NOTES

Easton Lucas gave up three runs in 3.2 innings. Not his best work. On the bright side he struck out five.

Damiano Palmegiani, who had been on the development list, drove in both Buffalo runs. He and Alan Roden had two hits each.

Devereaux Harrison went six innings for NH, three hits allowed, two of which were home runs. He struck out five.

Dasan Brown hit his first home run of the season, Yohendrick Pinango hit his fourth. Pinango is hitting .340 while Brown is down at .217.

Juaron Watts Brown threw a two hitter over six innings, he struck out ten. Unfortunately the bullpen couldn't hold a lead.

Arjun Nimmala and Nick Goodwin each had two hits.

Adam Kloffenstein pitched four innings for Dunedin as he continues his rehab. He has to be close to coming back to Buffalo. Austin Cates, who has been starting, pitched the last three innings. He pitched well, two hits, four K's.

Jean Joseph hit his fourth home run, a solo shot, and singled. Manuel Beltre singled and tripled.

Pardino closed with a clean inning for Buffalo. Anybody know about his stuff? Previous outing was not so good. He’s not on the roster.

4-Seam/Slider/Splitter, though he throws the splitter more than anything. Fastball sits at 92. Not overpowering, seems to have had some bad luck this year and is sporting a 2.82 FIP.
Marc Hulet - Monday, May 12 2025 @ 07:28 AM EDT (#459871) #
Yeah, Pardinho has been mostly 91-92 mph, down from 93-95 last year. The splitter has been his best pitch.

The Jays need to find a way to start moving up some relievers. Each level has a couple of interesting guys that probably need a new challenge but the lack of lower level depth makes it tough.

Jean Joseph has shown up with some new-found power to replace the pop that was lost when Yeuni Munoz went on the DL. Joseph has been playing CF and RF while throwing out a couple runners so he has more defensive value than Munoz. The down side is that Joseph has a 0-15 BB-K ratio which isn't going to play.

This past week we have had some incredible SP performances. Van Eyk complete game. Watts-Brown in Vancouver. G Batista in Dunedin.

latest BA Mock Draft
8. Blue Jays — Kade Anderson, LHP, LSU Range: 8-16
9. Reds — Jace LaViolette, OF, Texas A&M Range: 7-9
Kelekin - Monday, May 12 2025 @ 02:11 PM EDT (#459874) #
Agreed Marc. It's weird because they used to have no issue moving those relievers up quickly, but currently a lot of relievers are struggling in the low minors.

I'd like to see Dominguez and Jennings in AAA soon, Gallagher and Yeager to AA, Coleman and Martin to A+.

JWB is up to a 15 K/9. But more importantly, a 2.8 BB/9. Curious to know if he's improved his stuff, or just beating up on competition he's now too good for.
Marc Hulet - Monday, May 12 2025 @ 02:16 PM EDT (#459875) #
It's a pretty weak draft up top, which kinda sucks. If Arquette, Willits, Holliday or Arnold don't fall into their laps, I'd look to cut a deal with a lower first round talent and spread the cash around to get a second player since they're also missing their 2nd round pick.

They could also really use some hitters in the system. And catchers - pretty much everyone they've draft over the past 2-3 years can't actually catch.
Kelekin - Monday, May 12 2025 @ 02:47 PM EDT (#459876) #
I feel the same. LaViolette is probably still my pick there, because despite the concerns, I rather us take a shot on a high ceiling. But there's no clear great pick at that spot.

I'm glad the Jays didn't go for a catcher early last year, they all had huge red flags and that's bearing out with their performances so far in 2025.
Glevin - Monday, May 12 2025 @ 04:32 PM EDT (#459878) #
I really don't know enough about draft prospects to make that call. I mean Laviolette has horrible swing and miss. Is that fixable or will he just fail as a prospect? Jays definitely need hitters though. They have excellent pitching low in the minors and aside from Nimmala, basically no hitters. If Jays do cut a deal, I hope it's with someone like Neyens, Josh Hammond, etc... Someone with real power. Jays need to be trying to get major league starting players who can hit in top half of lineup. If they stay, kind of in the same area of prospect, I'd expect one of the high school SS or college pitchers. Billy Carlson might be the most interesting guy in that group to me.
John Northey - Tuesday, May 13 2025 @ 01:30 AM EDT (#459882) #
It is always interesting to see how a prospect handles going down. Roden is now hitting 526/550/842 over 4 games. Clearly he saw it as a challenge. Wagner in 8 games 267/267/467. Meh. Schneider 192/322/329 in 21 games. Ugh. Loperfido (0 ML time in 2025) 254/333/410. meh. In 31 games Orelvis Martinez (0 ML time this year) 192/282/356 (last 10 278/366/500 so is coming to life). Leo Jimenez is the only other hitter on the 40 man not in the majors and hasn't played in 2025 due to injuries.

Right now I can't see Schneider getting another shot unless he drastically turns his season around. Loperfido and Wager both have shown some hope but need to show a LOT more. Martinez is on his way, but won't be up soon unless a few injuries happen. Roden will get another shot soon if he keeps this up, but where? Straw still has a 96 OPS+, Lukes a 127, Barger up to 102. So where would you play Roden?

Btw, by bWAR Barger is already #10 at 0.5, Springer leads at 1.1. Bassitt #1 for pitchers at 0.8, Berrios at 0.7 is the only other one higher than Barger. Similar for fWAR with Barger also at 0.5, 6 hitters higher and 2 pitchers (Gausman & Bassitt). Springer is also #1 at 1.1 but at 0.8 is Kirk & Heinemann (tied).

If Barger can keep this up we might have our 3B for the next few years. Thus Clement can go back to a backup role (with is 76 wRC+) once Gimenez comes back (positive WAR both BR and FG despite a 68 wRC+).

Next challenges are Santander (showing signs of hope) and keeping Kirk healthy.

Rotation isn't 'wow' but seems acceptable with Gausman-Bassitt-Berrios, Francis showing signs of coming out of his funk, with Urena OK as a backup 5 hole guys so far with Lauer doing OK as a next guy out. At least until one of Schertzer, Manoah, or (likely fist to be set) Spencer Turnbull are ready.

I see the pen as acceptable now as things shake out - Hoffman closing, Garcia/Green backup closers/8th inning, Little/Fluharty as LH guys, Rodriguez as jack-of-all-trades, Fisher/Lauer as 'break in case of blowout'. Hopefully Sandlin won't be too long, Swanson I'm not holding hope out for, and Burr is a depth piece for the 7/8 slots. Easton Lucas showed some hope for 10 minutes, and might get another shot but hopefully not as that means someone else is flopping bad.

So what would I try to improve? The 5 hole in the rotation is a danger still, you can never have enough pen depth, I wouldn't worry about 3B for now, and let Lukes/Straw share LF with Clase getting a bit of time now and then (Straw in CF, Clase LF vs LHP to give Varsho a day off). It'll be an interesting summer that is for sure.

There's a flipside to that tho.

Schneider has already demolished AAA before. There's no reason he shouldn't be able demolish it again even if he's got a fatal flaw that stops him from hitting in mlb.

So this might indicate that he's completely messed up the approach that made him good in the first place, and that it might not just be mlb pitching that's causing the problem - i.e. that there's something that he can legit fix and get back to what he was doing in AAA back then and maybe possibly mlb again too.
lexomatic - Tuesday, May 13 2025 @ 07:02 AM EDT (#459884) #
Re Schneider approach, it"s possible also that he got Biggio'd by inconsistent MLB strike zone compared to AAA.
Marc Hulet - Tuesday, May 13 2025 @ 08:09 AM EDT (#459886) #
LaViolette scares me. You don't see a lot of college guys succeed in pro ball with that kind of swing and miss. Now he is fairly athletic, which helps.

I also don't really trust the Jays development staff to fix someone like this... he's a better project for a team with a deep system that can afford a big swing-and-miss or has a history with this type of big player (6-foot-6) like the Yankees.

NH rained out today. That is ten rainouts for NH so far this season. I don't live in the Boston area but that seems like a lot of rain.
Mike Green - Tuesday, May 13 2025 @ 12:43 PM EDT (#459891) #
It is a lot of rain. NH has played 32 games. A rainout every 4 games is a lot, and will interrupt flow of development (so to speak).

Dunedin has been the best team in the FSL by a fair piece. They lead the league in runs scored and have also allowed the fewest runs in both cases by significant margins. Some observations for the position players:

Edward Duran has hit quite a bit better. He's a 21 year old catcher who plays good defence. He's Rule 5 eligible in December and I imagine that the club won't advance him too quickly.

Manuel Beltre turns 21 in June. He has been very good with the bat, evening out his walk/K and hitting with some pop. He's Rule 5 eligible in December.

Sam Shaw turned 20 in February. He's hitting line drives (29%) and fly-balls with authority (21% Hr/Fb). If he cuts his K rate a little bit, he's going to be a good prospect in a year.

Among Dunedin's pitchers, the exploits of Yeasavage and Stephen are well-known. Gilberto Batista is just 20 and he's been very good since arriving from Boston late last year, with 7 walks and 44 strikeouts in 48 innings and a good ERA. He has given up 6 homers however.

As was suspected its TJ surgery for Jake Bloss. The Jays surgeon should send a rebate back to the Jays.
Kelekin - Tuesday, May 13 2025 @ 04:47 PM EDT (#459904) #
Expected but unfortunate. I still don't think it has anything to do with the Jays. It's felt like a lot lately, but it's the same across all of MLB.

Hopefully he comes back stronger.

Hitting prospects stats update...

AAA

Excellers:

* OF Roden (25): 20pa, 5.0b%, 15.0k%, .600bip, .526avg, .316iso, 278wrc+
* IF Stefanic (29): 119pa, 15.1b%, 11.8k%, .370bip, .319avg, .053iso, 144wrc+
* OF Robertson (27): 95pa, 14.7b%, 22.1k%, .357bip, .288avg, .188iso, 141wrc+
* C Sanchez (28): 76pa, 9.2b%, 26.3k%, .326bip, .284avg, .239iso, 137wrc+
* 1B Tirotta (26): 90pa, 12.2b%, 35.6k%, .395bip, .266avg, .228iso, 132wrc+
* CF Clase (23): 106pa, 13.2b%, 23.6k%, .438bip, .315avg, .056iso, 130wrc+

Nice to see Roden hit the ground running. Hopefully he's back up soon. Stefanic is deservedly up and is a useful depth piece in general. Don't think there's anything to get excited about with Robertson and Tirotta, but Sanchez is showing some potential usefulness. Have to be happy with Clase's start even with the high babip, but hopefully enough mlbers keep hitting so we can get Clase some more AAA time to develop.

Pretty meh:

* OF Loperfido (26): 139pa, 9.4b%, 25.9k%, .325bip, .254avg, .156iso, 104wrc+
* UT Barger (25): 45pa, 11.1b%, 28.9k%, .250bip, .211avg, .211iso, 99wrc+
* IF Rivera (24): 45pa, 20.0b%, 24.4k%, .280bip, .194avg, .111iso, 96wrc+
* IF Wagner (26): 30pa, 0.0b%, 13.3%, .250bip, .267avg, .200iso, 95wrc+
* UT Schneider (26): 87pa, 16.1b%, 36.8k%, .325bip, .192avg, .137iso, 86wrc+

Passable but not very interesting from this group. But as Barger is showing in the bigs right now that doesn't mean there's no potential here.

Strugglers:

* IF Martinez (23): 117pa, 10.3b%, 31.6k%, .266bip, .192avg, .163iso, 77wrc+
* 1B Nunez (24): 85pa, 10.6b%, 30.6k%, .283bip, .205avg, .110iso, 77wrc+
* 1B Palmegiani (25): 62pa, 16.1b%, 24.2k%, .206bip, .143avg, .041iso, 63wrc+
* C Bethancourt (33): 67pa, 6.0b%, 20.9k%, .114bip, .150avg, .233iso, 49wrc+
* CF Berroa (26): 86pa, 9.3b%, 27.9k%, .278bip, .195avg, .039iso, 44wrc+
* IF Turconi (26): 28pa, 14.3b%, 28.6k%, .188bip, .130avg, .043iso, 28wrc+

Orelvis and Nunez showing signs of life after horrendous starts but still nowhere near good enough. The others are all afterthoughts.

AA

Age-Appropriate:

* IF Paulino (22): 54pa, 5.6b%, 40.7k%, .385bip, .224avg, .122iso, 90wrc+
* OF Martinez (22): 41pa, 17.1b%, 14.6k%, .222bip, .182avg, .030iso, 73wrc+
* IF Harry (22): 47pa, 8.5b%, 27.7k%, .300bip, .209avg, .023iso, 55wrc+

Nothing to like here so far.

Slightly Old for Level:

* OF Pinango (23): 121pa, 12.4b%, 22.3k%, .431bip, .340avg, .204iso, 185wrc+
* OF Bohrofen (23): 116pa, 9.5b%, 33.6k%, .279bip, .210avg, .190iso, 99wrc+
* OF Brown (23): 54pa, 11.1b%, 31.5k%, .321bip, .217avg, .109iso, 89wrc+
* IF Dejesus (23): 53pa, 3.8b%, 43.4k%, .429bip, .235avg, .098iso, 72wrc+
* IF McAdoo (23): 114pa, 8.8b%, 38.6k%, .322bip, .192avg, .077iso, 59wrc+
* C Sharp (23): 53pa, 0.0b%, 32.1k%, .265bip, .176avg, .000iso, 14wrc+

Paulino the lone standout here, with a line that's great even considering the superhigh babip. Nothing else going on here tho, with McAdoo being a big fail for me personally.

Old for Level:

* OF Schreck (24): 82pa, 12.2b%, 28.0k%, .317bip, .250avg, .265iso, 159wrc+
* UT Doughty (24): 25pa, 8.0b%, 20.0k%, .444bip, .348avg, .087iso, 145wrc+
* 1B Williams (24): 112pa, 9.8b%, 33.0k%, .246bip, .173avg, .102iso, 57wrc+
* IF Rivera (24): 46pa, 6.5b%, 52.2k%, .333bip, .163avg, .093iso, 39wrc+

Schreck crushing it after a terrible start. They could promote him at any time. Nothing else here of note here so far.

A+

Young for Level:

* IF Nimmala (19): 132pa, 8.3b%, 20.5k%, .306bip, .280avg, .254iso, 135wrc+

Great line, but it looks like he's at the right level at this point. Still things to improve on before forcing a promotion.

Age Appropriate:

* OF Arias (21): 119pa, 11.8b%, 21.0k%, .372bip, .288avg, .106iso, 117wrc+
* IF Coffey (21): 113pa, 9.7b%, 27.4k%, .318bip, .242avg, .152iso, 96wrc+

Nice line for Arias but not overwhelming. Need to see some more power from him tbh. Coffey holding his own, but with contact issues.

Slightly Old for Level:

* IF Pinto (22): 85pa, 9.4b%, 16.5k%, .264bip, .284avg, .324iso, 162wrc+
* IF Harry (22): 52pa, 9.6b%, 19.2k%, .314bip, .277avg, .213iso, 125wrc+
* C Parker (22): 92pa, 10.9b%, 20.7k%, .293bip, .253avg, .215iso, 121wrc+
* 3B Keys (22): 119pa, 13.4b%, 21.0k%, .261bip, .224avg, .194iso, 116wrc+

Pinto still killing it, and could be promoted whenever. The other three all ok for their age but need to show more to get legit interesting.

A

Age Appropriate:

* OF Shaw (20): 84pa, 20.2b%, 22.6k%, .262bip, .231avg, .215iso, 146wrc+
* OF Joseph (20): 59pa, 0.0b%, 25.4k%, .263bip, .246avg, .281iso, 117wrc+
* UT Chirinos (20): 87pa, 12.6b%, 28.7k%, .354bip, .250avg, .139iso, 114wrc+

Nice group right here, with Shaw being the standout. Nothing screaming promotion yet but not far off either.

Slightly Old for Level:

* OF Munoz (21): 71pa, 9.9b%, 29.6k%, .417bip, .323avg, .323iso, 188wrc+
* IF Beltre (21): 133pa, 12.8b%, 12.8k%, .344bip, .304avg, .122iso, 138wrc+
* C Duran (21): 112pa, 10.7b%, 22.3k%, .333bip, .271avg, .146iso, 124wrc+
* OF Aponte (21): 106pa, 8.5b%, 31.1k%, .339bip, .234avg, .149iso, 102wrc+
* IF Toman (21): 103pa, 10.7b%, 26.2k%, .317bip, .230avg, .103iso, 99wrc+

Very nice lines from the first 3 and could be promoted at any time imo. Not good enough lines to get crazy excited about but all 3 legit interesting. Aponte and Toman holding their own but that's not good enough at their age i don't think.

My current 5 favorite hitting lines here:

* 1. Roden
* 2. Nimmala
* 3. Clase
* 4. Shaw
* 5. Arias
