welp, i guess it's time for the bats to show up.

Hope the Corbin experience does not last long.
Looks like the Carratini AB had a blown call walk with that 1st pitch blown & not challenged. *sigh*

Happy to see Schenider in starting lineup against RHP. Hopefully he gets hot and stays in there. Can't believe Vladdy challenged in first again. Yes, it was close. No, it wasn't important enough to challenge. Come on man!
Gerry - Friday, April 10 2026 @ 07:30 PM EDT (#476582) #
When you see Vladdy asking the team to check every close play on the bases you have to wonder about his judgement. Then when he blows an ABS call in the first inning, maybe he shouldn't be allowed to check pitches.
92-93 - Friday, April 10 2026 @ 07:40 PM EDT (#476584) #
It's an incredibly poor reflection on the manager that Vladdy's baserunning and ABS gaffes continue.
Eephus - Friday, April 10 2026 @ 08:14 PM EDT (#476585) #
Corbin to my eyes hasn’t actually looked totally awful or anything. He’s made some really good pitches… but man the occasional one he leaves over too much of the plate you’re pretty much covering your eyes and hoping for the best. Can’t get away with too many of those.
uglyone - Friday, April 10 2026 @ 08:23 PM EDT (#476586) #
hello, bats, nice to see you again.
Eephus - Friday, April 10 2026 @ 08:41 PM EDT (#476587) #
Best inning in a while. Certainly not a cheapie for the rookie backstop either.

Defence still not looking tight though. Almost like they’re a bit jumpy out there, trying a little too fast squeezing the glove a little early etc.

Eephus - Friday, April 10 2026 @ 08:53 PM EDT (#476589) #
You could say he’s… Mantiplying the strikeouts in this appearance.
uglyone - Friday, April 10 2026 @ 08:59 PM EDT (#476590) #
Schneider should be batting #2 i think.
Glevin - Friday, April 10 2026 @ 09:03 PM EDT (#476591) #
Jays probably don't want three righties in a row but I really hope this gets Schenider some more starts.
greenfrog - Friday, April 10 2026 @ 09:07 PM EDT (#476592) #
Turning a 0-4 deficit into a 8-4 lead is impressive, especially with Kirk sidelined. Good to see.

Agreed about Davis being a better choice to bat second. I don’t think Varsho fits well in that role (his career OBP is .295).
Gerry - Friday, April 10 2026 @ 09:08 PM EDT (#476593) #
Gimenez has been hitting well so making him bunt in front of Valenzuela seems not to be ideal.
uglyone - Friday, April 10 2026 @ 09:09 PM EDT (#476594) #
springer and schneider hit righties better than lefties tho.

and they have 3 righties in a row in the lineup tonight anyways!
greenfrog - Friday, April 10 2026 @ 09:40 PM EDT (#476595) #
Against RHP career:

Davis 113 wRC+ .329 OBP

Varsho 100 wRC+ .290 OBP

Jankees lose 5-3 to the Rays, Blue Jays 2 GB in the division.

Way too early to worry about the standings.
First, they need to get back to .500.

I guess they don't have to DFA Corbin just yet.

I like Venenzuela. He looks solid behind the plate.

It's Joe Ryan tomorrow. I don't see a lefty starter anytime soon.
Lukes probably gets in there tomorrow or Sunday.
Maybe Fitzgerald too eventually.

Lauer starts tomorrow, so all the Twins left bats will be aching to play Sunday.
It might not look like the usual Sunday game with all the bench players starting.
greenfrog - Friday, April 10 2026 @ 10:26 PM EDT (#476598) #
The Red Sox are losing to St. Louis in a close game. They’ll be 4-9 and 4 GB if the score holds.
TamRa - Saturday, April 11 2026 @ 01:28 AM EDT (#476600) #
"good problem" and "these things work themselves out" but assuming no near-future injuries/setbacks

Yesavage is on track to start on the 21st, Corbin thus has space for one more start and then there's a roster decision to make, potentially between Corbin and Mantiply (whom I assume can opt for free agency like Voth/Felming)

Berrios would track to be ready as early as late April (assumes 3 rehab starts) which would presumably push Lauer into the bullpen which would get whomever survived the previous choice.

We still don't have a time frame on Garcia but should he return to a healthy group, the next cut will hurt. Demote Fluharty in order to not lose anyone, or lose one of Nance or Miles.
GabrielSyme - Saturday, April 11 2026 @ 01:41 AM EDT (#476601) #
Not a great start for Corbin obviously, but a fair number of positives - decent control and velocity for a guy with an abbreviated ramp up, and he got a fair number of whiffs. He gave up way too many fly balls today, so that's something to be concerned about.
scottt - Saturday, April 11 2026 @ 03:39 AM EDT (#476602) #
The Yankees haven't been hitting either except Stanton and Rosario. It's April.

They went with a 4 man rotation. Yesterday they started Gil for the first time. Fried and Schlitter have been nails. Wheathers and Warren have been very good.
Glevin - Saturday, April 11 2026 @ 08:41 AM EDT (#476603) #
Against RHP career:

Davis 113 wRC+ .329 OBP

Varsho 100 wRC+ .290 OBP"

I like Schneider and hope Jays give him some run but his vs RHP has been extremely selective and he's been generally held out against the better right handed pitchers because he has trouble with velocity. He played against SWR yesterday largely because he throws 93 and not 96. Varsho plays everyday. Not all numbers can be easily extrapolated.
SK in NJ - Saturday, April 11 2026 @ 09:54 AM EDT (#476604) #
Davis Schneider also hit 2 home runs off RH position players in 2025 (I think both were RH), so that has to be factored into his numbers as well. I think Davis should play more, but I'm fine with them being selective with the RHP he faces. He should not be a strict platoon player, though. Hopefully with Lukes falling back down to earth, and Barger's injury, they find a way to get Davis more plate appearances.
greenfrog - Saturday, April 11 2026 @ 10:27 AM EDT (#476605) #
I’m not saying Davis should be the full-time #2 hitter. But maybe he can be usefully deployed a bit more often in that role. And Varsho’s .290 OBP in his career vRHP suggests that he should not be a #2 hitter.
Glevin - Saturday, April 11 2026 @ 12:02 PM EDT (#476606) #
Varsho less than ideal #2 but issue is Jays don't have anyone who fits well there or cleanup either.
Nigel - Saturday, April 11 2026 @ 12:23 PM EDT (#476607) #
Varsho has a career .290 OBP against RHP (career .296 overall). There really isn’t a case for Varsho hitting 2nd. The team really doesn’t have a good option for hitting 2nd if they are rigid in the R/L/R alignment. Gimenez is probably the best option right now.
uglyone - Saturday, April 11 2026 @ 12:26 PM EDT (#476608) #
I don’t think there was much selection in the RHP Schneider faced prior to last year.

Career vs 4 seamer (avg velo in brackets)

Springer (92.1): 20461pc, 320wrc+
Okamoto (95.7): 65pc, 191wrc+
Guerrero (94.4): 4638pc, 178wrc+
Kirk (94.3): 2623pc, 146wrc+
Sanchez (94.3): 3021pc, 136wrc+
Lukes (94.6): 891pc, 128wrc+
Gimenez (93.8): 3444pc, 120wrc+
Varsho (94.3): 3281pc, 114wrc+
Schneider (94.0): 1226pc, 114wrc+
Heineman (93.7): 663pc, 107wrc+
Straw (93.5): 3711pc, 106wrc+
Clement (94.1): 2396pc, 97wrc+
Barger (94.4): 942pc, 92wrc+

Schneider vs FA by year

2023 (94.0): 167pc, 220wrc+
2024 (94.1): 682pc, 65wrc+
2025 (93.9): 332pc, 148wrc+
2026 (93.6): 45pc, 198wrc+

And exactly how well does Schneider have to hit in "sheltered" usage before you start unsheltering him a bit?
uglyone - Saturday, April 11 2026 @ 12:34 PM EDT (#476609) #
The only jays with a better career wrc+ vRHP than Schneider (114) are Vladdy (138) and Springer (128).

In terms of OBP it's only those 2 (.364, .347) plus Kirk (.345) who beat him (.329).
greenfrog - Saturday, April 11 2026 @ 12:58 PM EDT (#476610) #
Another point in favour of using Schneider as the #2 hitter more often is the ABS system. Davis has a good batting eye and may be able to take advantage of the system, resulting in fewer unfair calls against him and in a somewhat improved OBP compared to his previous seasons.
Nigel - Saturday, April 11 2026 @ 01:13 PM EDT (#476611) #
With Barger out, leaving aside place in the batting order, in terms of sheer playing time the daily choice vs a RHP is primarily Schneider v Lukes. Once Barger is back, it’s a more complicated daily choice but more and more you can make a case that it’s Schneider v Okamato v Lukes.
uglyone - Saturday, April 11 2026 @ 01:46 PM EDT (#476612) #
Yeah and the ABS should make him more confident laying off the high fastballs because I'm pretty sure he's victimized by high calls more than most.
uglyone - Saturday, April 11 2026 @ 01:50 PM EDT (#476613) #
Nigel i don't think it should be Schneider vs lukes because unlike sanchez and lukes and Gimenez there's no need to platoon schneider.

Schneider should be given a real chance to play everyday because while he won't continue being the 135wrc+ guy he's been this year and last the chances are pretty good he can be a 110+ guy in fulltime duty. And maybe more.
Nigel - Saturday, April 11 2026 @ 02:37 PM EDT (#476614) #
uo - I’ve understood your position and the reasons for it:). I’m generally in alignment with that. My point was merely to lay out what Schneider’s daily choices really are. Barger’s return will be interesting. It’s been my view for a while that Okamoto was going to have to hit quite a bit to make up for his defense. I remain fairly optimistic about the chances of that (and he needs a good run to let him adjust to MLB pitching) but he is going to have to start hitting.
uglyone - Saturday, April 11 2026 @ 03:09 PM EDT (#476615) #
Let's see how Schneider does at 2B today.

An SS Gimenez - 2B Schneider middle IF is still most likely a defensive upgrade over last year's SS Bichette - 2B Gimenez middle infield.

Love how sportsnet  online radio has crapped out since the Jays scored their first run yesterday and I can't listen to the game today. For a team owned by a media company with a dedicated channel, they have a remarkably dysfunctional broadcast. .
Nigel - Saturday, April 11 2026 @ 03:21 PM EDT (#476617) #
There was a BB that Varsho took in his last AB 3 games ago and you felt this coming.
uglyone - Saturday, April 11 2026 @ 03:23 PM EDT (#476618) #
and just like that, Varsho's up to a 117wrc+ in his first 50pa this year. Even though it includes only moderate babip and power so far.

Terrible read by Varsho on that pop up by Bell.
SK in NJ - Saturday, April 11 2026 @ 03:58 PM EDT (#476620) #
Varsho catches that ball and the inning is over at 2-2 (or maybe 3-2 since his arm is shot but that was very shallow). Instead it's now 7-2 and Lauer is beginning to see what regression looks like.

I've been listening to the radio broadcast through the TuneIn app since the start of last season and haven't noticed any issues, other that the broadcast lagging behind Yahoo's fantasy baseball updates.

Varsho is either in a defensive slump or he’s lost a bit on that side of things so far this season.

Fractured big toe after fouling off a ball - he's likely to miss several weeks. Maybe Eloy Jiminez gets a shot.
greenfrog - Saturday, April 11 2026 @ 04:55 PM EDT (#476630) #
Thanks. That is unfortunate for Springer and the team.
Katie - Saturday, April 11 2026 @ 05:33 PM EDT (#476631) #
I'm not 100% sure of the timeline for Springer's toe, but if it's several weeks, I think this will be Jimenez's opportunity.

It's a long enough absence, as compared to Barger's potential 10 day stint, that it's worth the risk of exposing him to waivers when Springer returns (and that assumes that Jimenez doesn't force himself onto the roster or, more likely, there's another injury).
uglyone - Saturday, April 11 2026 @ 05:36 PM EDT (#476632) #
i don't know that eloy has actually earned an opportunity unfortunately.
Glevin - Saturday, April 11 2026 @ 05:44 PM EDT (#476633) #
Jays could have won that game. Varsho pays decent D or Jays get a couple of timely hits (why are you putting Straw at DH???) and game is different. Jimenez has a 115 WRC+ in AAA. Meh. Jays might be better off rotating some guys through the position.
Gerry - Saturday, April 11 2026 @ 05:46 PM EDT (#476634) #
Eloy started well in AAA but his last hit was on April 5th. Pinango started slowly but has hit better recently.
Katie - Saturday, April 11 2026 @ 06:02 PM EDT (#476636) #
I didn't realize Eloy had struggled so much recently.

He did draw two walks today, but Pinango was 1-for-2 with three walks and is hitting over .850.
Dr B - Saturday, April 11 2026 @ 08:12 PM EDT (#476637) #
Pinango is a tantalising prospect. A  couple of lines from Fangraphs on Pinango:

He lights up the spreadsheet, where his 80% contact rate and 50% hard-hit rate are among the very best in the system, and come with manageable chase rates.
,,,
Pinango can be lured off balance and his swing path isn’t geared for loft, both of which have limited his ability to homer throughout his career.

https://blogs.fangraphs.com/toronto-blue-jays-top-40-prospects-2/

Yet he was exposed to the Rule 5 draft and nobody took him.
Gerry - Saturday, April 11 2026 @ 08:51 PM EDT (#476638) #
Pinango's fielding is way below average, DH is his position.
scottt - Saturday, April 11 2026 @ 09:49 PM EDT (#476639) #
Pinango has a lazy stance in which in which he completes his load up as he swings. Maybe he can hit high velo but I'd like to see it.
scottt - Saturday, April 11 2026 @ 10:15 PM EDT (#476640) #
5 walks isn't regression, it's a lack of control.
scottt - Saturday, April 11 2026 @ 10:20 PM EDT (#476641) #
Does Miles pitching almost 4 innings mean that they don't expect Scherzer to go deep?
Michael - Saturday, April 11 2026 @ 11:40 PM EDT (#476642) #
I think it is smart, since you may hope he can go a regular amount, but after the last start and tendonitis it makes sense to be careful.

Also Miles pitching all those innings is a great usage and great result for a rules 5 guy.
TamRa - Sunday, April 12 2026 @ 12:12 AM EDT (#476643) #
I have but one firm opinion about the potential derivatives from any time Springer misses:

PLAY DAVIS SCHNEIDER EVERY DAY until he forces you not to. There's a lot of different ways you can manipulate the lineup but I don't see one that says "Schneider needs to sit this one out" (except needed rest)

When Ernie rests (as if) or when he spells Gimenez, or when he plays 3rd so Kaz can sit/DH or cover 1B so Vlad can DH... Schneider plays 2b

The rest of the time he's your LF and Sanchez gets most of your DH at bats and Lukes/Straw can play RF until Barger gets healthy.

Whoever comes up from AAA isn't a huge issue since your best guys were already here and should get most opportunities. You're not really calling someone up to start.
Michael - Sunday, April 12 2026 @ 12:52 AM EDT (#476644) #
100% agree on playing Schneider. You can have him at 2b with Okamoto as DH or in LF with Sanchez or Lukes in RF or even have him DH with Straw in LF (or even Straw CF and Varsho back to LF). Lots of flexibility. But he does seem to have a consistent bat you want in the order. I'd have him hit 1 or 2 even with Springer out.
Kelekin - Sunday, April 12 2026 @ 03:22 AM EDT (#476645) #
I realize Lauer's line looks bad but all things considered he looked completely wrecked in that 3rd inning and clearly hasn't fully recovered from his illness. His velocity was way down against the White Sox and only a slight uptick this game. If he still looks like this in a couple of weeks, then there's cause for concern.
Kelekin - Sunday, April 12 2026 @ 03:24 AM EDT (#476646) #
Also, I know they won't do it...but Schneider should be the leadoff hitter. We have no "prototypical" leadoff hitter, and the guy sees a lot of pitches.
Katie - Sunday, April 12 2026 @ 07:20 AM EDT (#476647) #
I completely agree Schneider should get close to everyday reps right now and is the best replacement for Springer in the leadoff hole.

Great job by Miles yesterday. Eating those innings and saving the entire rest of the pen was great and doing it effectively was even better, even if the final score made that game look closer than it was.

I think of the small number of Rule 5 picks who made the big leagues out of spring training, one or two have already been returned. Miles is proving excellent value for his selection so far.
greenfrog - Sunday, April 12 2026 @ 09:01 AM EDT (#476648) #
Ryan is off to a good start: 2-1, 21.1 IP, 3.80 ERA, 6 BB, 22 K, 1 HR. He'll probably be on the trading block this summer.
Skubal could be the focus of the trade deadline, of course. It's early, of course, but Detroit is off to a slow start (6-9) and is in fourth place in the AL Central.
Petey Baseball - Sunday, April 12 2026 @ 10:39 AM EDT (#476651) #
I'd say Eloy will get the call because he does have an opt down in his contract later into the summer. I believe it is July 1st. This may be the Jays only chance to get him up here to see if he can be the same guy he was in 2019 and 2023, which was close to All-Star level. He also is terrible in the outfield, but the Jays just need him to replace Springer, who was DH'ing only anyway.

11 games, 35 ABs, .376 OBP, .371 SLG, .744 OPS. 1 double, i home run, five RBIs, 1 sac fly, HBP twice, 5 walks and 9 strikeouts.
It's a solid line, you can argue that Pinango's is better, but he walked less, Ked more and didn't have those productive outs.
Pinango needs more seasoning even if he stays hot.

At 29, there's no reason to wait on Jimenez. It's time to go all in.

If he still looks like this in a couple of weeks, then there's cause for concern.

If he's still this ill in a few weeks his illness was likely covid, and he may never recover to be an effective ballplayer. It would be worth considering who else got ill and monitoring for signs of post viral effects.

Glevin - Sunday, April 12 2026 @ 12:29 PM EDT (#476660) #
Again? Schneider played yesterday and went 0-4. I want him to get run, but Jays absolutely don't have to play him every single day especially in scenarios where he struggles (hard throwing RHP).
scottt - Sunday, April 12 2026 @ 12:50 PM EDT (#476661) #
Bradley throws a hard 4-seamer with better than average rise, a cutter that doesn't cut much but is only around 88mph, a hard splitter that has more fade than drop and an occasional curve.
We know that Varsho and Sanchez can be vulnerable to high heat. It's probably a good match for Clement.

Eloy is hitting between Lukes and Gimenez, no pressure.

What surprises me is that Valenzuela is there for a 3rd day in a row.
Mike Green - Sunday, April 12 2026 @ 01:01 PM EDT (#476663) #
Schneider has faced Taj Bradley six times, going 0-6 with 4 strikeouts.  If you're going to give him a day off, facing Bradley is a decent choice. But not because he went 0-4 yesterday while at a 153 wRC+ for the season and 111 for his major league career.
greenfrog - Sunday, April 12 2026 @ 01:34 PM EDT (#476664) #
If Schneider is going to get better at hitting MLB pitchers who throw 97-98, maybe he needs to face them a bit more instead of being sheltered? And 6 PA isn't much of a sample size. Davis has shown an ability to adapt as a hitter; he might have more success in PA 7-9 against Bradley.
Mike Green - Sunday, April 12 2026 @ 01:44 PM EDT (#476665) #
I agree that it would also be completely reasonable also to give Schneider the exposure.  It's particularly useful for him to have the ABS challenge in his back pocket for hard-throwing RHers who tend to try to expand the strike zone upwards against him.  His judgment in that area of the strike zone is normally exceptional, unless an umpire stretches the zone that way and messes with his approach.
Glevin - Sunday, April 12 2026 @ 02:07 PM EDT (#476666) #
Heinemen is hurt a bit so that's why Valuenzuela is playing every day. Jays should give Schneider more playing time against RHP velocity but I don't find his overall numbers very instructive because we know he can hit lefties and slower RHP and has never been able to hit harder throwing RHP.

Lukes looks completely lost right now.

greenfrog - Sunday, April 12 2026 @ 02:31 PM EDT (#476669) #
Adding to your observation, Mike, I’ve noticed that in the past Schneider would sometimes have outside pitches called against him. The ABS system might help him counter that phenomenon as well. Pitches thrown 97-98 just off the plate outside, or up and away, can be very tough to hit for any hitter, and maybe especially so for Schneider.

This season is not exactly going according to plan:

-Sub-.500 record (maybe three games below after today) after playing mostly bad teams

-Ponce out for the season

-Kirk, Barger, Springer injured

Scherzer's change was not competitive against a lineup with 8 left bats.

Eloy, 2 for 4.

The starting pitching continues to be a problem, but help is on the way.  If you look at the staff as a whole, it is easy to see 9 decent or better pitchers but when only 2 of them are starting you have a problem.  They need Yesavage and Bieber to return and Lauer to regain form.

The offence today wasn't as bad as the 2 runs would suggest.  16 baserunners and 3 doubles will usually result in 4 or 5 runs, but 2 GIDPs and 2-14 with runners in scoring position will do that.

per MLBTR, Martin Perez, 3.14 ERA in 14 innings for the Braves is getting DFAed. Blue Jays should totally be in on him in the short term, IMHO. He's put up like 3.x ERA in 100+ IP over the last 2.x seasons. Can't be much worse than some of our other options.

It's early. Lotsa guys are slumping.
Guys with options have limited leash.

Vladdy has only one home run, but otherwise his offensive numbers are great. His 158 wRC+ is 21 points above his career average of 137. The BB and K rates are fabulous — both career bests by a wide margin. He’s currently on pace for about 6-7 WAR on the season.
SK in NJ - Monday, April 13 2026 @ 12:16 PM EDT (#476685) #
I know the Jays have been hit with injuries and illness, but 2-7 against the Rockies, White Sox, and Twins (6 of those games at home) is the type of stretch that will haunt you months down the road.

If the Blue Jays decide to retool at the trade deadline (a la 2024), they could have some good trade chips in Gausman, Lauer, Berrios, Varsho, Springer, Hoffman, Yimi.

If the team falls off the pace, I could see a number of those players getting moved with a view to trying to compete again in 2026 — building around Vladdy Kirk Cease Yesavage Ponce and others (with King Parker Nimmala Sanchez and others eventually forming the next nucleus).

I get the worry about underperforming the soft schedule, but it doesn't concern me that much because nobody in the AL East is running away. I like to focus on how guys look early on instead of the standings, and while I am concerned by Okamoto, I am encouraged by what I've seen from most of the rest of the team, particularly Gausman/Cease and the back end of the bullpen. Vladdy's 11:6 BB:K ratio is a great sign, the power will follow.

The Blue Jays have acquired infielder Lenyn Sosa from the White Sox, according to announcements from both clubs. In exchange, Chicago receives minor league outfielder Jordan Rich and a player to be named later or cash considerations. The Jays transferred right-hander Shane Bieber to the 60-day injured list to open a 40-man spot. Sosa is out of options and will also need an active roster spot once he reports to the team.
Glevin - Monday, April 13 2026 @ 01:22 PM EDT (#476690) #
Do not understand the Sosa pickup. He's OK, like a borderline major leaguer but he's in the same vein as Fitzgerald or Mendoza or Kasevich. Not big splits either. Just mediocre. Maybe they see something they think they can improve because doesn't make a lot of sense.
Katie - Monday, April 13 2026 @ 01:32 PM EDT (#476691) #
I don't get it either.

Tyler Fitzgerald has 3.8 WAR in a full season of playing time and, even in his down year last year, he had 1 WAR in 250 plate appearances. The Jays haven't found him a single opportunity for playing time yet, even in blowout losses.

Meanwhile, Sosa has -1.2 career WAR in more than 1,100 plate appearances.

They must see something, but aside from Sosa having power, I'm not sure what it is.
SK in NJ - Monday, April 13 2026 @ 01:34 PM EDT (#476692) #
I didn’t like keeping Lukes over Leo Jimenez, and the fact that the Jays keep trying to find a utility IF post-Jimenez DFA (including Sosa who is also out of options), while Lukes predictably falls off makes it look worse in hindsight. I don’t know if Leo will be any good but I do know there was a path to keeping both him and Lukes in the organization and they chose not to go there. Let’s see if they are right.
Ryan Day - Monday, April 13 2026 @ 01:39 PM EDT (#476693) #
I don't understand the trade at all - unless someone is hurting and needs to go on the IL soon, perhaps Okamoto or Clement? - but I do appreciate the value of having Vladimir-Lenyn in the lineup.
Glevin - Monday, April 13 2026 @ 01:40 PM EDT (#476694) #
First a Vladamir and now a Lenyn? Coincidence??
June Northey - Monday, April 13 2026 @ 01:46 PM EDT (#476695) #
This is an odd one - Lenyn Sosa lifetime has an 83 OPS+, negative bWAR every year but last - last year 0.8 bWAR in 140 games 544 PA 100 OPS+.  The 22 HR was nice, but he is allergic to walks it seems (36 lifetime in 1155 PA). Lifetime 197 games at 2B, 65 at 3B, 5 at SS, 46 at 1B, 20 as a DH.  Looks like someone who is sliding on the defensive spectrum fast and might be best as a DH who gets into the field now and then. RH bat.  Very similar to Eloy Jiménez, but with IF as his sorta position like Jimenez is sorta an OF.

No idea who they cut to put him on the roster - this really doesn't make a lick of sense. If he had options he'd be nice in AAA as depth, but if Eloy has burned bridges already maybe it makes sense, Lukes has to be the next guy cut (-37 OPS+, yes, negative) I'd think. But what need does this guy cover? Very weird.  Normally I can squint and see what the Jays are thinking, but here the only thing can be the raw power and hoping having 2 of those guys (him and Eloy) means they will try both and keep which ever one is doing well when Springer returns.  If he was a LH hitter so he could platoon with Jimenez it'd make more sense but as is, I just don't see why this deal was done now.

The guy traded away is Jordan Rich - 17th round pick last year who has yet to play as a pro ($150k bonus, not a crazy amount by any stretch) so doesn't appear to be anything of serious note, but who knows?
pooks137 - Monday, April 13 2026 @ 03:00 PM EDT (#476696) #

I came across some coverage of late (could've even been here on da Box) that mentioned that Andres Gimenez was told in the offseason that he was the team's starting shortstop on Opening Day regardless of whether Bo Bichette returned or not (implying that the plan was to transition Bo to either 2B or 3B if he was to be re-signed, which it seems that the front office didn't pursue seriously at the Mets' pricetag).

Kind of some interesting retconning in the light of Gimenez playing & remaining at SS for the World Series after Bo got hurt last fall and returned hobbled to play 2B.

In terms of Leo Jimenez and the 26th man/utility IF spot, the biggest thing working against him is the lack of options. Even if replacements like Fitzgerald & now Sosa may be similarly out of options (I believe Tyler may still retain one), there's a big mental difference between having one of "your guys" that came up through your system for years being lost to waivers vs a similar guy that you picked up from another org.

It's simply easier to get rid of an outside player when the time comes in a 26th man/utility IF spot that inevitably requires flexibility. Or for lack of performance. Or simply for a numbers game with roster crunches, injuries, veterans returning from the IL, etc.

I recall Matt Antonelli on YT, who was a star 1st round pick with the Padres awhile back but only played briefly in the bigs, talking about the vibe shift that a player experiences as soon as they leave their 1st org. It really sounds like a player really learns quickly that baseball is a business and they are simply a replaceable cog as soon as you leave your bonus baby origin story behind with your first organization.

They absolutely have to stop playing Lukes and send him down.  His OPS is under .300 and he's unplayable.  He can't make any contact and is swinging at absolutely everything.  Go to Buffalo, away from the spotlight and try to fix things.  I know the roster is short but literally every single option is preferable at the moment.
Kelekin - Monday, April 13 2026 @ 04:00 PM EDT (#476699) #
The Jays have put so much stock in drafting middle infielders above all else for years and then DFA them so we can get subpar re-treads.
scottt - Monday, April 13 2026 @ 04:42 PM EDT (#476700) #
Jimenez wasn't drafted.
Clement is the back up at shortstop and third, so they only need a back up at 2nd base.
Sosa could be used as the back up 1B when Vlad DH.
That would be a better roster spot than Fitzgerald.

Sanchez has looked OK. They can play Schneider in left.
Okamoto has slowed down, but he still ahead of Bichette.

Katie - Monday, April 13 2026 @ 04:50 PM EDT (#476701) #
I don't dislike this move because of cutting Leo Jimenez in spring training. Maybe the Jays would have handled that differently if they knew Barger and Springer would get hurt so quickly.

However, don't forget that the choice wasn't Lukes or Jimenez. As the team made very clear, it was Schneider or Jimenez. They could have kept Jimenez in the organization, but it would have been at the expense of Davis Schneider spending most of this time at Triple-A and I don't want to think of what this offence would have looked like without his contributions so far.

The reason I don't like this move is Sosa has a terrible batting eye. He doesn't walk and he has a horrendous chase rate. He's not a good fielder. He has some power, that's about it. And he doesn't have options.

Maybe he'll be gone in a couple of weeks when Barger and Springer return, but I don't see anything here that makes him preferable to giving Fitzgerald some time to try to recapture his 2024 season.
Glevin - Monday, April 13 2026 @ 04:58 PM EDT (#476702) #
Agree with Katie. Not too bothered about losing Jimenez but don't get the appeal of Sosa at all. Fitzgerald seems like at least as good a bet to have value and honestly, Mendoza seems like a similar bet. Doesn't make sense. Yes, Lukes should be sent down but Jays can't until Barger or Springer are back or they'd be down to four OF. Maybe Lukes looks better by then.

Minimum 10 days for Springer is April 22, I think.
Minimum for Barger would be April 17, but that might be too soon.
Yeasavage: threw 52 pitches in single A. At least another start, then he'll need another 5 days before pitching.

"However, don't forget that the choice wasn't Lukes or Jimenez. As the team made very clear, it was Schneider or Jimenez"

That's an indictment on the organization, though. There was no reason to have 4 LHH outfielders on the roster, with at least 1 if not 2 of them likely being better in platoon roles (depending on what you think of Barger vs LHP) and another starting SS who is a LHB who struggles against LHP. Jimenez + Schneider made way more sense for this lineup construction with Lukes in AAA as depth or traded to another organization if they felt a demotion was insulting.

Strangely enough, Leo Jimenez has started two games at DH for the Marlins. Of course, it's going to be hard to crack the middle infield with Otto Lopez hitting 317/364/517 so far.

Things are weird all over.

Romano goes for a 3 run save against the Yankees and does not record an out

It was technically a 2 run lead, 2 to tie, 3 to lose.

I had the end of the game on in the background. Romano hadn't given up a hit yet in 2026 coming into this Yankees meltdown. The YES crew was noting that Jordan's velocity is down from his Jays days, now sitting 95 instead of trending up towards the upper 90s.

They also talked about how he's still a two pitch pitcher. And how it's easier for hitters to sit on one with the reduced velocity & more trouble with his slider.

Trent Grisham crushed a slider to tie the game. Romano then gave up a 2B to Jose Caballero & allowed him to steal 3rd uncontested, forcing the Angels to have to play the IF in with no outs & the tying run 90 feet away.

The game ended on a wild pitch ball 4 to a struggling Ryan McMahon with two on & Aaron Judge on deck.

Romano was struggling with his control & gave up a lot of hard contact.

I finally heard about Davey Lopes' passing about a week ago.  Lopes was my favourite of the 70s Dodger clubs- who had a number of other likeable players (Reggie Smith, Bill Russell, Dusty Baker).  Lopes was one of ten children of a poor single mother in Rhode Island, who used his athletic talents to get a college education.  He had a late start to his major league career with 49 PAs at age 27, before winning a full-time job at age 28. And got the absolute most of his talents until he retired after his age 42 season.  He was an excellent leadoff hitter, with plate discipline, speed and discipline on the basepaths, and a decent defender at second base.  After a mid-career dip (at age 35-37!), he came back as an excellent part-time player from age 38 to 42.  At age 40 and 41, he had 629 PAs, hit .280, walked 89 times, went 72-12 stealing bases and more or less learned a new position well (third base).

Brains, discipline and athleticism are a winning combination for a long and successful career in baseball, and Lopes is one of the best examples of it.

Lopes was the poor man's Joe Morgan, by which I mean exactly zero disrespect. A small guy, high percentage player, added way more value than the metrics of the day would make obvious. Garvey was getting MVP votes while Lopes was at least as valuable.

Interesting that Lopes didn't crack the majors until age 27 and didn't become a regular until the following season, starting a 30-WAR run over seven seasons. A hall-of-fame second half to his career, he just didn't have a first half at all.

I think of Ichiro Suzuki (who had a terrific career in Japan prior to coming to MLB for lhis age 27 season).  Ichiro was better than Lopes from age 28 to the end of his great career, but not by that much.  For the record, Joe Morgan amassed 73 bWAR between age 28 (when he arrived in Cincinnati) until the end of his career.  There are few who did better than that- Babe Ruth, Ted Williams, Stan Musial and Barry Bonds*.
