Gone but not forgotten - Mickey Cochrane and Josh Gibson. Gibson was probably the best catcher in the history of the game.
It's interesting how Ivan Rodriguez has taken Carlton Fisk's nickname and run off with it. I, for one, am glad. It never suited Fisk, anyway. Fisk was tall, somewhat noble-looking, and extremely deliberate (the endless mound conferences, the pauses whilst he stopped to examine the label on his bat...)

Yeah, I thought about Gibson when posting the poll, which is why the question has the "MLB" tag in it. I don't know enough about Cochrane to make an excuse to include him or not; wouldn't he be right there with Bill Dickey? (Actually, I just checked and BBRef has Dickey as Cochrane's most similar player.) So if you open the door for Cochrane, you start wondering about Hartnett and Lombardi and Fisk and other HOFers who I think are all one clear notch below the pantheon five (six with Josh) listed.
