Presumbaly no apologies necessary to the two 0-4 relievers out there, Joe Thatcher of SDP and Chad Qualls of ARI, who were not included in this poll.

Zito is by far the most likely to get the opportunity to win some games. He's not getting released anytime soon.

I'm surprised how many Hughes fans there are still.  He has a 9 ERA, walked & struck out 13 in 22 IP and has a WHIP of over 2.

His game logs...
  1. 6 IP, 2 runs - his best game and it was against a AAA offense ... er ... the Jays
  2. 3 IP, 3 runs vs KC
  3. 2 IP, 7 runs, 6 earned vs Boston
  4. 5 1/3 IP, 5 runs vs Baltimore
  5. 2 IP, 0 runs vs ChiSox (don't know why pulled so fast)
  6. 3 2/3 IP, 6 runs vs Detroit
This is not the type of thing that is tolerated in NY for long.  I'm shocked he has received 6 starts and isn't in AAA yet.  Two out of 6 times he finished at least 4 innings.  That is totally pathetic and kills a team's bullpen.  His confidence has to be dropping fast and he is bound to make changes that screw up his delivery and/or pitch selection leading to injury or worse results or both.  No way should this kid be in the majors right now.  In Halladay's nightmare season of 2000 he had 4 out of 13 starts that lasted under 4 innings - Hughes already has done that in 6 starts.  Halladay's ERA+ that year was 48, Hughes is currently at 45.  Hughes needs a clean up of everything or his career will go down the tubes.  Now, as a Jay fan that is great but to think Hughes will get more than 5 wins in the majors on the season is, at this point, a sucker bet.

Or Zito could have the most likely opportunity to lose the most games. Or drive himself to insanity or the DL, whichever comes first. Maybe both at the same time.

I believe Matt Morris was already cut by the Pirates, so I think he may be out of chances.

I'm not a Hughes fan, I'm just not a fan of any of those pitchers.  I think there's a great chance that none of them will be in a major league starting rotation by the end of the year (Morris has retired and Zito's already had a temporary gig in the pen).

So instead of choosing the best pitcher, I went for the team most likely to win in spite of the horrendous pitching.

You did accurately describe Hughes, but the rest of the roster certainly has its issues as well.
  • Zito - 33 IP, 17 BB, 16 K, 60 ERA+.  1 for 10 K / BF.  Pitches for the worst offense in the NL.
  • Chico (arguably the best pitcher in the list so far) - 40 IP, 16 BB, 27 K.  Pitches for the 2nd worst offense in the NL.  Still has options left and at 25, like Hughes, likely to be demoted
  • Jennings - 27 IP, 18 BB, 12 SO, 49 ERA+.  A worse K / BF than Zito.
  • Morris - retired.

Am I the only one that sees some humor in 4% voting for a retired pitcher only days after significant posting in another thread that bloggers can do a better job than real GMs?
