NOTES

At the end of last season I discussed how the information environment around minor league baseball had changed since we started writing these. As we now have more real time data and video the MLU is often old news by the time it gets published. So for 2025 I am not necessarily going to write "how the game was won or lost". Rather I will make some comments of things I noted in that nights games. I might mention all teams or I might just mention one. We will see how it goes.

Several of the Jays top 30 prospects were assigned to Buffalo to start the season. When you combine them with the usual mix of veterans, hopes were high for a good season. It hasn't worked out that way. Buffalo lost two games on Friday and are now 1-5.

The hottest hitter in the lineup has been Jonatan Clase. He was 3-4 in game one and had a pinch hit single in game two. He is hitting .474 with a 1.091 OPS.

Orelvis Martinez was sick to start the season and he hasn't found his form yet. He had one hit and one walk between the two games but struck out four times.

New Hampshire had to wait until the sixth inning for their first hit, they finished with three hits and struck out 12 times.

CJ Van Eyk is back to starting. He was charged with two runs in 4.2 innings, but it was more of the same, he walked two hitters and they scored the two runs when the next hitter doubled. The lack of command is why it seems that Van Eyk is destined to be a reliever. It could be that the high number of pitching injuries has forced Van Eyk into a starting role.

Ryan Jennings went two innings. A hit batter was the only base runner. He struck out four.

Vancouver's bullpen could'nt hold a 4-1 lead in the sixth inning. Arjun Nimmala was 0-3 with a walk.

Khal Stephen made his pro debut (ignoring the prospects game in spring). He threw five shutout innings, two hits, one walk and six K's. That's about as good as you could expect. He threw 69 pitches, 46 strikes and 23 balls. Stephen had 14 whiffs (swings and misses). Nine of those were with his four seam fastball. Per statcast he used six pitches. A 4 seam fastball, sinker, cutter, a curveball, changeup and a slider. His fastball averaged 93.6 mph. His debut was about as good as you would hope for.

Sam Shaw, from Victoria, didn't have a good year in 2024 but remained on some top 30 lists. He homered in his first game of 2025, a 105 MPH shot, and finished 2-3. Shaw looks to reestablish himself as a prospect.

The Jays took Tucker Toman off the field last summer to rework his swing. When he returned close to the end of the season the change didn't work and his performance was no better. Now he has had an off season to work on it more and he is facing his presumably last chance to stay in the system. He was 1-4 on Friday.

These results remind me of 2024... the farm really needs a good year but I can't remember the last time I was this apathetic towards the collective group of minor league bats.

There are some interesting diamonds-in-the-rough on the pitching side at the lowest level.

The system has a lot to prove this season:
(1) International prospects taking the next step. Players like Bonilla and Beltre especially, given their high bonuses.
(2) High Pick HS kids taking a next step. I'm particularly keeping an eye on Landen Maroudis, Tucker Toman and Brandon Barriera.
(3) Putting injuries in the past and staying healthy this season, regaining some prospect shine (Ricky Tiedemann and Brandon Barriera).
(4) Recent HS picks showing promise (Johnny King and Carson Messina).

If three to four of these players can show development and promise, and take that next step, then this will be a successful minor league season. I'm expecting Arjun Nimmala to continue to develop (not expecting big HR totals from this season given that he's starting in Vancouver) and Trey Yesavage to move quickly through the system, as that was what we were sold on.

Needless to say, it will be an interesting minor league season. Always looking forward to these minor league write ups. It's much appreciated and always read, even though I don't post too often.

Love this format, Gerry!

Maroudis and Tiedemann likely won't be pitching this year... It's possible Maroudis gets a few games in August. Barriera should get into some game action in July/August but it'll be mostly in the lower levels to build back up.

Pretty much 2025 is a write off for moat of the 2024 TJ guys.

Sam Shaw was interviewed by Manuel Beltre for the D Jays. Beltre asked Shaw about how we went about adding weight in the off-season. Eating hot dogs and donuts was Shaw's answer.

Nimmala had 3 hits today and has not struck out so far in Vancouver's first two games. They were all singles but he needed to cut down on his strike outs and make more contact and he is doing just that. Gotta love that, but on the negative side he did have a throwing error in todays game.

Sounds like Shaw is on that Gausman diet, Gerry.

Good night for the farm. Excellent debut for Wentworth. We don't get statcast data for High A, but he had 22 swings and misses. Guerra and Batista with 4 shutout innings each. Guerra averaging 93.6 MPH with the heater, primarily 4-seamer and slider combo. Batista averaging 91.5, four pitch mix. Flamethrower Colby Martin touched 98.5.

3 hits for Beltre (I'll always pull for such a likeable guy). Toman had the highest EV in the game (104.3).

Looks like Gallagher and Miranda are relievers now.

Doughty officially on the 7-day IL. Gabby Martinez, Hornung, Gilliland all on the development list.

Some great starts early by some pitchers. Stephen, Rogers, Wentworth, Guerra, all solid starts. Pitching depth seems way ahead of hitting though which makes sense based on how many more draft picks have been used on pitchers recently (3/4 top picks in both 2023 and 2024 were pitchers).
