Who will end up the starting 1B for the 2007 Yankees?

ESPN reported just now, that Johnny Damon took some ground balls at first today.
When you break it down, if Giambi, Abreu and Damon aren't hitting (or aren't playing at all), the Yankees don't have a great lineup anymore. As we've all been waiting on it for years, it bears repeating : they're old, surely at some point a Yankee or three will show age related dropoff. Well, finally this year, signs of age are breaking out all over.
Unfortunately, I think Helton might be acquirable, especially if they take on the money. Helton might welcome the chance to actually score once he reached base (18 runs in 100 times on base this year...that's gotta' get to you after a while), and the Rockies might want to free up the money to spend, now that they're showing signs of potential.
Well, Giambi is not hitting because he's on the DL. Abreu has started slow but had a decent offensive series against the Sox (two misplays in the outfield to go along with a brilliant game-saving catch) Maybe that is his start? I like Melky alot, and he will only get better with regular playing time out there in centerfield.. Matsui has not returned to form but I am thinking he will, eventually.
They are old, but with their injuries (worse than our Blue Jay injuries) they have brought along some youngsters. And, if they are so old and out of it, they should not have been able to take two from the all powerful Red Sox. Theeeeeeeee Yankees win.
Minky now out for 2 months....a young Phelps at first base scares some people. Mattingly had Damon out there at first all weekend with intentions of giving him some games there. They could also and bring back Phillips.
We now face the same issues....who replaces Lyle? Some of the suggestions I have read would raise an eyebrow or two, just like this Damon/Mattingly sighting did to you. Only time will tell.
And, if they are so old and out of it, they should not have been able to take two from the all powerful Red Sox.
This is baseball, bad teams can, and do, take 2 out of 3 from good teams all the time. That doesn't mean that they're not bad though.

Their line-up did more than okay to stay competitive vs. Ortiz, Manny, Youkilis and HR and RBI leader, Lowell.
They're hurt and that explains the record. If the Red Sox had sustained the same injuries, position by position, the entire Boston population would be out on that ledge.
The positive thing for the Yankees is that the typical age-related dropoff for a great player is to take a few years at the merely above average player level. Even a bad Giambi has been better than most, and Damon has acceptable production from a CF. But the former is injured and can't play defense at all, and Damon doesn't seem like a good idea at first either. Remember the Sheffield adventures there last year? You would think the team would learn it's lesson from that (and since the only reason to play Mientkiewicz is for defense, I assume they have). First base may be the easiest defensive position, but to shift there from the OF takes more than a few ground ball sessions. Although I would be curious to see Damon make the throw to second base...seems like getting "picked off" might become a viable strategy with him over there.
