Good morning, this is the Batter's Box Minor-League Update for Monday, June 14. Gerry McDonald is on assignment today and is not available to post his report. This is Kenny Brocklestein delivering Gerry's report for him.

The three Jays farm teams that played yesterday combined for exactly four runs. New Hampshire eked out a win thanks to a strong start from Cam Reimers and some excellent relief pitching.

Syracuse 1 at Rochester 3

Josue Matos pitched well and gave up 5 hits and 3 walks in 6 innings. Unfortunately, 3 hits and all 3 walks came in the third inning to give Rochester their three runs. Dave Gassner again stymied his former team. The Chiefs plated their only run off Gassner in the fifth: Marvin Benard tripled and scored on a wild pitch. The Chiefs did have runners on second and third with one out in the ninth, but could not get either runner home. Russ Adams was 1-4. Gabe Gross went 2-4.

New Hampshire 1 at Trenton 0

Trenton won 1-0 on Saturday night, so turnabout was fair play on Sunday. Cam Reimers was excellent, pitching 7 1/3 shutout innings, allowing just five hits and one walk. Reimers ran into trouble in the eighth, leaving with runners on first and third with one out. John Ogiltree got the first batter to ground to third base. The throw home cut down the go-ahead run at the plate. Ogiltree got the third out to send the game to the ninth. Aaron Hill singled and moved to third on a Trenton error. Jose Umbria hit a sac fly to score Hill. Adam Peterson pitched a perfect ninth for the save. Aaron Hill was 1-4.

Dunedin - All Star Break

Charleston 2 at Lexington 8

The Alley-Cats are struggling as they close in on finishing their first half. Luckily for them, their closest challengers are losing too. Ramon Mora was lucky to only allow two runs in the first: Lexington had three hits and two walks in the inning. Charleston tied the game in the fourth. A walk to Ryan Roberts, a double by Brian Patrick and a double-play ball scored two for the Cats. Juan Peralta made two errors in the bottom of the fourth and Lexington went ahead 4-2. Mark Sopko allowed a four-spot in the eighth.

Our Three-Star Selection

Choices were tough on this day...

The 3rd Star: Brian Patrick, 2-4 with a double, a walk and an RBI
The 2nd Star: John Ogiltree, great relief to put his team in a position to win
The 1st Star: Cam Reimers, 7 1/3 innings, five hits

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the FSL is a split-season league, right? So Dunedin are first-half champs?

:) Geez, why ask a question I can confirm in 30 seconds myself? Yes, Dunedin are the first-half champs and will play the second-half champs in the playoffs. Well done D-Jays.
_philip - Monday, June 14 2004 @ 10:04 AM EDT (#58014) #
So here's my question. If the D-Jays finish 1st again in the second half, do they play the team with the 2nd best overall record, or do the 2nd place teams from each half have a playoff, or does something else happen??? My congrats to the team as well.
Craig B - Monday, June 14 2004 @ 10:06 AM EDT (#58015) #
All I know is that it's a "wild card team". Presumably the team with the 2nd-best overall record.

Has Quiroz started to do anything yet?
_Sneeps - Monday, June 14 2004 @ 11:30 AM EDT (#58017) #
And there it is, the daily Quiroz question that almost certainly will go unanswered.
I wish I knew my friend, it has been almost 6 weeks, and I'm starting to get ansy myself.

Dave Gassner appears to be having decent year at AAA: 3.17 76.2 IP 72H 11BB 38K. The lack of K's are maybe a concern. Think the Jays let a good one get away?
robertdudek - Monday, June 14 2004 @ 01:18 PM EDT (#58019) #
The lack of K's is a huge concern. In my mind it outweighs all the other positives. Striking out 4.5 K/9 in AAA is equivalent to about 3.5 K/9 in the majors and there are very very few pitchers who can be successful at that rate under current conditions.
Craig B - Monday, June 14 2004 @ 01:56 PM EDT (#58020) #
Unfortunately, the FSL All-Star Break comes in the middle of the first half. So the first half isn't done for Dunedin; they still have 7 games left and lead by 2 1/2.

What's the word on Jason Arnold? I haven't seen him on a boxscore in a while. I'm assuming it is due to injury, correct? It's not that big of a deal, since he wasn't showing signs of being ready anyway, but the more near ready arms assembled, the better prepared we are in case of injury (i.e. Jason Kershner never has to start a game again, ever).
_MatO - Monday, June 14 2004 @ 02:10 PM EDT (#58022) #
Auburn starts their season on Friday and Pulaski on Monday. I guess we should be hearing about a whole slew of signings at any time now.

Just providing some not very useful answers to two questions posed earlier: I've heard no updates on either Quiroz or Arnold, but neither injury was supposed to be deeply serious (i.e., season-ending) at this point. That said, broken hands need time to heal, and any pitcher's arm injury is cause for concern. More news when we receive it.

Lexington now leads Charleston 14-1 in the 7th. Ouch.

At the bottom of this story COMN, it says that Quiroz should be ready to go in 2 weeks.

Brad Miller, looks like a great late round gamble. Hopefully he impresses this summer, and they sign him before school is back in.
Mike Green - Monday, June 14 2004 @ 09:55 PM EDT (#58030) #
With both Syracuse and Charleston taking it on the chin, and Dunedin and New Hampshire having the day off, the pickings for the 3 star selection tomorrow will be slim indeed.
_Sneeps - Monday, June 14 2004 @ 10:07 PM EDT (#58031) #
Dunedin played Mike, and also took it off the chin.

Vince Perkins came off the DL today and Brad Mumma went back to Auburn

Nice, Jordy Templet with not bad of a Debut. Hopefully Perkins can get things going in the starting rotation.

Here is a chat transcript with Toronto draft pick Curtis Thigpen of the University of Texas Longhorns.
robertdudek - Tuesday, June 15 2004 @ 12:21 AM EDT (#58035) #
I found this to be a fascinating answer and I can't recall anyone else stating that they do this:

Question: When in the on deck circle what are you saying to your bat (?)

Curtis: I'm actually not saying anything to my bat, but I am doing an eye exercise to help with depth perception. I pick out a small target on the center field wall and a small letter somewhere on my bat. I hold the bat about 3-5 inches from my eyes and I begin by looking at the wall. When my eyes are focused there, I switch to the bat. It takes your eyes a little bit of time to adjust, but as you keep going back and forth, it takes your eyes less and less time to adjust. Its just like watching the ball from the pitchers hand to home plate.
(emphasis mine)
_Sneeps - Tuesday, June 15 2004 @ 12:39 AM EDT (#58036) #
Wow, that is pretty interesting, but I'm sure 99% of ball players do some sort of warm up drill like this.
robertdudek - Tuesday, June 15 2004 @ 01:25 AM EDT (#58037) #
I'm not sure. I've looked at plenty of major league players in the on deck circle and I haven't noticed any strange eye movements.
