Third Star - Rafael Sanchez

Second Star - Cade Doughty

First Star - Devonte Brown

NOTES

Bowden Francis started for Buffalo but just went two innings, two scoreless innings. Trent Thornton followed and he was shelled, six runs while getting one out. Paxton Schultz threw five innings to save the bullpen. Hagen Danner pitched an inning. He had a rough start in Buffalo but has been pitching well. He had one bad appearance where he gave up three runs. But Since June 6th he has made 11 appearances and nine of them were scoreless. In those 11 appearances he has thrown 14 innings, ten hits, three walks and 14 K's. He is adapting well to AAA.

Jordan Luplow homered for the second game in a row.

Cade Doughty drove in the first two C's runs, one with a single and another with a home run, his tenth. Eugene scored two in the eighth to tie the game and another in the top of the ninth to take a 3-2 lead. In the bottom of the ninth the first two hitters walked bringing Devonte Brown to the plate. Brown went deep for a walk-off, three run, home run. Prior to that he had walked twice, maybe Eugene should have walked him again.

Rafael Sanchez went six shutout innings, two hits, but just three K's.

For Dunedin Irv Carter gave up seven runs but only two were earned due to errors behind him in the fourth and fifth innings. Carter has an odd delivery that makes it tougher to have good command. He looks like a future reliever to me. The Jays just had five hits.

Doughty now up to 256/340/439.

He is 306/370/514 in the last month (18 games).

His Ks are too high - 35% overall and have not improved over his recent hot streak. BB at 9% overall

Alan Roden is going to New Hampshire FC. He found out on the field right after Devonte Brown’s walk-off homer. He received lots of hugs and handshakes from his teammates and coaches.

Congratulations to Alan Roden. With 2 months left in the minor league season there should be about 200 ABs left this season and 9 starts for SPs. Hope to see more promotions.

Which players have shown the most isolated power in the Jays minors? Three C's in the top 7 for ISO. Devonte 7th .204, Spain 5th .219, Dejesus #4  .231. Orelvis #3 .259, Schneider #2 .262.

And the kid who's shown the most power? Yhoangel Aponte .267. And that's before he homered in his 1st PA today. Gotta cut back that 35% K rate though.

A finally, a serious question about yesterday's hero. How many more HR's does he have to hit before he can be given the nickname "Downtown"? Is there an unwritten baseball rule about that?
bpoz - Monday, July 17 2023 @ 01:32 PM EDT (#431881) #
Orelvis was 17 years old in the GCL 2019. Y Aponte is 19 years old. Gabby Martinez also 19 in the GCL 2021.

All 3 are good prospects but different strengths.

Either he’s trade bait or the Jays want to prep him for 2024 in the majors (maybe even 2023 if someone gets injured).
Marc Hulet - Monday, July 17 2023 @ 06:54 PM EDT (#431893) #
I'm guessing they're trying to showcase Orelvis... And AAA has been a very favorable hitting environment the last couple of years.

I predicted that there would be promotions coming up soon!!

I further predict that the promotions are not complete. I really hope I have not Jinxed it.
greenfrog - Monday, July 17 2023 @ 07:06 PM EDT (#431896) #
Orelvis should be a good trade chip, and maybe even their best one with Tiedemann and Barriera rehabbing. But isn’t he the Jays presumptive third baseman for 2024 and beyond? Or is the Jays’ goal to land another strong veteran now and worry about 2024 later?

Also, MLBTR says the Jays have “strong interest” in trading for Stroman. I would love to see Stroman back in Toronto, how plausible is that rumour?
uglyone - Monday, July 17 2023 @ 07:11 PM EDT (#431898) #
is AAA a better showcase for him than AA tho?

hypobole - Monday, July 17 2023 @ 07:22 PM EDT (#431899) #
I'm sure the Stroman  interest was when Manoah was sent down and Ryu was just starting his rehab. Just as I'm sure the Cubs leaked it to help drive up his price in a trade.

I can't see any way Orelvis improves enough defensively  to play 3rd with the Jays next year. Hope I'm wrong.
uglyone - Monday, July 17 2023 @ 07:28 PM EDT (#431900) #
they probably want Manoah for Stroman.
Leaside Cowboy - Monday, July 17 2023 @ 09:04 PM EDT (#431901) #
Manoah uses Stroman's old number 6, although Marcus now wears number 0 for the Cubs.

Zero is the absence of a number. Therefore, L-C declares that all players who wear "0" are fools.

mathesond - Monday, July 17 2023 @ 09:28 PM EDT (#431902) #
And all the players who wear "0" say that they are not numbers.
uglyone - Monday, July 17 2023 @ 09:31 PM EDT (#431903) #
Double Zero, though, is the best number ever, and in jays history too.
SK in NJ - Monday, July 17 2023 @ 09:54 PM EDT (#431904) #
I think it's more likely that Orelvis is a 2024 3B option than he is trade bait at this point. The Jays are already a luxury tax team and will need to fill 3B, 2B, LF, and DH next season. Eventually they are going to have to start incorporating prospects into big league positions, unless there's another Moreno/Varsho type of trade available where Orelvis can fetch a player with 3-4 years of control left at a position of need.

I'm pulling for Roden. Don't know much about him beyond his stats, but a LHH OF prospect on the Jays isn't a common thing, at least recently.

So is it a given that none of Merrifield, Chapman, Belt or Kiermaier will be resigned?

Rays and O’s lose. Division gets a bit tighter.
Nigel - Monday, July 17 2023 @ 10:33 PM EDT (#431909) #
I don’t know about all 4 of those players but Chapman has made clear that he and Boras are going to free agency - I see little prospect of the Jays entering that contest given their current and impending budget issues. KK and Varsho are really filling the same roster spot and while I think KK is the better player, age, injury history and cost likely make KK a goner. Merrifield has a club option for I think $18m for next year. They aren’t going to exercise that. I’m sure there are examples of clubs declining options and then resigning the player but that is very rare. So, I’d guess there’s a pretty good chance those three are not returning.
uglyone - Monday, July 17 2023 @ 11:25 PM EDT (#431913) #
That club option doesn't look bad to me tbh.

SK in NJ - Tuesday, July 18 2023 @ 01:04 AM EDT (#431917) #
I think Merrifield is the only 1 of the 4 that could realistically come back. I could see the Jays declining the option and still working out a multi year deal with him. I don't think he's going to command that much on the open market given his age, so if he enjoys playing here and is willing to come back on a lower AAV and more years, then I could see that happening. Chapman is definitely gone IMO, and bringing Kiermaier back would be a mistake given that Varsho really needs to be in CF to have maximum value on this team, and more offense from LF is a far more sensible hole to fix. Not sure about Belt. My guess is he will move on as well.

If Orelvis doesn't embarrass himself in AAA over the next 2+ months, then I think he's the starting 3B next season and they'll use the saved money to fix other holes. Would be nice if Barger ends the season off strongly so more options become available.

Stroman probably shares an affinity with another Number 6 who refused to accept that he was a number.

uglyone - Tuesday, July 18 2023 @ 10:13 AM EDT (#431927) #
They can't really be depending on Orelvis being a fulltime starting mlber next year. Going from toasty prospect repeating AA to projected MLB starter after half a good not great season is a huge stretch imo.

And all of the impending FA hitters make sense to re-sign, with only Chapman being a tricky decision.

If you assume modest arb raises and that the Jays decline their options/control on Merrifield, Garcia, and Cimber, they're looking at 175MM for the squad above. Knock off 4MM if they'd rather let Green walk.

uglyone - Tuesday, July 18 2023 @ 12:25 PM EDT (#431939) #
Given that Spotrac has them at $213m this year, your figures there would seem to leave them plenty of room to sign Chapman, or maybe sign all of Merrifield/Kiermaier/Belt instead.

hypobole - Tuesday, July 18 2023 @ 01:11 PM EDT (#431940) #
Atlanta just called up Forrest Wall. Leads AAA with 45 stolen bases, so I see some pinch-running there. Interestingly, the 2 players tied for 2nd in AAA stolen bases also have a strong Jays connection.  Samad Taylor, who's now up with the Royals and Bisons CF Cam Eden have 38.
Nigel - Tuesday, July 18 2023 @ 01:25 PM EDT (#431941) #
That position player group for ‘24 needs a lot more help than the pitching staff.
Mike Green - Tuesday, July 18 2023 @ 01:33 PM EDT (#431942) #
The team's position players currently have 15.9 fWAR.  About half of them (7.7) belong to Chapman, Keirmaier, Merrifield and Belt.  Perhaps Barger and Orelvis can share the third base job and be average.  Perhaps.  But they definitely need a left-fielder if they are not bringing back Keirmaier and Merrifield.  Perhaps Horwitz can replace Belt's production by spending more time at first base and allowing Guerrero Jr. to DH more.

$175M for that collection of players seems like a lot.
Cracka - Tuesday, July 18 2023 @ 02:52 PM EDT (#431944) #
Forrest Wall will be the 22nd prospect from the 2018 Fisher Cats to make it to the MLB -- and 15 of them are still playing (or have played) this season: Bichette, Vlad Jr., Biggio, Espinal, Romano on our squad, plus: Forrest Wall, Harold Ramirez, Jonathan Davis, Jon Berti, Gurriel Jr., Tayler Saucedo, Zach Jackson, Danny Young, and Thomas Pannone.

One of the greatest minor league teams in recent history and maybe ever in Blue Jays history.

SK in NJ - Tuesday, July 18 2023 @ 05:57 PM EDT (#431960) #
Garcia has a vesting option for 2024 based on appearances which he will almost certainly reach unless he gets hurt, so add on $6M to the 2024 projected payroll. There is definitely a payroll crunch unless they plan on being a tax team moving forward, which comes with penalties.

Orelvis at 3B is not ideal for a team with a two year window (2024-25 are the last two seasons of "cheap" control over Vlad + Bichette), but I really don't see how they can keep adding payroll at the rate they have been. At some point they are going to have to start incorporating prospects into the mix. Maybe it's not Orelvis and it's Barger or Schneider instead, but either way, they will probably need at least one of them (or a combination) to handle one of the open positions in 2024. The Jays got very lucky that the A's were tanking to leave Oakland so Chapman became available, but finding an arb eligible player with that upside again is going to be difficult.
greenfrog - Tuesday, July 18 2023 @ 06:02 PM EDT (#431961) #
Orelvis is still so young (21). A year or two from now, if he keeps working hard, he could be a really good player.
92-93 - Tuesday, July 18 2023 @ 06:25 PM EDT (#431962) #
Thanks for pointing that out, SK.

Garcia has been excellent the last 6 weeks, but perhaps they should take advantage of that and move him for a prospect that helps them acquire a position player at the deadline. Especially if the club values White in any way, because Ryu and Green's returns will make keeping him tricky, barring injury.
uglyone - Tuesday, July 18 2023 @ 06:34 PM EDT (#431964) #
I don't know the tax implications but I don't know why we'd drop from our current $215 (per spotrac) down to $175 next year.

there's like $65m coming off the books at the end of the season.

Orelvis also has the Herd's only K. Davis Scneider homered and has reached base in all 3 PAs. He's playing left field tonight.
