There is a video up on the ESPN baseball homepage showing the incident (third on the list in the video screen on right side of page). I voted other, something in the range of 35 games. It was more of a light tossing than a malicious throw.

Does it really count when a bat is tossed at a scab umpire?

I don't know which video you watched, but that was no light tossing. An ump could've avoided/caught a light tossing. It may not have been an all out throw, but it was hard enough to break an arm/leg if it hit the wrong way. Bats are made to be hard and inflict impact and damage. There's a good reason you almost never see a player use his bat as a weapon, they all know this. They don't charge the mound with them, they cringe when they accidentally throw them into the crowd. To intentionally throw a bat at someone from that distance (20 -30 feet at most), that's just awful.  Suspend Young as long as possible, and hope the idiot advances past the self control of a 10 year old.

Agreed. That was not a light toss at all. He aimed it deliberately at the umpire and threw it relatively hard. There was no arc to the throw.

Delmon's frustrations about replacement umps aside, that behaviour is inexcusable and he should be harshly suspended. The incident also raises an interesting question of whether or not he can really be considered the top prospect in baseball anymore. With this sort of emotional immaturity, I don't think he can.

He aimed it deliberately at the umpire

I watched the video on the St. Pete Times website, so perhaps it was a different view, but the camera was not on Delmon Young when the bat was thrown. By all indications he was walking backwards and in the heat of the moment flinged his bat behind him without looking.

I'll give him 10 games for careless usage of his bat, but no more.

Kevin Goldstein has a fine discussion of the incident in Baseball Prospectus today. I had forgotten that this was not a first offence for Young.

If it was an isolated incident with a guy who was always considered an outstanding citizen I'd go light, but given it is the second time we know of that he has done something physical with an ump I'd say 50 games or more is needed.  10 games would be a light slap, 20 would be expected from good ol' Bud, but 50 would fit.  Another significant incident and then goes a full season.

As for Delmon Young's prospect status, Goldstein makes the Albert Belle comparison.  Belle's Baseball Reference comparables are uncanny- Gary Sheffield, Reggie Jackson, Dick Allen, Juan Gonzalez, and Jose Canseco are among them.  All had significant "character" issues; some of them overcame the issues and more or less helped their teams win.

Personally, I'd rather have Alex Gordon, for instance, in the system than Young.

I think this is much more serious than a first steroid offense.  Therefore I think longer than 50 games is appropriate.  Attacking an official with a weapon ought to be pretty serious.  I'd say a season is about right.

Delmon Young should be done for the season. If you get suspended 50 games for a first time steroid abuse, assaulting an umpire should be way more. Not only should he be suspended, but he should get a massive fine. The minor leagues are already short on umpires, and who will want to fill in if this is how they get treated.

A light tossing. Yeah right. He flat out chucked that at the umpire.

Are you serious, VBF? You should get a better video, he turned around and tossed the thing at the ump very hard.

10 games would be a joke for something like this.
