With our regular season over at the end of August, the race for playoff spots is heating up. Not at the top, where the first-place Gashouse Gorillas pulled away with a decisive 9-2 victory over the Springfield Isotopes. Falling to twelve games back in second spot is my own Toronto Walrus; more about my nightmare week later, but I was very fortunate to escape with a draw. Billies Bashers solidified their hold on third in the Head-to-Head standings with a 7-4 win over Baird Brain, one of four teams in a scramble for three remaining spots in the championship playoff round. Mebion Glyndwr advanced with an 8-4 victory against the Nation Builders, and Red Mosquitos edged AGF 6-5 to get one game closer to sixth place.

Teams can still make a sudden move in the standings. The Eastern Shore Birds began the week in 15th place, 3.5 games out of a berth in the consolation playoff round. A 10-2 romp over Geoffs Grumpy Group moved the Birds past two rivals and just a half-game away from being one of the twelve who will play in September.

Here are the Week 13 standings:

My team needs to regroup. I had two pitchers whose ERA and WHIP were "infinity" -- Carl Pavano and since-released Michael Tejera both failed to record even one out while the Red Sox were pounding them for eleven runs in their record-breaking first inning. Cliff Politte's been a disaster, as all Toronto fans know, and even Billy Wagner got hit last week. Needless to say, Jick's Rays won five pitching categories, and I was extremely lucky to get a point with two saves. Ace Matt Morris is being pushed back a few days because of a knot in his shoulder blade, and newest acquisition Jason Schmidt just had a start postponed due to a "stiff" arm. I'm hopeful that Carlos Delgado and Jason Giambi will keep the Walrus respectable while the pitching staff heals.

A three-game losing streak has emphasized my need for bats. No pitcher on my staff is unavailable since I am banking on Randy Johnson returning before it is too late. I am looking for solid bats, position less important. I can also trade outfielders along with pitching, for an upgrade at said position. So please don't mind if you get some desperate trade proposals from me in your mailbox...

You know it aint your week when your starting pitcher (who has 3 wins for the season) gets a save (Graves)...and I compile as many saves in a week as I have had in almost the entire season.

Cannibals can't catch a break- Green hitting like crap all year, Fonzie (who I drafted too high to begin with) tanks worse than anyone could expect, Drew missing every other game (as usual, but still...), Brandon Phillips needing a demotion, Jimenez slumping his way to below mediocrity, Craig Wilson stuck as the Bucs backup C, making McLendon hesitant to play him more, even with Kevin Young gone. Mark Grace continues to get inexplicable PT in Arizona, so Overbay sits a couple times a week, and Choi will take a backseat to Karros in Chicago when he comes off the DL. It takes a lot of things going your way to be dead last in every hitting category- the boys are shamed, but in their defense, have been a little protein deprived since the local morgue switched to electronic locks....

To anyone who made trade offers for I-Rod, I couldn't deal him then because C. Wilson still hasn't qualified at C. As soon as Wilson qualifies, I'd like to deal Rodriguez for a better hitter at a position with more abundant talent.

Billie's Bashers this week, the Gorillas next week. By mid-July, what's left of my team may be getting ready for next year....

I'm 16th in roto stats but 7th in the standings. Funny.

Is it good roster management? Shrewd trades? The ability to see into the future? Not at all, gentlemen. It's a little thing I like to call luck. Get me to Rama.

Why didn't I keep my last pick in the draft. He(Kapler) would have put me over the top in many categories. Oh yeah, he hasn't played much until this week! I'm going to ride his hot start for as long as I can(a week) then cut him loose. Well Walrus, looks like Delgado and Giambi saved your bacon again. I don't think I'll break into the top six at this pace, so if anyone wants a two for one with one(or two) of my pitchers and a positional player for an upgrade at said position, I'm all ears. (..) P.S. HAPPY CANADA DAY EVERYONE!!!PARTY ON DUDE!!

If you've got a real good memory, you may remember a calculation I posted following our draft for this league, translating our picks into power rankings of the 30 MLB teams. Well, I took those power rankings and used them fairly directly in entering Lee Sinin's Predictions contest. The contest is to predict the order of finish of each team in each division. Give yourselves a pat on the back for your collective predictive powers, because my entry has risen steadily and now stands tied for 3rd with 198 points, 5 points out of first. Now if only I could remember the scoring rules...
