Three weeks of play, three different first-place teams in our Yahoo league. I'm aware that my sudden rise to the top of the standings is about as significant as the K.C. Royals' fast start. My pitching (except for Cliff Politte) has been superb, as Jason found out in a 10-1 shellacking -- 61 IP, 3 W, 5 SV, 2.21 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 3.07 K/BB should earn a few category wins in most matchups, and this week it was good enough for a 6-0 split. Heading into a collision with Billies Bashers, with the Gashouse Gorillas on deck, no trash will be talked here -- I'm not overconfident, just cautiously optimistic.

Here's the standings after three weeks of the 22-week regular season:

1 Toronto Walrus 26- 9-1 .736 -
2 Baird Brain 24- 9-3 .708 1
3 gashouse gorillas 24-11-1 .681 2
4 Springfield Isotopes 22-12-2 .639 3.5
5 Billies Bashers 21-14-1 .597 5
6 Nation Builders 19-15-2 .556 6.5
7 Hannibals Cannibals 19-16-1 .542 7
8 Reykjavik Fish Candy 19-17-0 .528 7.5
9 AGF 16-16-4 .500 8.5
10 Sub-Urban Shockers 16-16-4 .500 8.5
11 Eastern Shore Birds 17-18-1 .486 9
12 Chatsworth Halos 16-18-2 .472 9.5
13 Red Mosquitos 16-18-2 .472 9.5
14 Mebion Glyndwr 16-19-1 .458 10
15 Jicks Rays 13-20-3 .403 12
16 Moscow Rats 11-20-5 .375 13
17 Garces_not_on_roids 13-22-1 .375 13
18 K-Town Mashers 13-23-0 .361 13.5
19 Geoffs Grumpy Group 11-23-2 .333 14.5
20 Thunderbirds 10-26-0 .278 16.5

Even a lopsided HtH victory can be extremely close; one big day by a Jick's Rays hitter and one great start by a pitcher could have turned this "rout" into a split:

Team R RBI SB AVG OBP SLG IP W SV ERA WHIP K/BB Score
Baird Brain 41 41 5 .280 .371 .445 61.1 5 4 3.08 1.37 2.08 11
Jicks Rays 38 38 2 .259 .366 .500 54.1 3 3 4.14 1.40 1.54 1

All 20 owners are active, which is great. What surprises me is how busy people have been. I'm usually the league leader in "Moves" because I like to troll for free agent bargains, but not in this group -- five owners have made more transactions, and I'm tied with three others near the middle of the pack. We've made a lot of deals, probably because there's not much help on the waiver wire. I'd still talk trade, especially if someone wants a closer and is willing to pay market value. Could be a 2-for-1, I'd move Baez or Julio and an OF (Bradley? Mench?) for one better hitter or a decent starter.

Yeah, that was really close. Fortunately it was Baird Brain's hitters that had the big Sunday, and my staff had been strong enough all week to withstand Buerhle's collapse (14.54 ERA, 3.00 WHIP).

Anyways, new week, new opponent.

Week 3 Roto Summary

Just the numbers this week, it's bad form to talk after absorbing such a whuppin'. Congrats to Chatsworth, we'll see if the Mashed can make it more interesting in our August matchup.

_R Billie - Monday, April 21 2003 @ 03:15 PM EDT (#90111) #
Unfortunately, it looks like Schilling may miss a start this week with the flu. He pretty much singlehandedly kept me respectable in pitching last week...well him and Chacon. It could get pretty ugly this week against the Walrus pitching staff. I hope for my sake that Carlos Lee has finally broken out of his pathetic slump.
Coach - Monday, April 21 2003 @ 04:00 PM EDT (#90112) #
Thanks to a subdued Jonny. Billie and I are reverse trash-talking now; how Canadian. "No, I insist -- your team is much better."

Schilling may miss a start this week with the flu

What strain of flu casues a person to lose his appendix?
_R Billie - Tuesday, April 22 2003 @ 12:03 AM EDT (#90114) #
The appendix flu. Obviously, I had him confused with someone else.
_Jurgen - Tuesday, April 22 2003 @ 12:28 AM EDT (#90115) #
Having only narrowly beaten Jicks, I'm starting to worry that there's more to my team's namesake than just a pun--as the Royals go, so too does Baird Brain?
_Jurgen - Tuesday, April 22 2003 @ 12:29 AM EDT (#90116) #
Oh, and thanks again, Jonny, for compiling all the stats.
_Jonny German - Tuesday, April 22 2003 @ 10:31 AM EDT (#90117) #
Thanks for the thanks, Jurgen & Kent. I've made my task quite painless with a couple of macros.

I took a little flak for not drafting Schilling or Johnson in the first round on the principle that they are "old as dirt", so I'm feeling a little smug about their situations. I've never liked the Diamondbacks, but no ill will towards their respective BBFL owners.

As you may have heard, Hinske broke out big time yesterday. Nick Johnson had a very big day too... look out for the Mashers!

I think Operation Shutdown has gotten quite interesting as well. Check out the scores of the 3rd through 6th place teams:

3. 446.0 London Lavender Sox
4. 445.0 Shoeless Joe's
5. 444.0 SNK Crushers (BASEBALL STARS RULES!)
6. 443.0 Toronto Walrus

Of course, I'm only pointing this out because I'm the GM of the Purple Hose.

I guess Randy just wanted to join Griffey and Rivera on the DL. Now I just need to trade for Nevin or Hoffman and I will be ready with my well rested keepers for next year....

The Cannibals really sh*t the bed last week. The Gorillas weren't overly dominating in the pitching categories, but even a 4.5 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP were enough to best my tattered staff. In the goathouse: Dessens (9.00), Appier (7.56), and Radke (12.60). This is two weeks in a row Benitez has cost me saves with his meltdowns.

Loiaza, Glavine and Hudson were all dominating, but in Estaban's case I don't see it lasting. Also, Glavine's low K totals are hurting me despite his stellar ERA and WHIP.

Offensively, I'm suffering because, as Prospectus pointed out today, Craig Wilson's status as backup catcher, the reason I drafted him, is keeping him out of the lineup and pinch hitting situations for fear of being left without a catcher on the bench.

My hitters, for the most part, are struggling, having managed only a .400 SLG last week. Alfonzo (.320 OPS last week), who I was criticized for grabbing too early, has been a complete drain, as have Brandon Phillips (.422) and recent rediscoverer of gravity Ty Wiggington (.360).

My all-stars for the week were D'Angelo Jimenez with an absurd .583/.905 line, Choi (still not playing every day despite) .591/1.125 and Overbay .444/.640. Hopefully, the return of JD Drew this week will boost my counting stats and SLG, and I'm counting on Phillips to get it going after a 3/3 Monday.

Overall, I'm planning on the extreme performances evening out, and if not, my pitching is sunk. I think this is the week my hitting comes together and Fish Candy's falls apart, but with such a godawful pitching staff, this looks like a close matchup.
