The affiliates had another disappointing day, winning just one of five games - none of them south of the border. Lansing - save for four Lugnuts - had the night off because of the Midwest League All-Star Game.

Columbus 6 Buffalo 2

Columbus, OH
- Sean Nolin (2-4) was perfect for 2.1 innings, including three strikeouts, but he would not retire another batter. He plunked a hitter, gave up a hit and walked a pair which eventually resulted in three runs after fellow lefty Mike Zagurski could only strand one of three runners on the bases. Zagurski had trouble finding the strike zone by walking four batters but he struck out a pair over 1.2 innings. John Stilson worked a pair of scoreless frames, surrendering just one hit. Ryan Tepera worked a scoreless seventh but gave up a three-spot in the eighth as the Indians affiliate got to him for five hits. Tepera did whiff a pair.

The Herd's two runs came in the fourth and fifth innings to make it a one-run game. Brad Glenn drove home the first run with a double and Adron Chambers singled home the other. Jared Goeddert had a three-hit evening and Jonathan Diaz had two. Kevin Pillar was 0-for-3 with a walk while Colby Rasmus and Ryan Goins both wore the collar in their four at-bats.

Altoona 4 New Hampshire 2

Manchester, NH - The Pirates affiliate belted two homers against P.J. Walters but that's all they got against the former Jay, who limited the damage to solo shots. He lasted eight innings and yielded just six hits while striking out six and walking nobody. Walters also recorded 10 outs on the ground. Randy Boone (0-3) came on in the ninth and coughed up the winning and insurance runs on three hits, a walk and a hit by pitch.

K.C. Hobson
made his Double-A debut a memorable one by leading off the seventh with a home run. The Fisher Cats tied things up in the eighth when Mike McDade doubled home a Kenny Wilson infield hit. Wilson had a couple of hits while Andy Burns doubled, walked and was plunked. Jon Berti, Ryan Schimpf and Kevin Nolan also made a dent in the hit column. Derrick Chung had a walk in his Fisher Cats debut.

Brevard County 10 Dunedin 5

Viera, FL - Ben White (3-4) hit the showers early as he lasted one inning and was whacked for six runs on five hits and two walks. Chad Girodo lasted three times as long as White and struck out four batters but he was burned for a pair of runs on five hits. The Brewers affiliate continued to pour it on against Efrain Nieves to the tune of two runs on three hits and two walks. Nieves did strike out one batter in his inning of work. Tony Davis struck out the side in the seventh. Wil Browning and Danny Barnes turned in one-hit frames with Browning striking out two and Barnes whiffing one.

Dunedin tried to chip away at a 6-0 deficit with runs in the third and fourth innings on an L.B. Dantzler RBI single and a Gustavo Pierre home run. They added three more runs in the eighth on an RBI double by Santiago Nessy and a two-run double by Emilio Guerrero. Nessy and Guerrero had the only multi-hit efforts. Dantzler and Dalton Pompey both had singles and walks. Christian Lopes had a double. Marcus Knecht was 0-for-4.

Salem-Keizer 4 Vancouver 3

Salem, OR - The C's bullpen coughed it up again for a second straight night and got no help from the left side of the infield. Starlyn Suriel did his job by posting five shutout innings, holding down the Giants affiliate to three hits and two walks while striking out three. Joe Lovecchio (1-1) was charged for four runs over 2.2 innings but only one was earned thanks to errors by Franklin Barreto and David Harris at short and third respectively. The one by Harris especially proved costly as it was preceded by a two-run homer. Lovecchio was slapped around for five hits and a walk but he struck out a pair. Francisco Gracesqui struck out the only hitter he faced.

All three Vancouver runs were scored in the first. Harris singled home the first run, the second run scored on a balk and Sean Hurley had an RBI base hit. Harris had two hits and Barreto singled and walked. Tim Locastro also had a base hit and a base on balls. Jonathan Davis reached twice with a pair of walks. Roemon Fields and Boomer Collins doubled.

DSL Blue Jays 3 DSL Tigers 1

San Pedro de Macoris, DR
- The Jays broke through for three runs in the fifth inning as Bryan Lizardo took one for the team with the bases loaded. A wild pitch scored the second run and Antony Fuentes singled home the third run. Fuentes had a three-hit day and Rodrigo Orozco chipped in with two. Miguel Almonte and Manuel Herazo both singled and were hit by a pitch. Lizardo also had a walk to go along with his HBP. Jesus Severino singled and Francisco Rodriguez walked.

Jose Nova
put in four shutout innings, giving up just two hits, a walk and a hit by pitch to go along with three strikeouts. The lefty also induced four groundball outs. Yonardo Herdenez (2-0) also kept posting goose eggs on the scoreboard before allowing one run in the ninth. He scattered five hits over five frames with one strikeout and no walks.

Midwest League All-Star Game @ West Michigan
- Mid West All Stars 7 Mid East All Stars 0

Comstock Park, MI - Mitch Nay was 0-for-3 while Matt Dean and Derrick Loveless were both 0-for-2 for the East squad. Griffin Murphy pitched two-thirds of a scoreless inning with one walk and one strikeout.

Where's the DR located these days? Arctic? Kidding.

Thx for the write up JB. And enjoy the opener tonight, wish I could make it but I have beer league softball instead.

Nice first couple of games for Nessy in A+. If he can hold his own offensively at this level at this age, then he's a legit prospect again, after a year ot wo kind of in the wilderness.

Nessy is going to be 22 in August.  He was promoted as far as I can tell, not because he had done anything great in Lansing, but because Derrick Chung had been promoted (on merit) from Dunedin.  The one thing he has going for him is the typical erratic development curve for catchers.  I will be mostly waiting for reports on his defense, which up until now has not been regarded as a particular strong point.
uglyone - Wednesday, June 18 2014 @ 12:02 PM EDT (#288594) #
I'm pretty sure Nessy's not 22 until december. He's a legit 21 yr old, which is still age appropriate for his level.

Here's his minor league career so far:

Age 17 (Rk-): 162pa, 8.6bb%, 27.2k%, 110wrc+
Age 18 (Rk-): 144pa, 5.6bb%, 20.1k%, 122wrc+
Age 19 (Rk+): 178pa, 7.3bb%, 26.4k%, 113wrc+
Age 20 (A): 242pa, 5.4bb%, 24.4k%, 88wrc+
Age 21 (A): 168pa, 10.7bb%, 20.8k%, 98wrc+

His first three years weren't great, but IMO decent for a defense first catcher with some possible power projection down the road. Last year he dropped off quite a bit, and was a well below league average bat.

What Nessy was able to do this year in his 2nd try at Lansing was 1) put up league average offense (98wrc+) as a defense-first catcher, and 2) post by far the best walk rate he's ever shown (10.7bb%).

I think if he can similarly hold his own offensively in A+ after this promotion, then as a defense first catcher with potential power projection IMO he becomes an interesting prospect again.

If he flops in Dunedin then of course this is all for naught.

LF, do you care to comment Nessy's defence in Lansing?  He was well-regarded in the Appalachian League in 2012, but I haven't been reading great reports since then, and Lansing's pitchers haven't exactly thrived early this year (this may or may not have anything to do wiht Nessy).

Anyone have any thoughts on why we picked up Chambers? Not sure what he offers the team other than a world series ring. Is it his magical veteranness that made him attractive to AA?

I hope Goedert gets a shot to be the lefty masher envisioned by uglyone. It makes toronto an attractive destination for minor league vets if good play gets them a call-up - I was really pulling for Negrych last year to get a shot.

Mike,

I would agree with the reports that you have on Nessy's defense.  It isn't great and I would regard it as fair at best.  That being said, I will give him some credit.  He was atrocious last year and I really questioned if he was going to stick there.  He has improved greatly over what I saw last year which is why I have him currently rated as fair.  You can tell Sal Fasano and the rest of the develpment staff have worked with him a lot.  That being said, I don't see him as an MLB capable catcher.

Sean Nolin has been placed back on the DL today, with a groin strain.  After a great start to his season, he's been enduring frustration since then.  It's too bad, because this could have been a season when he had a good opportunity for some major-league playing time.
Mike Green - Wednesday, June 18 2014 @ 03:27 PM EDT (#288604) #
Thanks, CF.  I wondered if Nolin was hurt again because he was pulled rather abruptly last night.  I guess groin strains are better than torn UCLs, but  this pitcher's "blessure de semaine/injury of the week" is getting tiresome.

And thanks, LF. There is nothing like seeing for yourself.

There was a reason the Jays drafted/signed (one NDFA) six Catchers. Three are signed (Morgan - HS, Garcia - SR, Wellman - SR) with a fourth (Pentecost - JR) signing soon for sure. #11 was a pick of need.

Ben Wagner, the Buffalo broadcaster, has just tweeted the following:  "Esmil Rogers will work in the Bisons rotation. 60-70 pitches tonight. Kyle Drabek in pen, scheduled to throw tonight."

I wonder if this signals that Drabek will be converted to a reliever?  With Nolin's latest injury, Drabek could have stayed in the rotation, I think, even if Rogers is being added to the rotation.  The Jays have promoted Austin Bibens-Dirkx to Buffalo, but he's a journeyman and could have been left in NH if the Jays preferred to keep Drabek in the rotation.

As for Rogers:  I think it's a good move to get him stretched out and ready for a possible spot start in Toronto if he is needed there.  Hendriks is probably ahead of him in the depth chart, but Rogers is another good option to have.

PeterG - Wednesday, June 18 2014 @ 05:32 PM EDT (#288611) #
This makes sense but Liz would be the pitcher I would have moved up from NH. he has not really been challenged at that level and his one start with Bisons was on the better side of average.

Daniel Norris is making his AA debut tonight. He has pitched three innings so far and has given up a solo home run. But that was the only baserunner. Norris has 3 K's so far.

Ah, too bad.

If he can't catch, he's not a prospect.

Almost goes six, with 4hts, 1bb, and 9k......but 2 of those hits were homers.

Still a solid AA debut.

I watched some of Norris's start on milb.tv, the second HR was cheaper than the worst HR to right field in Yankee Stadium, it was a fly ball out in just about every other park.
