I think Boston is the #1 team in baseball especially when you consider Ortiz's hideous start, Lowell's injury, and the fact that they have so much depth. I'd have the D-Backs as the class of the NL, although I think some of their younger guys are going to go through some growing pains. The Cubs are a very good team as well, but right now, they have everyone playing at the top of their games and I don't see that lasting.

Ortiz's hideous start has been exaggerated.  Yes, he was almost non-existent for 10 games, but since then he's been one of the best hitters in baseball.  10 games is a slump, not a hideous start.  Robinson Cano is having a hideous start.

I go with the Cubs.  They've got a great line-up.  1 through 7, I don't know if anyone can compete with them.  As one example, Ramirez is 4th on the team in slugging - and that's with a .523.

Their rotation is looking solid - they don't have a 5th right now, but I think Hill will eventually make it back.  Lilly's season has mirrored Ortiz - brief bad start but then lights out in the last month.  Wood and Marmol are a solid 8th-9th in the bullpen.  It's been 99 years, so the 100th anniversary will be a nice one.

Speaking of the Cubs rotation given these K:BB figures, which would you pick to have the lowest ERA+ (figures for the Cubs most started pitchers)?
  • 56K: 19BB
  • 46: 19
  • 53: 26
  • 27: 17
  • 15: 18
Hands up all that picked the 56: 19 - that's Lilly and his 86 ERA+.  The rest (in same order as above):
  • Zambrano (180)
  • Dempster (164)
  • Marquis (89)
  • Hill (107)

The poll said Best Team right now. I think that is Tampa Bay.

If you just asked me who the best team was, I would say Boston.

Exactly my thinking as I wrote the question, rpriske. Although I personally voted Cubbies.
