In any given baseball game, the "impossible" can happen. For example, last night the Tigers beat the A's, with Steve Avery getting his first save in 15 years as a pro, and Cleveland, with a rookie pitcher facing Freddy Garcia, beat Seattle. So the D-Rays can win this afternoon, even though their pitcher's ERA has been above 8.00 for the last three years.

Soft-tossing lefty Jim Parque, (maybe) 170 pounds, with a history of arm trouble, had his most promising start in ages last week. It was "only" the Tigers -- keep in mind the Jays have scored more than twice as many runs as Detroit this season -- but he had a no-hitter through six innings. He threw 100 pitches, just 57 for strikes, walking four while striking out just two, as the shutout improved his 2003 ERA to 9.24. Although Parque has had success against Carlos Delgado in the past (1-for-12 with 5 strikeouts) he has generally not been a lefty-killer, so I won't be surprised if Cat and Hinske are also in the lineup.

LH Doug Davis makes his third start in a Blue Jay uniform, aware of Kelvim Escobar looking over his shoulder. If Davis pitches well again, and Mark Hendrickson does the same tomorrow, Toronto may have to send Escobar to AAA for a start or two, or they might consider him for Tanyon Sturtze's next turn. Expect Stewart to sit for the first time this year, and Dave Berg might even play left field. Mike Bordick is again unavailable; he's attending to unspecified personal business.

This game marks the end of the first 25% of the season, arguably the most difficult quarter, and with a win, the Jays will be one game under .500, to the surprise of those who wrote them off at 7-15 not so long ago. It's a 12:35 start, radio only, with the roof open for the first time this season. I won't hear much of it because UFA plays its final regular season game this afternoon, against East York.

I had some problems with The Fan internet broadcast, but found the following alternative in good working order.

Scratch that "save" for Avery, my mistake. He got the win by picking up the wild Franklyn German for the final out in the top of the ninth, fanning Scott Hatteberg to keep it tied 1-1, then the Tigers scored the winner.

Baldelli's incredible speed led to the D-Rays scoring first; he beat out a grounder to first where both Delgado and Davis (according to Tom Cheek) did everything right. Then Rocco scored easily on a Travis Lee double.

A Stewart walk and a Wells single were left stranded as Parque struck out Delgado and Wilson, so it's 1-0 Tampa after one.

Is Escobar warming up yet? this is ugly, might as well make it uglier.
Coach - Thursday, May 15 2003 @ 01:17 PM EDT (#102178) #
Davis is throwing a lot of pitches (55 with just one out in the second) and not very well. He gave up an 8-pitch leadoff walk to Sandberg and an infield single off his glove to 2B Antonio Perez, for the rookie's first career hit. Felix Escalona, hitting .150, singled to load the bases. A flare to CF by Shumpert drops in for a hit and it's 2-0 Tampa. Baldelli drives in two more with his MLB-leading 57th hit; a wild pitch makes it 5-0. Kelvim could get his big chance today.

The radio guys are very confused about the Blue Jays coaches. Bullpen coach Bruce Walton made a mound visit, and Mike Barnett was at 1B. Nobody knows where Patterson and Gibbons are.

That a boy, Doug.
Coach - Thursday, May 15 2003 @ 01:27 PM EDT (#102180) #
Brian Bowles, with runners on base and two outs, immediately gave up a 2-run double to Toby Hall, so it's now 7-0, all charged to Davis. I'm guessing that Tosca wanted to get the under-utilized Bowles some work, and buy Escobar more time to warm up.
Coach - Thursday, May 15 2003 @ 01:55 PM EDT (#102181) #
Catalanotto led off the third with a single, and Wells, now the AL leader with 39 RBI, mashed a second-deck homer (his 10th) to make it 7-2. Parque has thrown over 60 pitches already, so this is far from over.
_Jabonoso - Thursday, May 15 2003 @ 02:03 PM EDT (#102182) #
Now Escobar has two places to fill for: Sturtze's and Davis.
The former being a protége, look for the later in long relief.
What's is Bowles doing in this league?

A wild pitch has just cashed Phelps to make it 7-4 and Woodward is up representing the tying run. My reaction is a general, "Are you kidding me?"
_Shane - Thursday, May 15 2003 @ 02:05 PM EDT (#102184) #
With all those kids watching the game at the Dome today, it was nice of Jays and Rays to put on a clinic, of what I have no idea. Wild pitch makes it 7-4.

You had the crystal ball out when you wrote the title for today's game thread. Wild one already.

Chuck Swirsky is that you?

When Swirsky says it it's not a question. I, on the other hand, really want to know.

7-5 on a Stewart sac fly. Shannon was a surprise starter, considering his tender hammys, and it's interesting that Werth wasn't in the lineup.

Maybe they've already decided to give Escobar a start elsewhere, as Tosca's gone to Jeff Tam. That's the good Tam; he struck out his first two batters in a 1-2-3 inning. Mike Wilner just summed up Toronto's bullpen management for most of us, asking "who knows what the thinking is?"
Dave Till - Thursday, May 15 2003 @ 02:29 PM EDT (#102189) #
O-kay. Who, exactly, is on the mound out there, wearing Jeff Tam's uniform?
Coach - Thursday, May 15 2003 @ 02:45 PM EDT (#102190) #
Kelvim Escobar strikes out two and gets Baldelli to ground out to short. I guess he's getting a chance to go four innings, if he can keep his stuff and his concentration. He could also get a W if the Jays stage another rally, and I don't expect Colome to no-hit them much longer.
Coach - Thursday, May 15 2003 @ 02:52 PM EDT (#102191) #
Nothing to do with the Jays game, but how long will Dusty Baker stay with Kerry Wood today? Showing no ill effects from throwing 141 pitches in his last start, Wood has struck out 12 through 6.1 IP and has a 1-0 lead, but he's at 115 pitches already.
_Shane - Thursday, May 15 2003 @ 02:54 PM EDT (#102192) #
They might not get no-hit by the Rays bullpen, but apparently if they're going to score anymore runs it's coming by way of base hits only. Neither team is taking any pitches, and Tampa has gotten the momentum back with these pathetically quick innings.
_Jabonoso - Thursday, May 15 2003 @ 03:01 PM EDT (#102193) #
At least the kids could see some real major league pitching!
_Elijah - Thursday, May 15 2003 @ 03:08 PM EDT (#102194) #
OK Jerry, that's why you don't *try* to play for one run.
_Elijah - Thursday, May 15 2003 @ 03:09 PM EDT (#102195) #
I should add . . . when you are down two runs in the late innings.
_Chuck Van Den C - Thursday, May 15 2003 @ 03:14 PM EDT (#102196) #
Elijah, I hear you brother. I was about to write the same thing.

For those not listening to the radio broadcast, in the 7th inning, Jerry Howarth praised Wilson for having done his job, advancing Delgado to third. Yep, gotta love them productive outs!

One run strategies are bad enough, but all the more when you're down two.

Tosca's reluctance to pinch-hit continues to gnaw at me. While I can see wanting to give Myers the day off after a night game, he would have looked nice pinch-hitting for Wilson in the 7th. Since Harper was brought in to face Wilson, Piniella could not have switched to a LHP to face Myers.
_Shane - Thursday, May 15 2003 @ 03:28 PM EDT (#102197) #
Well atleast they didn't lose to Parque, that would have been almost as embarrassing as if they'd lost to Steve Parris. Does that make any sense?
_Elijah - Thursday, May 15 2003 @ 03:31 PM EDT (#102198) #
Chuck, I've thought a little more about this one-run strategy when the leadoff hitter reaches second, especially since the Rays have that situation. Of course, going for one-run is a little more sensible when you're up two in the 9th.

But it was especially questionable in the 7th given the propensity of Phelps and Hinske to strike out. I think it makes more sense if you have Stewaart or Catalanotto hitting since they're likely to make contact.

Anyway, I'm happy to see Tosca leaving Lopez in there to face Lee. Lee strikes out a ton and that's exactly what they need here. Oh well, Lee just walked so now Hall, who is a good contact hitter is up. Eh, whatever.
_Jabonoso - Thursday, May 15 2003 @ 03:36 PM EDT (#102199) #
Does Tosca makes any sense?
_Shane - Thursday, May 15 2003 @ 03:39 PM EDT (#102200) #
I'm laughing right now. "Lee strikes out a ton and that's exactly what they need here. Oh well..." You gotten love those running posts will an inning is still unfolding. 9-4 for Sweet Lou's squad of terrible waiver claims and signings. The payroll's twenty million dollars, and half of that is paying for a guy whose hitting singles for another teams minorleague squad somewhere in a corn field. I love it.
_BB Reader - Thursday, May 15 2003 @ 03:52 PM EDT (#102201) #
Shane...

At least get the score right.
_Shane - Thursday, May 15 2003 @ 03:58 PM EDT (#102202) #
...and it was 9-5. Thank you, i'm humbled. Thank God you were here BB Reader, what would posterity do without you?
_Shane - Thursday, May 15 2003 @ 04:10 PM EDT (#102203) #
Since were maybe a little sensitive in here today, and anonymous too, just in case it wasn't clear, the laughter I was having was due to how Elijah wrote/worded his "...Oh well" running dialogue, where I assumed he worote it for humour. Yours truly wasn't laughing because of his observation/guesses or post content. Thank you.
_Elijah - Thursday, May 15 2003 @ 04:22 PM EDT (#102204) #
Shane - I was typing the part about pitching to Lee as the inning unfolded but I was interrupted by a phone call (how dare work get in the way of a day game). By the time I got back to it, Lee had walked and I didn't want to make it sound like "I told you so" because I wanted to state my position before the Lee walk. It turned out to be funny because of what happened but I was actually serious. ;)

So I didn't take it offensively. I'm still more disappointed at the result of the game. So is Vaughn really on a cornfield somewhere? I don't think his salary is counted towards the ~$20M payroll though.
_Shane - Thursday, May 15 2003 @ 04:31 PM EDT (#102205) #
Oh, I don't know for sure about the Rays payroll, I just remember hearing the figures back in early April when Vaughn was still there. I probably don't have it totally right, I hadn't stopped to look the figures up. I was just riffing.

Vaughn's actually playing for a Colarado Rockies minorleague team somewhere, again to lazy to look it up, and he's not just hitting "singles" either. I saw a minorleague box score last week with his name it, and I believe he had hit a couple ding-dongs.
_Elijah - Thursday, May 15 2003 @ 04:52 PM EDT (#102206) #
According to BA, Vaughn is hitting .282/.395/.662 with 7 HR, 21 RBI, in 71 AB in Colorado Springs. Of course, it is Colorado Springs. The Rockies really don't need him (Walker, Payton, Wilson, Kapler) so they may just call him up later this season and trade him to desperate contender.
Gitz - Thursday, May 15 2003 @ 05:00 PM EDT (#102207) #
Peter Gammons on ESPN just said Vernon Wells is comparable to a "right-handed Jim Edmonds." Is this an accurate assessment?
_Shane - Thursday, May 15 2003 @ 05:05 PM EDT (#102208) #
One thing first, without looking it up (again lazy), doesn't Jim Edmonds walk like a 100 times per year? That ain't Vernon.
_Spicol - Thursday, May 15 2003 @ 05:41 PM EDT (#102209) #
Jayson Werth has been sent to Syracuse.
_Shane - Thursday, May 15 2003 @ 05:45 PM EDT (#102210) #
...As well, it's floating around on the net, that Escobar is pitching Sunday instead of Sturtze. Don't know if he's outrighted to the pen or is bumped a day, or what?
_Chuck Van Den C - Thursday, May 15 2003 @ 06:24 PM EDT (#102211) #
Re the Wells/Edmonds comp...

Of course they both play strong defensive center field, so that's obviously the starting point of the comparison.

Wells had his first full season at age 23. Edmonds got just under 300 AB at age 23/24, becoming a regular at age 24/25. So Wells has the advantage of a slight head start.

Edmonds started out his career with an AB/BB ratio of about 10:1. These days it's about 5:1. Wells was 22:1 last year and is about 15:1 this year. Clearly Wells has a way to go even to get to where Edmonds was at the start of his career.

So, Edmonds has the batting eye advantage and Wells, a slight time advantage.

Had Edmonds' career followed a normal developmental path, I'd still have been inclined to give the edge to him.

But his career hasn't been normal. He, like Rafael Palmeiro, has become a better player in his 30's. While Wells could certainly do the same himself, to forecast that he (or anyone) will would be ludicrous.

So, while Wells is not an entirely terrible comp for the young Edmonds of the mid 1990's, he's a lousy comp for today's Jim Edmonds, who has posted OPS's in the high 900's the past three seasons.

Jim Edmonds, today, is basically Carlos Delgado with the bat and Vernon Wells with the glove.

Vernon Wells, today, is basically Joe Carter with the bat and Vernon Wells with the glove.
robertdudek - Thursday, May 15 2003 @ 06:43 PM EDT (#102212) #
"Vernon Wells, today, is basically Joe Carter with the bat and Vernon Wells with the glove."

Well said. I may add that he is a young Joe Carter with the bat - the one that would regularly mash homeruns against the Jays as a Cleveland Indian.

Vernon needs to work a little more on his pitch selection early in the count - that's the only thing holding him back from becoming a truly special player.
_Jurgen - Thursday, May 15 2003 @ 06:44 PM EDT (#102213) #
I prefer the Joe Carter with the bat and Devon White with the glove comp.

It was a tough day at the office for Doug Davis, but he's still in the rotation. For now.
