Tampa 2 Dunedin 1

*** 3 Stars!!! ***

1. Jacob Sharp, Vancouver

2. Jonatan Clase, Buffalo

3. Jay Harry, New Hampshire

Notes

Jonatan Clase went 3-for-3 with a walk and two stolen bases. Carlos Mendoza hit a two-run home run and walked and Josh Kasevich drove in two, including an RBI single. Austin Voth allowed two runs in five innings on three hits and four walks and struck out three. Adam Macko got the hold with 2⅓ innings of shutout ball, allowing one hit and one walk with one whiff while stranding a runner.

Jay Harry belted a two-run homer and Patrick "Bull" Winkel rocked a three-run dinger. Harry did not start the game as he filled in for Jace Bohrofen in right field and went on to enjoy a three-hit night with three runs batted in. Harry is hitting .338 with an OPS of .894. Arjun Nimmala had a double among his three hits and stole a base. Cutter Coffey joined Winkel in the two-hit club with a double and a single. Winning pitcher Chris McElvain made it through five innings and was charged with three runs on four hits (two of them homers) while walking two and striking out three. Nate Garkow gave up a dinger among two runs in 1⅔ but still has a 1.29 earned run average. Irv Carter stranded a runner and pitched a shutout frame. Conor Larkin stranded two runners and finished up the game with 1⅓ innings of one-hit ball with two punchouts. His ERA is down to 1.20.

Jacob Sharp homered for the C's first run and walked it off with a 10th-inning single. In the top of the 10th, he threw out the placed runner trying to steal third base. Kendry Chirinos had a broken-bat RBI double and a walk and Peyton Williams' bloop double to center brought home two. Maddox Latta had a double and a single. Danny Thompson Jr. struck out five but walked four and allowed four runs in 3⅓ innings. Carson Pierce issued five free passes, leading to two inherited runs to score, over 2⅓ scoreless innings. Pierce's line was saved by Kelena Sauer who stranded the bases loaded with a strikeout. He struck out two over 1⅓ shutout innings of one-hit ball. Jay Schueler served up a game-tying bomb in the ninth but Trace Baker struck out two batters in a scoreless 10th inning for the win.

JoJo Parker went deep for Dunedin's lone run, his third round-tripper of the year. Eric Snow had three hits and three stolen bases and Juan Sánchez walked and stole a base. Brayden Heidel was nicked for one run on one hit and one hit by pitch over three innings while striking out four. Jack Nedrow, a 23-year-old free agent signing out of South Florida, made his pro debut and it was a good one with four shutout frames, scattering two hits and a walk with six strikeouts. Lluveres Severino took the loss by surrendering a run over 1⅔ innings.

Clase really needed that game - the guy is out of options after this year and needs to impress at least 1 ML club to get a real shot. His 71 OPS+ lifetime in the majors (178 PA over 2 seasons) isn't enough by a long shot. His 625 OPS in AAA this year isn't impressive at all. From age 20 to 24 his OPS have gone 837-802-783-738-625 in the minors, a troubling trend to put it mildly. Pinango over those same ages (20-24) saw his OPS in the minors go 691-666-720-790-857 and now in the majors with an 849. Not bad for Nate Pearson (79 ERA+ for the Cubs over 41 IP, now in Houston's minors with a 8.10 ERA over 6 2/3 IP 10 walks, 9 K's).

Adding to the above report, the FCL Jays won again and are now 8-0. Bloss had his first rehab start, and Franklin Rojas (who I pegged as one to watch this year) had 5 hits. Two Jays had 10 LOB.

Kelekin good call on Franklin Rojas. Do you or anyone know how his D is?

Thanks, Niall, for the Joe Jackson reference.  It's not well known that he lost some weight and had a successful music career five decades after being banned from baseball.

Victor Arias is having a smashing debut in AA, going 3-3 including a triple and a home today.  He has 5 extra-base hits in 13 at-bats.  He might be in Manchester only until June. He is, I guess, Varsho's heir apparent.  With Arias in center, Keys at third, Nimmala at short and Pinto at second, the F-Cats lineup is loaded and they are now 21-11 on the season.  Stanifer is there already and I wonder if Nolan Perry and Johnny King might make it too this year.

@bpoz - I can't find anything outside of his MLB.com scouting report from 2024:

"Behind the dish, he shows signs of being a solid defender with advanced game-calling ability, blocking and footwork. His transfer and pop-up times wow scouts and continue to improve."

So far, he has thrown out 31% of basestealers in his career.

No writer I've seen ever mentions Larkin and I assume there's plenty of good reason for that, but he gets better and better results.

So, when are we going to start speculating about moving Johnny King to AA?

5 shutout innings tonight, 3 hits, 1 walk, 8 K

In all, 22.1 IP, TEN hits, 14 walks and 33 K
