No pitchers were considered in this poll (if you've ever watched the Rangers, you know why -- apologies to Charlie Hough and Kenny Rogers, I guess, and even to Nolan Ryan and Fergie Jenkins).

The most interesting thing about this list of nine players is that, if you DH Pudge Rodriguez, you have a starting lineup, one player for each position. An icky defensive outfield, to be sure (Greer plays CF, I guess) but an interesting spread of offensive talent in Ranger history, to be sure.

I agree Mike. It's funny, but I have a feeling that if this poll was taken on a Rangers-oriented site, the winner would be either Greer or Bell (probably Rusty over Buddy) but as I write this, neither has received a single vote from the "non-Ranger" populace here.

Good question, Chuck. And as I write this, I see every candidate has at least one vote, though only Pudge, Palmeiro and Gonzalez have more than two each -- I am frankly surprised that Pudge is not running away with this even more than he is.

And no, his parting was not in any way acrimonious, in my view; he is still widely beloved in these parts. My comment wasn't really derogatory to Pudge, it was more of a "wow, they hold Rusty Greer in wayyy high esteem 'round these parts" reaction. Same with Bell, though a bit less so. I think Rusty might win a Ranger fan poll for the same reason Derek Jeter would do disturbingly well in a Yankee poll (which will also feature guys named Ruth, and -- well, we can stop there, I think.) Greer is/was a hometown hero. You know? He was Reed Johnson but with Alex Rios' talent, more or less. Hope Rios lasts longer!
