Daniel Norris pitched in from of Alex Anthopoulos on Wednesday and the results were mixed. Norris was victimized somewhat by his teammates but he only had one strikeout. AA could have gone to AA to see John Anderson and two relievers shutout Portland. Dalton Pompey had two hits. AA could have gone to Lansing to see Chris Carlson hit a tenth inning go ahead and game winning home run.

Dunedin and Jairo Labourt were beaten up, Vancouver had no offense, Angel Perdomo had a Jekyll and Hyde start for Bluefield and the GCL Jays came out on the wrong end of a walk-off.

Gwinnett 6 Buffalo 2

Alex Antholoulos made the trip to Buffalo to see Daniel Norris start. Norris gave up five runs but pitched better than that. In the third inning Norris walked the lead off hitter then slipped when attempting to field a bunt putting two on. The next hitter bunted too and catcher Sean Ochinko elected to try for the force at third but the throw was late. The bases were loaded and no ball had gone more than 30 feet. The next hitter flew out to left and the runner on third went for home. The throw was in time but Ochinko dropped the ball, he then tried to throw out the hitter at second and that let another runner come home to score. Then a wild pitch on a strikeout brought in the fourth run, the Buffalo broadcast crew thought it was a passed ball. In the next inning, left fielder Alex Hassan slipped, turning a single into a triple. That led to a fourth run. Norris did give up a couple more runs, one in the sixth and one in the seventh. Norris' line was 7 6 6 4 2 1. Norris was better than his line but not dominant.

The hitters did not impress AA, Sean Ochinko hit a two run home run to account for all the runs.

New Hampshire 2 Portland 0

Three pitchers combined for the shutout. John Anderson went 6.2 innings, didn't walk anyone and had 4 K's. Chad Girodo relieved Anderson and went four up, four down. Wil Browning went three up, three down for the save.

New Hampshire got their first run in the third, Ian Parmley, Jorge Flores and Dalton Pompey all singled. In the fifth Dwight Smith singled in Parmley who had walked. Pompey, Smith and Parmley led the offense with two hits each.

Brevard County 12 Dunedin 3

Jairo Labourt was just named to play in the prospects game. He will need to pitch better than he did on Wednesday. In five innings he allowed 8 hits and 3 walks leading to 6 runs. Alberto Tirado did well in three shutout innings, three hits given up. Matt Dermody was tattoo'd for 6 runs in the ninth.

JD Davis had three hits for the Jays. Mitch Nay drove in two runs with a double, LB Dantzler drove in the third run with another double.

Lansing 3 South Bend 2 - 10 innings

Chris Carlson hit a home run with two outs in the top of the tenth inning for the win. Carlos Ramirez got the win by pitching three innings. Catcher Michael De La Cruz gets credit for throwing out a lead off single trying to steal in the bottom of the tenth. Ramirez replaced Starlyn Suriel who went seven innings, eight hits, two walks, four K's.

De La Cruz went 3-4 with an RBI in addition to the caught stealing. Ryan McBroom had two hits, , Boomer Collins had the other RBI.

Spokane 3 Vancouver 0

Number one pick Jon Harris started for the Canadians. He was charged with one run in three innings on three hits with just one K. Jon Wandling wne t five and gave up two runs.

But the offense was shutout on six hits. Gunnar Heidt and Kevin Garcia each had two of the hits.

Bluefield 4 Burlington 5

The Jays went down 5-1 and fell just short in their rally. They out hit the Bees 13-6. Angel Perdomo had one really bad inning. Over six innings he gave up five hits, but four of them were in one inning, and two of them were home runs. Grayson Huffman pitched two shutout innings to lower his ERA to 12.

Deiferson Barreto hit his first home run of the season and a triple too. Rodrigo Orozco, Christian Williams and Freddy Rodriguez also had two hits. Mattingly Romanin had two Sac Flies.

GCL Jays 4 GCL Yankees 5

The Jays battled back twice to tie the game but lost in a bottom of the ninth walk off when Jays shortstop Andrew Florides made a two out throwing error. 18 year old Hansel Rodriguez started for the Jays and held the Yankees hitless through four. But he lost it in the fifth, three hits including two triples led to three Yankee runs.

Levi Scott, 28th round pick, had a double and a home run. Owen Spiwak from Mississauga, 10th round, also had two hits. Bryan Lizardo, 17 years old, had a triple and has his average up to .308.

Report Guerrero Jr signs.

Alright...let's get him to Vancouver and lets rock! Blue Jays OF by 2017. I jokes about bringing him to Vancouver. Great signing! $4.1M reportedly.

Anthopoulos was asked about Felix Doubront and Chris Colabello in the perspectives as former and current Bisons players. Except Anthopoulos commented much on Norris' performance, Alex's comment on Doubront and other Bisons' players were more or less thoughtful , in my opinion. At least Anthopoulos knows Doubront's good and sustained performance.

great news on vlad jr.

with the team blowing past the IFA spending limit, does this mean we spend a bunch more this year since we are already penalized?  what does it mean for the future?
Lylemcr - Thursday, July 02 2015 @ 11:54 AM EDT (#304132) #
My 3 favorite players of all time
1. Andre Dawson
2. Vlady Guerrero SR
3. Ken Griffey Jr

I am sure happy my 2nd and 3rd can unite to make one.

i know the jays signed an SS ifa yesterday, so vlad isn't the only one.

How do you know Ugly?

Have not seen any others linked to Jays yet although I assume there will be some.

Yesterday would have been the day prior to the deadline.

Sortable July 2 board here. From what I hear, it'll be Vlad Jr. and then just some cheaper guys. We're not going after any of the other top guys.

If the signing was yesterday, July 1st, then this player probably counts for last year.
bpoz - Thursday, July 02 2015 @ 01:45 PM EDT (#304155) #
The Jay's have a signing Bonus Pool of $2,324,100. Then there is the Allotted $700,00 base. I do not know if that is included in the $2.3 mil.

There are penalties for exceeding the signing pool amount. The D'Backs have a pool of $5.4 mil compared to the Jay's $2.3 mil and are a penalized team. They cannot sign anyone for over $300,000. That is per player.

So it looks to me like their pool money is basically useless to them. If it is allowed then they should trade pool money to a team that can use it.

Sorry. This was all explained by Fangraphs.

Carl Wise and Toronto native Connor Panas made their Vancouver debuts for Canada Day and were slotted in the four and five spots in the batting lineup. Wise was 0-for-4 and Panas got a hit and a walk but was promptly picked off first base after his single. It was not a stellar debut for Wise, who had a chopper hit to him at third that was ruled to be a run-scoring double. He also struck out with two men on in the first and Panas was sawed off to end the first inning threat.

Gunnar Heidt has had a nice two games at the plate since his return from Lansing but he tried to advance to third and fell down on a ground ball to short, making him an easy out.

Jon Harris wasn't nearly as good as he was in his debut. He lasted an out longer, going three full frames, but Spokane made some decent contact on him. He threw mostly fastballs that topped out at 93.

The C's offence has been shutout twice in the last three games. They're four games behind Everett and are in last place and will have to pick it up quickly if they're going to have any shot at the first-half division title.

apparently we signed this kid from the same academy as vlad -Yeison Esteban Valdez, 18.

might just be a courtesy sign, given his age.

Did a quick perusal of error totals the past 4 seasons in Vancouver. The 2 worst seasons seem to be Barretto's 26 in 73 games last year and Thon's 16 in 45 games the year prior.

Just a guess, but Wise will end up closer to Barretto than Thon, if he stays at 3rd. And that's not counting the 5 in 7 games Wise played in Bluefield.

Tim Locastro, it was nice knowing you.

Just got word on Twitter he's been traded to the Dodgers along with Chase Dejong for some international pool money.
PeteMoss - Thursday, July 02 2015 @ 03:31 PM EDT (#304172) #
Ah.. Locastro was a fun prospect. Not sure he has the bat to ever really turn into anything at the higher levels but his slugging percentage was up this year so it could develop.
hypobole - Thursday, July 02 2015 @ 03:46 PM EDT (#304175) #
Could someone explain how trading these players for pool money helps, since $3.9 million for Vlad jr. puts us into the penalty phase even if we get exactly 50% more than our assigned pool amount.
uglyone - Thursday, July 02 2015 @ 03:49 PM EDT (#304176) #
i don't know the hows about it, but apparently this gives them a full $1m in ifa pool money.
Hodgie - Thursday, July 02 2015 @ 03:56 PM EDT (#304177) #
What it does by reducing the overage is reduce the penalty from 2 years to 1. That said, as I watch the RedSox "convince" Top-20 IFA prospects to sign for $300K I wonder how much teeth the penalty actually has. IFA is a seedy game....
hypobole - Thursday, July 02 2015 @ 04:01 PM EDT (#304178) #
I think I got it. We'll end up only getting a one year penalty rather than 2 years, plus save whatever amount we get from Dodgers in taxes.
85bluejay - Thursday, July 02 2015 @ 04:06 PM EDT (#304180) #
I wonder if the Jays may try to buy more pool money to negate any penalty. Good move by the Dodgers - that new front office is really worth every penny.
uglyone - Thursday, July 02 2015 @ 04:09 PM EDT (#304182) #
Looks like it's worth $1.263m and one less year of penalty to us.

that imo is far more than what locastro and dejong are. i don't see how their value is even in that ballpark.
hypobole - Thursday, July 02 2015 @ 04:12 PM EDT (#304183) #
Yeah Hodgie, I wonder how many much less heralded prospects signed by the Red Sox for surprisingly high bonuses had the same buscone training them as their primo signings?

I'm sure the buscone will allocate the money to each prospect as per the contracts, since integrity is their hallmark.
jerjapan - Thursday, July 02 2015 @ 04:14 PM EDT (#304184) #
man, i hate these accounting deals - i thought they were basketball and (occasionally), hockey only.

so how do you evaluate a deal like this?  was it a good move for us?  for the dodgers?
85bluejay - Thursday, July 02 2015 @ 04:17 PM EDT (#304185) #
Earlier it was rumoured that the Jays would be big spenders in this year's IFA market - maybe the jays decided not to go up against the behemoth LA Dodgers who are spending like crazy this year or maybe ownership tightened the purse-strings.
Jevant - Thursday, July 02 2015 @ 04:24 PM EDT (#304187) #
Both?  Jays save a year on penalty, Dodgers were going to be hit with it anyways, so decided to pay a little for a couple of prospects.

"I am sure happy my 2nd and 3rd can unite to make one."

I know it was a monumental decision by the Supreme Court, Lylemcr, but let's not push it!
Hodgie - Thursday, July 02 2015 @ 04:53 PM EDT (#304189) #
My back of the napkin math puts the Jays at just a shade under the 15% threshold for the 2 year penalty so it likely a good indicator that they are done otherwise there was no point in trading DeJong and Locastro. That said, I don't know how disappointed anyone can be. There has been no indication that Rogers will ever go on a drunken spending spree to the extent that the Dodgers currently are and what looks to be the 4th or 5th largest signing bonus and an outlay of about $4.4M after penalty is hardly penny pinching.
Mike Green - Thursday, July 02 2015 @ 05:01 PM EDT (#304190) #
DeJong was on the DL.  I missed that.  Does anybody know why?

Sean Reid-Foley and Richard Urena have been promoted to Dunedin according to Mike Wilner on twitter.
Spifficus - Thursday, July 02 2015 @ 06:39 PM EDT (#304198) #
Further to the potential importance of lowering the IFA penalties from 2 years to 1 is the possibility of an international draft in the next CBA. It's possible that they could impose penalties similar to the current draft (losing their top pick). Of course, it's also possible there would be an amnesty (either totally or a lesser penalty) for those that incurred penalties. It's also quite possible that the status quo will continue to exist in two years. I'm not saying this was a major factor in deciding their IFA plans this year, but it could have been a consideration.

De Jong had a sore back.
Mike Green - Thursday, July 02 2015 @ 08:50 PM EDT (#304215) #
It's been a good night on the farm. Jeff Hoffman pitched well for 5 and 2/3 in a D-Jay win, but Miguel Castro was even better, retiring all 6 batters he faced including 4 by strikeout.  Dalton Pompey is 2-3 with his 6th Eastern League homer.  Anthony Alford tripled and walked in four plate trips.
Gerry - Thursday, July 02 2015 @ 10:02 PM EDT (#304232) #
With Urena promoted to Dunedin, Dawel Lugo has been sent down to Lansing. Maybe he can find his hitting stroke there?

"that imo is far more than what locastro and dejong are. i don't see how their value is even in that ballpark."

Well considering DeJong was 2nd rounder with a signing bonus of 620K and has improved this year and add in whatever finge prospect status Locastro has, I think the value is there. Let's put it this way, if it was AA was picking these guys up for $1 million and change, I think most here would applaud the move.

Basically the cost for drafting Vladdy Jr, was 2 prospects and losing out on a class of IFA.

Dejong's stock has fallen significantly since draft day. if he was in this year's draft, nobody would be using a 2nd rounder on him.

I certainly wouldn't be applauding spending $1.2m on two older prospects who wouldn't even crack our top 40. that would be silly.
bpoz - Friday, July 03 2015 @ 09:52 AM EDT (#304242) #
This trading of Intl pool money is interesting.
The LAD pool total was $2,020,300, They traded over half to the Jays, $1,071,300.

The D'Backs who have the biggest pool at $5.4 mil are a max penalty team. Their pool is basically useless to them. Hopefully for them they are allowed to trade pool money unless their penalization forbids it.
Mike Green - Friday, July 03 2015 @ 10:07 AM EDT (#304243) #
I have no idea what De Jong's current value is.  He was a  2nd round pick and hasn't been moving quickly. Nonetheless, he's only 21 and he struck out 10 batters in each of his last two starts in Lansing.  Maybe something has turned for him.
hypobole - Friday, July 03 2015 @ 10:28 AM EDT (#304245) #
One thing I haven't seen mentioned is that because we can't sign anyone for more than 300K next year, and there will be a lot of competition for these types, we will probably end up trading some of our pool money for someone else's prospect(s).
cruzin - Friday, July 03 2015 @ 11:10 AM EDT (#304260) #
"I certainly wouldn't be applauding spending $1.2m on two older prospects who wouldn't even crack our top 40. that would be silly."

I don't know about your top 40 list, but I DeJong would likely make mine though I admit once you get out of the top consensus 20, lists are likely to diverge. But as for being older, even though DeJong is repeating low A he's still younger than league avg.
