As the major league Alex Rios watch began last night the depleted Syracuse Skychiefs won without him as the minor league teams were 2-1 on the night.

Syracuse 8 Charlotte 4

Syracuse entered this game as the hottest team in the IL. The Chiefs got on the board in the second inning. With two outs Gabe Gross doubled, Noah Hall singled him in and Jeff Guiel hit his second home run of the season. Charlotte got one back in the bottom of the second off Sean Douglass. Howie Clark homered in the third to restore the lead to three but Charlotte answered with a home run of their own in the fourth. The Chiefs put it away in the fifth. Paul Chiaffredo homered to lead off the inning. Russ Adams, Marvin Benard, Howie Clark and Shawn Fagan singled and Glen Williams and Gross had sac fly's. Charlotte got a couple in the sixth but that was it.

Douglass turned in a second good start allowing four runs in six innings. Kevin Frederick made his first AAA appearance for the year and pitched two strong innings. Clark with three hits, and Adams with two, led the hitters.

Game Story
Matt Michael has the scoop on the roster moves

New Hampshire - Day Off

The Fisher Cats are excited because their local rivals, the Portland Sea Dogs, Bostons farm team, are in town tonight. Portland will start a knuckleball pitcher tonight.

Dunedin 7 Brevard County 3

Dunedin scored two in the second and two more in the third to give Kurt Isenberg all the runs he needed last night. Isenberg has been inconsistent this season, as he was in his college career. This was Isenberg's ninth start. In four of them he has been shelled, and in three of them, been gone before the end of the third inning. In his other five starts he has allowed a combined four earned runs. There is no middle ground. Last night was a good night as he pitched six innings with a line of 6 8 3 2 0 4.

The hitters were led by Carlo Cota who was 3-5 with a double and a triple, two runs and two RBI's. Rodney Medina also had two hits with a triple.

Lexington 3 Charleston 1

After running their win streak to seven with a fifteen innings win the night before, Charleston did not have the energy for extra's last night and lost in the tenth. Charleston scored first in the third. Juan Peralta singled and scored on a double by........who else?, Ryan Roberts. After a rough start to the season, Ramon Mora has settled down and become a strong part of the rotation and he kept Lexington off the board through six innings. Lexington homered in the seventh to tie the game. Mora's line was 7 6 1 1 0 8. Felix Romero came on in relief and, because the bullpen had been used so much the night before, pitched three innings. In his third inning he was touched for two runs and that was it. Peralta was the only cat with two hits.

Game Story

Our Three-Star Selection

The 3rd Star: Ramon Mora, seven innings with one run allowed
The 2nd Star: Carlo Cota, three hits, DB, TR, two runs and two RBI's
The 1st Star: Howie Clark, 3-5 with a home run

Tonight's games; Syracuse (Towers) at Charlotte, 7:15 p.m., Portland at NH (Lee), 6:05 p.m, Lakeland at Dunedin (Banks) 7:05 p.m., Lexington at Charleston (TBA) 6:05 p.m. All games except the Dunedin game are on internet radio. I'll do the first few innings of either the NH or Charleston games. Anybody else available?

Charleston starter should be Danny Core
_Rob - Friday, May 28 2004 @ 01:55 PM EDT (#61695) #
Mike: I can take the first part of either NH or Charleston. I'd prefer NH, unless you want it. Either way, I'll do about an hour of BBRadio at 6.
Mike Green - Friday, May 28 2004 @ 02:03 PM EDT (#61696) #
Rob: NH is yours. I'll do Charleston.

Identifying yourself as just "Mike" on this website is not very helpful. Mike M, Mike D, Mike B and I would love to welcome you into our club, but we need help.

From minor league baseball.com......

Dunedin - Placed OF Ron Davenport on the DL. Activated OF Miguel Negron and IF Raul Tablado.
Mike Green - Friday, May 28 2004 @ 03:28 PM EDT (#61703) #
Davenport's having a fine year, so that's a shame, but I'm glad to see Negron and Tablado back. At the start of the year, both looked like they might be establishing themselves as prospects.
_Sneeps - Friday, May 28 2004 @ 03:33 PM EDT (#61704) #
Charleston's game has already been called due to rain. Isn't it a bit early to call a game?
Mike Green - Friday, May 28 2004 @ 03:43 PM EDT (#61705) #
Thanks, Sneeps. I guess that I'll pick up Rob's NH game or the Syracuse game later on. Can anybody pick up either the NH or Syracuse game at 7?
_Jordan - Friday, May 28 2004 @ 03:49 PM EDT (#61706) #
I'm especially looking forward to seeing how Tablado does once he shakes off the rust; he was off to a tremendous start. Negron needs to stay healthy; he missed the last half of 2003 and about half of 2004 thus far, and has to post a full season in order to get noticed.
_Sneeps - Friday, May 28 2004 @ 04:10 PM EDT (#61707) #
Jordan, Tablado is a notoriously fast starter, the problem with him is he's never been able to sustain it.
Hopefully he'll stay healthy for the rest of the year, and put up some good numbers.
You're right about Negron as well, he's been very prone to injury the last couple of years. Hopefully he's keeping his body in good shape, and he's just having bad luck.

...to Syracuse, that is!
Mike Green - Friday, May 28 2004 @ 05:08 PM EDT (#61711) #
So, recapping the infielder moves of the day: Hudson on DL, Clark to TO, Clapp to Syracuse, and Tablado returns to Dunedin.

I'd love to see Ryan Roberts be given a shot at 3B in New Hampshire. I don't know that it will happen, but youneverknow.

Re I'd love to see Ryan Roberts be given a shot at 3B in New Hampshire. I don't know that it will happen, but youneverknow

Mike if Ryan Roberts keeps hitting these bombs I think there is a very real possiblity that he could once again be playing third base. I not sure why they moved Roberts to second, but I know it wasn't becuase of his defence, all the reports I've seen rate him as an excellent defensive third baseman. I can only presume the jays did not think he would produce the kind of offense he is, though he did have an excellent collegiate career.

Anybody else having a problem with the NH broadcast?
_goatboy - Friday, May 28 2004 @ 05:57 PM EDT (#61714) #
Re: Anybody else having a problem with the NH broadcast?

Yes, the media player is making noises like something out of a bad Si Fi movie and real player has talk radio. Any word on possible rain outs?
_goatboy - Friday, May 28 2004 @ 06:08 PM EDT (#61715) #
I've just gone on the minor league web site and the New Hampshire game is listed as Delayed. I presume becuase of rain.
_Rob - Friday, May 28 2004 @ 06:18 PM EDT (#61716) #
Damned internet. I just got on after being disconnected for 3 hours, but I guess the game is delayed anyway. Strange how things work out.
_Rob - Friday, May 28 2004 @ 06:34 PM EDT (#61717) #
Well, nonetheless here are today's expected starters (Game time unknown) for Portland vs New Hampshire

And now my third non-intentional post in a row:

I can't do any of the game tonight, as I could only listen until 7. The radio link is still spewing out some alien language, so there's nothing to listen to even if I could stay.

I was looking forward to the game, too...
Oh well. Go F-Cats! :)

Bottom of 3 in Charlotte AAA:

I arrive with two outs/nobody on. Josh Towers strikes out Jeremy Reed swinging. That makes 4 Ks for Towers on the night.

0-0 after 3 innings.
Mike Green - Friday, May 28 2004 @ 08:51 PM EDT (#61720) #
Top 4 AAA:

Diaz pitching for Charlotte.

Marvin Benard doubles on the ground over first base. Glenn Williams follows with an identical double to score Benard. Gross, Hall and Guiel fly out with Benard remaining at second.

1-0 Sky Chiefs after 3 and 1/2.

Dunedin behind Banks leads 6-1 after 4.
Mike Green - Friday, May 28 2004 @ 08:57 PM EDT (#61721) #
Bottom of 4 AAA:

A ground out 4-3 (Stubby Clapp to Shawn Fagan), a strikeout by Towers, and a single by Joe Borchard on the ground up the middle, brings Bobby Smith to the plate. Borchard tries to steal second, but Chiaffreddo guns him down.

1-0 Sky Chiefs after 4.
Mike Green - Friday, May 28 2004 @ 09:04 PM EDT (#61722) #
Top of 5 AAA:

Stubby Clapp strikes out looking. The next batter (I missed his name) grounds out. Russ Adams flies out to the warning track in right.

1-0 Sky Chiefs halfway through this one.
Mike Green - Friday, May 28 2004 @ 09:10 PM EDT (#61723) #
Bottom of 5 AAA:

Bobby Smith flies out to Guiel in right. Jamie Burke flies out to Guiel in right-centre. Ryan Hankins lines a single to left. Kelly Dransfeldt grounds the ball off Towers' glove to Clapp, who flips to Adams for the force.

Towers is working very efficiently with consistent first pitch strikes.

1-0 Sky Chiefs after 5 innings.

Dunedin is now win 9-1 in the 7th. Banks has just given up 4 hits
Mike Green - Friday, May 28 2004 @ 09:24 PM EDT (#61725) #
Top of 6 AAA:

I lost my connection for the first two batters. Benard is on first, one out. Glenn Williams strikes out swinging. Benard advances to second on a passed ball. Gabe Gross hits a homer to right (a rainbow shot). "ABC ya later" is the Syracuse announcer's call. Noah Hall walks on 4 pitches; Diaz has thrown over 100 pitches. Jeff Guiel runs the count to 2-2, and flies out to left.

3-0 Sky Chiefs after 5 and 1/2.

I've got to go after the next 1/2 inning. Can anyone take over?
_goatboy - Friday, May 28 2004 @ 09:31 PM EDT (#61726) #

Bottom of 6 AAA:

Andres Torres homers to right on a 3-2 count. Jeremy Reed goes back-to-back with Torres with a shot to straight-away center. Bryant Nelson makes it 3 in a row with another one to right. Mike Bell struck out. Borchard strikes out swinging. Bobby Smith homers to deep left. Jamie Burke flies out to right.

4 runs for Charlotte on 4 solo homers.

4-3 Charlotte after 6. John Dean said "when the going gets tough, the tough get going". That's me, I guess.

Dunedin won 9-1. Josh Banks went 7 innings, gave up 4 hits and 1 walk, while striking out 7. Vito homered. Negron DHed, Medina was in center and Tablado saw no action despite coming off the DL.
