A couple of big name pitching prospects came up small on Sunday.

Apologies, folks but a multitude of uninteresting things is going to force me to cut this pretty short today.  Fear not, though; there wasn't much to get excited about, despite a 2-2 day for the affiliates.

Colorado 11    Las Vegas 5

The 51s trailed this one 11-1 heading into the bottom of the ninth so kudos to them on pulling within six.  Brett Wallace banged out his 9th homer of the year in the final frame for his only hit of the day.  He also walked and struck out twice.  J.P. Arencibia was 1-for-5 with a strikeout.

Lance Broadway started and wasn't awful going six and allowing 3 runs on seven hits with two walks and five strikeouts.  It was Marty McLeary who found the PCL not to his liking giving up seven in two innings work.

Reading 5    New Hampshire 16

With kinda-almost-sorta-maybe Jay Phillipe Aumont going head-to-head with Zach Stewart, this had the makings of a real duel.  You know how that often shakes out.  Aumont lasted just 1.2 while Stewart certainly didn't have his best stuff giving up five runs on seven hits and two walks in six frames.  He struck out just one.

The Fisher Cats offense teed off on former Jay Ty Taubenheim, though thanks to homers from Brian Jeroloman and the awesomely named Callix Crabbe, who hit a Grand Slam.  Most of the Cats were in on the fun as well.  Brad Emaus went 1-for-4 with a walk and two RBI, Eric Thames doubled, walked, and scored twice, while Adam Calderone and Jonathan Diaz each had three hits.  Diaz, like Emaus, has a wacky BB:K rate at 15:3.  The Anti-Fuenmayors.

Dunedin 4    Lakeland 3

Al Quintana went 3-for-4 to pace the D-Jays while Tyler Pastornicky had a hit and his 7th stolen base.  Kevin Ahrens went 0-for-3 and is hitless in his past 15 AB.

Joel Carreno started and was fine in his four innings allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks while striking out five.  Frank Gailey was better in relief picking up the win with three shutout innings.  Matthew Daly tallied his 7th save.

Fort Worth 5    Lansing 2

Chad Jenkins isn't fairing as well in Lo-A as you might have hoped.  He got knocked around a bit again on Sunday giving up four runs (three earned) on nine hits in 5.2 frames.  The good news is he walked none and struck out seven.

Not a heck of a lot going on at the plate.  Balbino Fuenmayor went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI.  Sean Ochinko was the only other Lugnut to have two hits.  A.J. Jimenez was 0-for-4 with two Ks but picked a runner off second base.

Three Stars:

3rd Star: Balbino Fuenmayor- 2-for-3, 2 2B, 2 RBI

2nd Star: Jonathan Diaz- 3-for-4, 2 R, 3B, 2 RBI, BB

1st Star: Callix Crabbe- 2-for-3, 2 R, HR, 4 RBI, BB, 2 SB

I wonder how much of Jenkins'  "troubles" are related to Defence.

He has shown good control and is striking out 1 an inning.  The hits are out of whack but his GO/AO are 1.67 - so he is getting ground balls.

Any stats available for low A that would tell us if he is just too hittable?

Nice to see Balbino in the three stars again.

I have seen Jenkins pitch three times this year and I wouldn't attribute his troubles to defense in Lansing.  In two of the three outings (yesterday included), he was hit pretty hard.  His fastball is really flat right now and he is sitting around 92 or 93.  There is a lot of talen there and you can see it, but he is throwing more than he is pitching right now.

The logs completely support what LF is saying.  Jenkins has given up 13 line drive hits, and 5 fly-ball hits, in addition to the homer.

Any reports on what Jerolman sprinkled on his pancakes to suddenly turn him into an offensive force?  Seemed he was always labelled as all-glove, no bat (but good eye), but his start this year must be the best stretch of his career.

Also Gerry, I think it would be really useful to do an article on the pitchers throughout the lower levels.  Most of us know the AAA/AA pitchers and a couple of the lower pitchers, but I don't think many of us know which arms in Lansing and Dunedin we should keep an eye on.

Even though I am happy to see Jeroloman hitting well after a weak 2009, I have to temper my enthusiasm somewhat.  Here is why: Jeroloman has a 40% strikeout rate.  He has 24 strikeouts in 60 at-bats.  In the 36 at-bats where he has connected with the ball he has 21 hits.  That means he is hitting .583 on balls in play (BABIP).  That level is unsustainable.  Jeroloman needs to cut down on the strikeouts to keep his average up long term.

On a more positive note Jeroloman has increased his power so it's like he is turning into a JP Arencibia but with more walks.  Maybe not quite but he appears to be changing into more of a slugger, more power and more K's.

In regard to the minor league pitchers I can do some analysis but I might wait until after my first trip to Lansing later this month.  In Dunedin, Henderson Alvarez is obviously a top prospect, I like Chuck Huggins but I think he might end up in the bullpen.  I am not as enthusiastic about Carreno, Liebel or Page.

I will have to wait on the Lansing pitchers until I see them in action.

Right on with the name "Callix Crabbe".  A name like that should automatically earn a 30% bonus on any future contract he gets in baseball.  Callix Crabbe should indeed go down as one of the great names in baseball.  What are some other names that rival 'ol Callix?  Can't think of any.

Gerry - do you think a lot of Jeroloman's drastic change in performance the past 13 months has been due to the fact he realizes he needs to pass Arencibia? He's always been a smart defensive catcher who can get on base, but I was looking at the numbers trends and it seems like he's sacrificing patience in attempts to be more of a slugger.

Kelekin:

You could be right but the answer is in jeroloman's head and none of us know that answer.  I haven't seen any interviews with him that touch on the subject.  I should catch-up with the Fisher Cats in June and I can ask him then.

Whatever Zaunie used to sprinkle on his? Oh wait, that was HGH.
