There were some ugly lines on Sunday. Three Bison pitchers combined to turn a 4-0 lead into an 8-4 deficit in the eighth inning. Andy Burns made an error in the inning that helped negate his first AAA home run. That inning also lost the win for Felix Doubront who pitched six strong innings. The Fisher Cats made four errors and allowed five unearned runs. Dunedin gave up seven runs, three of them unearned and Lansing pitchers gave up 20 hits. On the bright side Rowdy Tellez hit a home run and Anthony Alford reached base three times, Derrick Loveless had three hits.

Buffalo 5 Toledo 8

Buffalo led 4-0 heading to the bottom of the eighth. Colt Hynes put a couple of men on so Bobby Korecky came into the game. Korecky gave up three hits and a walk while only getting one out. He could have had a second out but Andy Burns made an error. Now down 6-4, Luis Perez was called on but he also gave up a double and a sac fly and the Bisons were down 8-4. A consolation run in the ninth made it a 8-5 final.

Feliex Doubront had an excellent start. He pitched six innings, a three hitter with two walks and three strikeouts. Chris Dickerson was 3-5, Andy Burns was 2-5 with his first AAA home run, a three run shot.

Altoona 11 New Hampshire 3

New Hampshire made four errors leading to five unearned runs. Casey Lawrence hung in for a while but 11 hits in less than four innings leads to trouble, he was charged with nine runs, four earned.

Matt Newman and Shane Opitz each had two hits. Dwight Smith had an oh-fer and his .300 average is gone again.

St Lucie 7 Dunedin 4

Justin Shafer has had an up and down start to his time in the FSL. Sunday was a down day, he was charged with six runs, although only three of them were earned. Jeremy Gabryszwski pitched three innings in relief and he put seven runners on but escaped with one run allowed.

Derrick Loveless was 3-4 with a walk and two RBI. Loveless was hitting over .300 for much of April but has struggled recently. Boomer Collins also had two hits.

Fort Wayne 12 Lansing 7

Lansing surrendered 20 hits to Fort Wayne. Colton Greene gave up nine hits, Starlyn Suriel seven and Colton Turner four. Lansing were down 11-5 in the fifth.

Rwody Tellez hit his sixth home run to tie Richard Urena. Urena had two hits and two RBI. Anthony Alford walked twice and had a hit.

3 Stars

3rd star: Derrick Loveless

2nd star: Chris Dickerson

1st star: Felix Doubront

Alford continues to get on base with 26 BB's vs. 31K's thus far & has 11 doubles among his 33 hits (soon to turn 21 yrs old). Very encouraging. Tellez is showing some power, K's need to come down but at 20 years old I like his progress a great deal. DJ Davis is also showing improvement in pitch recognition, lets hope this trend continues. Some exciting prospects in Lansing!
Is JD Davis injured? He has not appeared in a game since the 16th yet I have not found him on the DL listings in Dunedin or Lansing. Time for Matt Boyd to test his stuff in Buffalo, he's simply been dominant. Nice to see Doubront off to a good start in Buffalo, only 8 hits over 15 IP with 10K's; be nice to see the K's increase in his next outings.

Who gets called up first? Doubront or Wolf?
Chuck - Monday, May 25 2015 @ 10:52 AM EDT (#301191) #
I believe Wolf has a June 1 opt out. He may try to leverage his success to get a shot at starting somewhere rather than perhaps merely accepting the role as last man in the Jays' pen.

Wolf cannot help the Jays. Let him walk if he wants. Perhaps they fixed Doubront in extended. A few more good starts in Buffalo and he may get a chance in Toronto.

Alford might turn out to be a very good risk by AA.  If he went to college and never signed I wonder where he'd be in the draft - first round now that football is over for him?  Tellez is similar.  Shows why drafting risky players later is a good idea and trying to save some cash to use on them can work well too.  Given you only get 2 or 3 guys normally from a draft who will get 1+ WAR in their careers taking chances is critical.

Given how nicely that Richmond spot start seemed to work out for the rest of the SPs, maybe they will use both Wolf and Doubront at some point in the next several weeks.

More than any other player perhaps, I am pulling for Anthony Alford. The kid from Mississippi who came from a football area, got in a spot of trouble as a young guy, and is trying now to make it in baseball. I bet a lot of adjustment to make on a personal basis, and I hope he makes it.

if you discount anyone with major league time, I think u have to rate Alford as our #1 prospect right now or perhaps 1 and 1A along with Jeff Hoffman.

Afternoon game from Lansing. Crazy stuff from Alford. He goes 0-1 with 4 BB's and a K and scores 4 runs. He's like a MWL Rickey Henderson. Not to be outdone, Urena goes 3-3 with a 2B, his 7th HR and 4th BB of the season and also scores 4 runs! Tellez was 2-5 with 2 2B's.

If I did a top 10 Jays Prospects, my list would look like this:

1. Jeff Hoffman
2. Daniel Norris
3. Anthony Alford
4. Dalton Pompey
5. Max Pentecost
6. Richard Urena
7. Miguel Castro
8. Rowdy Tellez
9. Sean Reid-Foley
10. Dwight Smith Jr/Matthew Smoral

This is under the assumption that Aaron Sanchez, Devon Travis, and Roberto Osuna no longer qualify as prospects.

Tellez moving well up the prospect ranks as well. Urena was likely already in the top 5. Imo, there are 14 players currently on the Lansing roster that have a CHANCE to make it to the majors and I am not including Dawson or McBroom whom many would likely place ahead of some of my choices.

Let's not over-romanticize things. The Jays gave him a huge sum of money to play baseball, and he barely committed to that in order to pursue an even bigger NFL payday. Then the football plan got derailed after he was arrested, and subsequently suspended, and the Jays offered him even more money to commit to baseball.

His career is off to a great start, but I don't see a whole lot of struggle and toil there.

Alford is currently leading all of minor league baseball in OBP (min. 100 ABs) at .481, next closest is Carlos Correa at .459.

Also, who had Urena tied for the league lead in HRs?

The Jays have 4 (Alford, Urena, Tellez and Jansen), and maybe a 5th (Davis), interesting position prospects at Lansing where both the scouting and the statistical reports suggests they are real prospects. The previous grouping at Lansing (Nay, Dean and Lugo) have all had pretty favourable scouting reports but the statistical results have not really backed those reports up (yet). Even better, Alford, Urena and Jansen all profile well at difficult defensive positions.

Ryan, you completely missed my point. I'll leave it there.

Alford is also 6 out of 7 stealing bases.  He has scored 30 runs in 29 games.  Love it.

i'd make room for Jansen in that top 10.

and despite the hype, i'd hesitate to slot hoffman #1 yet. talent is there but for me he didn't dominate college quite the way an elite arm should. i'll wait for him to prove it in pro ball first.

I would expect Norris, Castro and Pompey to play enough this year in the majors to be ineligible as prospects.
Norris has thrown 103 pitches in a game at Buffalo so he is stretched out. Castro 73 pitches in his last game so he is getting stretched out. With our thin OF Pompey could come back up because there is a need for outfielders.

Someone coming up for 1 spot start is IMO a sure thing. I would love to see them dominate in that game.

i hate when people use the word "thin" when they mean "injured".
