred to him as the "uberprospect" when he was in Lansing last year, but after learning more about him since, I have to say, despite his limited upside, he has become my favorite minor leaguer.
