Who will the Jays trade? Who will they trade with? Here's your chance to win fame and fortune by predicting what will happen over the next couple of weeks.

Paul D suggested a points system in today's roundup thread:

5 points for predicting the number of major leaguers traded away by the Jays, 3 points for correctly picking the right player, 2 points for what team they're going to trade with... Maybe with a cuttlefish as a prize?

I think this works, except that I'm picking 0 trades, so how do I score that?

Rule alteration suggestions are welcome.

Rule alteration suggestions are welcome.

Just add a category for number of trades, and impose a penalty for incorrect guesses in all categories. That should allow you to win with a guess of zero trades.

With Mauer likely headed to the DL again with knee problems I would like to see the Jays trade Batista, Zaun and Phelps to the Twins for Justin Morneau, Jesse Crain (or Francisco Liriano) and Scott Baker.

Good call, Four Seamer.

So, total number of trades correct: +5
Each correct Jay traded: +2
Each correct player traded to the Jays: +2
Each correct team traded with: +2
Each incorrect trade: -1

Does that sound fair?
_Paul D - Monday, July 19 2004 @ 11:45 AM EDT (#49317) #
Good call on the negative points for incorrect trades. Otherwise you could just predict everyone being traded and probably get some points.

I predict 2 trades involving 2 major league players:

Trade 1:
Greg Zaun to the CWS for a minor leaguer

Trade 2:
Terry Adams and a minor leaguer to Oakland for 2 minor leaguers

Named For Hank - Monday, July 19 2004 @ 11:51 AM EDT (#49319) #
Before the trade is made? ;)

Dunno, when should it be? End of the week would be too long from now -- isn't the trading deadline less than two weeks away?

How does Thursday sound?

I'd like a magic unicorn that craps M&Ms

Way to punish someone for a little lateral thinking Moffatt.

While possibility of the the Twins parting with both Crain and Morneau is remote, injuries to key players like Mauer can cause contending teams to panic and do stupid things.

I'd like a magic unicorn that craps M&Ms.

Ah, the candy that melts in your mouth, not in your @ss.

If Batista keeps pitching like he has lately, and with the lack of pitching on the trade market, someone might get desperate and knock the Jays' socks off. The Pirates want an unreasonable amount for Benson and he isn't nearly as solid as Batista, so it appears to be a seller's market.
_Moffatt - Monday, July 19 2004 @ 12:41 PM EDT (#49326) #
Way to punish someone for a little lateral thinking Moffatt.

Well, in that case, when we're done that trade, why don't we send Dave Berg to Anaheim and get Kotchman in return.

Remember how the Jays pried Jose Cruz from the Mariners for Davey and Spoljaric? A week before they had laughed in Ash's face at the request. He was considered all but unattainable.

I don't remember that one. I remember when they traded Spoljaric and Timlin for Cruz, though ;)

If Batista keeps pitching like he has lately, and with the lack of pitching on the trade market, someone might get desperate and knock the Jays' socks off.

Okay, let's examine your proposal under a little more scrutiny. It's really two trades:

1. Batista for Morneau
2. Zaun and Phelps for Jesse Crain and Scott Baker

Number one is a pretty big stretch. Arguably the best power hitting prospect in baseball for a 2/3 starter. But you're right, teams do get desperate. It's incredibly unlikely to happen, but I suppose not impossible.

Now look at trade 2. A waiver-wire catcher and a 1B/DH guy they don't need in return for two of the best pitching prospects in their system. Why on earth would they want this deal?
_Marc - Monday, July 19 2004 @ 12:47 PM EDT (#49331) #
OK, Moffatt, since I am way off base whom do you think would be a reasonable return for Batista, should the Jays be inclined to trade him?
_Moffatt - Monday, July 19 2004 @ 12:48 PM EDT (#49332) #
Batista isn't going anywhere.
_Snappy - Monday, July 19 2004 @ 12:48 PM EDT (#49333) #
The M's got Timlin & Spoljaric in that deal, but good point... its fun to speculate on trades but I do think the ones where some poor fool team gives us way too much aren't as fun to speculate on.
I don't think Batista will get traded, its bad GM karma to sign a guy to a 3 year deal and trade him after six months. Moves like that hurt a GM's reputation with players, fairly or not.
Named For Hank - Monday, July 19 2004 @ 12:49 PM EDT (#49334) #
Hey, Moffatt, you can't pick the same as me. Get your own bet.
_Marc - Monday, July 19 2004 @ 12:52 PM EDT (#49335) #
Phelps (who still has a big power upside, despite what the Jays think) and a .300 catcher with more than solid receiving/throwing skills... keeping in mind Mauer would have to be out for an extended period (which is possible, he is on the way to see the doctor). Crain is a little over-rated in many parts, which is why he hasn't wrangled a full-time gig yet (remember Nakamura had some outstanding minor numbers in that system too). Drop him, then. Baker and Morneau, is that more reasonable? Two top prospects for a No. 2 starter, a DH/1B (who would basically take over one of the spots next year instead of Morneau) with 20-30 homer potential and a .300 solid switch-hitting catcher.
_Marc - Monday, July 19 2004 @ 12:54 PM EDT (#49336) #
OK, he's not getting traded but all I want to know is what kind of talent you think he could get in return for his services... Use Jays' prospects if you want just for easy reference.
_Moffatt - Monday, July 19 2004 @ 12:54 PM EDT (#49337) #
Hey, Moffatt, you can't pick the same as me. Get your own bet.

I don't think the Jays are going to make any trades, but what the heck, I'm making fun of other people's predictions, so I guess I should give them something to work with.

Here goes:

Reed Johnson to Oakland for John Baker.
Thomas - Monday, July 19 2004 @ 12:55 PM EDT (#49338) #
Moffatt. You're wrong on several counts. First of all, I want Dallas McPherson for Dave Berg, and I won't accept anything less from the Angels. Second of all, I'd like Grant Balfour instead of Baker, but I guess Balfour's not really in their system anymore, so I'll let you off there.
_Moffatt - Monday, July 19 2004 @ 12:55 PM EDT (#49339) #
RE: Batista. He could get a high prospect, but I'd think more in the 11-20 range, rather than a top 3 guy like Morneau. A Rios or Quiroz type guy.. maybe a bit higher.
_Moffatt - Monday, July 19 2004 @ 01:05 PM EDT (#49340) #
The above is also with the caveat that I'm not as high on Rios as the average Bauxite. His progress will be determined by his ability to add upper-body muscle mass.

Catalanotto to the Marlins for Abraham Nunez.
_Marc - Monday, July 19 2004 @ 01:19 PM EDT (#49342) #
Fair enough. I think you're under-estimating what Batista is worth on a seller's market, but you think I am over-estimating. This is a perfect example why many trades don't get done... GM's rarely agree either.
_Kristian - Monday, July 19 2004 @ 01:21 PM EDT (#49343) #
1. Zaun to the Marlins for the infamous PTBNL

2. Josh Phelps to the Mariners for Gil Meche

3. The Jays sign The Cat to a deal for next year and promptly tell Carlos that Frank will be the everyday first basemen and Carlos will have to DH for the rest of the year. Delgado then agrees to waive his no trade clause and gets moved to the Dodgers for James Loney.
_Moffatt - Monday, July 19 2004 @ 01:22 PM EDT (#49344) #
I suppose that's true. While I do think Morneau for Batista is a pretty big stretch, it was mainly the other part of the trade I think is incredibly lopsided.

Or to put it differently, would you even consider making that deal if you were the Twins?

Catalanotto to the Marlins for Abraham Nunez

I always forget that there's two players named Abe Nunez. I was wondering how the Marlins were going to get Cat in exchange for a guy in the Pirates system. :)
_Marc - Monday, July 19 2004 @ 01:24 PM EDT (#49345) #
Catalanotto to the Marlins for Abraham Nunez.

Will anyone take an injured player? Cat needs surgery at the end of the season and is only able to play at 70 per cent and likely DH.

Josh Phelps to the Mariners for Gil Meche

I pick: 2 deals

Adams to the Mets.

Speier & Zaun to the White Sox.

Who does Toronto get? Nobody that will play this year (except maybe as September call-ups.)
_Rob - Monday, July 19 2004 @ 01:24 PM EDT (#49348) #
My only guess:

Frank Catalanotto to San Francisco for a good minor leaguer, or two lesser players.
_Marc - Monday, July 19 2004 @ 01:27 PM EDT (#49349) #
I'd love to see the Jays get Meche... I like his stuff for the closer's role or setup.

I'd also love to see the Jays get Loney for Delgado... That kid's bat was smoking in Spring Training and he's only what 21?

Moffatt: I like Baker a lot so I wouldn't necessarily trade him (which is why I'd covet him), but I would trade Crain and Liriano or Bonser or Durbin (if healthy) for Phelps and Zaun.
_Noah - Monday, July 19 2004 @ 01:29 PM EDT (#49350) #
Zaun to the Marlins

Cat to the Cardinals

Batista and Dominic Rich to the Twins for Morneau

Marc: I really like Baker too, hence the lopsidedness of the trade.

A good rule of thumb when suggesting trades is that any suggestion you make you'd at least consider (thought not necessarily make) if you were in the other guy's shoes.

Toronto makes two trades, one to Minnasota and one to Oakland (in that order)

Phelps gets sent to Minnie, along with Speier for two propects, one of whom stays in Toronto and one of whom goes to Oakland, along with Rios, in exchange for Harden.

Unlikely, but there's no point in guessing the mundane.
_Rob - Monday, July 19 2004 @ 01:34 PM EDT (#49354) #
Well, JP can find someone there he likes, I'm sure.
San Fran needs some offense and a lefty bat, so Cat could fit in there. What have I got to lose, one point? :)

Just an idle question: how many of you posters who either believe or fervently hope that the Jays are going to get Morneau from the Twins are keeping the dream alive because he's Canadian?

In other words, would we ever be mentioning his name if he was from Mobile, Alabama?

_Moffatt - Monday, July 19 2004 @ 01:51 PM EDT (#49359) #
I don't think there will be, but I've made a career out of being wrong. There will probably be one or two minor ones, which none of us predict.
_Noah - Monday, July 19 2004 @ 01:55 PM EDT (#49360) #
I think the interest in Morneau stems from two things:

1. The need (most likely) that this team will have for a first baseman

2. The lack of available first base prospects in our system who are major league ready

3. The fact that he's one of the top rated prospects overall

The fact that he's canadian doesn't change the fact that he's a top prospect who fills what will soon be an immediate need.
_Moffatt - Monday, July 19 2004 @ 02:02 PM EDT (#49361) #

Noah,

I agree with each and every one of your points. But the number of posts longing for Morneau on this site is almost inversely proportionate to the indications emanating from Minnesota that he is available in trade talks, of which there have been none. There are lots of speculative arguments as to why Minnesota might be open to moving him (they're burying him in Triple AAA, Ryan might get desperate, etc) but not one of them, as far as I can tell, is grounded in anything substantive coming from the Twins' camp.

So I'm merely wondering if this wishful thinking is being prodded along by the fact that he has a Canadian passport. I just have a hard time believing that would be talking so much about him if he didn't, but I've been wrong before, and will be again.
_Moffatt - Monday, July 19 2004 @ 02:05 PM EDT (#49363) #

I think you're right. If Kotchman was the Canadian and Morneau was from the States, I think we'd hear a lot more rumours about the former than the latter.
_Daryn - Monday, July 19 2004 @ 02:11 PM EDT (#49364) #
I think its pretty hard to bet on who we'd get in exchange... but maybe easier to have a shopping list of talent etc...

for instance, I think the Cat will be traded in exchange for 2 prospects, one ML ready as a Sept callup this year, and one for next year... maybe a 1B... LF.
_Marc - Monday, July 19 2004 @ 02:13 PM EDT (#49365) #
Personally I like Morneau not because he's Canadian but he seems more attainable than Kotchman because the Twins haven't exactly acted like they consider him a big part of their future by keeping him buried in Rochester. And in the long term, Morneau projects to hit for more power and could hit for average like Kotchman. I see Kotchman more like a Mark Grace or Will Clark (not that that is a bad thing AT ALL).
_Moffatt - Monday, July 19 2004 @ 02:14 PM EDT (#49366) #

I still don't see how Cat is going to pull in anything given that he's going to play the rest of the season with a tear in his abdomen...
_Wunderbat - Monday, July 19 2004 @ 02:17 PM EDT (#49369) #
I think the fact that Morneau is Canadian is definitely a factor in the interest, though it is not the overwhelming factor. Its the fact that he is Canadian, and he's a top prospect that is really attractive as there is the chance that he could be like Larry Walker or Eric Gagne. Albeit these are very lofty goals, but the possibility is exciting. Not only does it work on a baseball level but also on public relations level. If he turned out to be very good, and he did it on the Jays, that could have a significant impact on fanbase. As it is, Simon Pond got one of the loudest cheers on opening day.

He is also one of bigger name minor leaguers (especially in Canada), and this is also a big factor. Could explain why the continued interest in him, as opposed to say, James Loney for example who is not as familiar to the more casual baseball fan.

I'm not saying I only want Canadians, just he would be an interesting pickup, however unlikely that may be.

Zaun would be a good fit for NY (AL). It would also be a place to dump some money if JP felt like he needed to.

I’ll throw out Zaun to the Yankees for Brad Halsey or Alex Graman.

Someone earlier compared Crain to Nakamura. Not so fast my friend, Crain is electric and could step into the bullpen this August/September and make an impact.

I highly doubt they will move Batista, with the uncertainty surrounding Halladay. Someone has to be around to lead the staff in 2005. If Halladay is a question mark then Batista has even more value to the Jays.

So.. who else has any value in a deal (that they would realistically consider moving):
Adams perhaps, Speier maybe, Delgado if he were to waive and maybe something could be had for Gomez. F Cat might fetch something if he were healthy…..

This season has been so bad even the trade deadline is boring…
_Moffatt - Monday, July 19 2004 @ 03:36 PM EDT (#49378) #
With all the discussion of trading Batista, I'm surprised only Mick has brought up the possibility of trading Ted Lilly.

To me Lilly seems like a much better target for a trade. Unlike Batista, he wasn't signed as a free agent, and only has 1 year left on his contract rather than 2.

He probably doesn't have quite the appeal of a Batista, but if the market for pitching is anything close to what Marc describes, then you have to figure the Jays could get quite a bit for him. They could then sign a decent 2/3 guy in the off-season, particularly since they wouldn't be on the books for Lilly's 3.1 million next year.
_Mick - Monday, July 19 2004 @ 03:36 PM EDT (#49379) #
Zaun would be a good fit for NY (AL). It would also be a place to dump some money if JP felt like he needed to. I'll throw out Zaun to the Yankees for Brad Halsey or Alex Graman.

One of the Yankees top two pitching prospects (from an admittedly depleted farm system) for a third-string catcher? Gratned, Zaun is outplaying Flaherty right now, and has had a slightly better career, and is three years younger ... but add all that up, and it's not going to get Halsey or Graman.
_Jim - Monday, July 19 2004 @ 03:43 PM EDT (#49380) #
The Yankees have been known to overpay on occasion, and they don't seem like they are in love with Halsey or Graman (especially Graman). The only players they seem to value in their system are Navarro, Cano and the OF they just moved to the FSL who name escapes me....

The Yankees have made a few mistakes this season. They have rode Posada into the ground. He has really been brutal for a while now, and it's hard to see someone with his mileage bounce back in a second half. They also have overused Gordon and Rivera in my opinion. Won't keep them from the playoffs, but that is two big advantages they could have (C and back end of the pen) that they might equalize some with the way they utilized them this season.

Hey, the Mets just traded Karim Garcia to the Orioles for Mike DeJean. Have two worse players ever been dealt for each other?

Should those with similar predictions (i.e. Player X to Team Y for prospect) at least pick a prospect to make things a little more interesting?

It would be more interesting, but if people don't want to, you can't make 'em.

Of course, by not naming a player, you can't win any of the "Each correct player traded to the Jays: +2" bonus points. So I'd say it's worth guessing.

Tosca to the A's for Ken Macha, and we'll throw in the Unicorn
_Ryan Lind - Monday, July 19 2004 @ 07:01 PM EDT (#49391) #
Hmmmm....

-I doubt Cat will be dealt since he's hurting.
-I doubt anyone wants a DH who can't hit RHP.
-I doubt Batista or Lilly will be traded, since they're both cheap and effective.

So that leaves...who? Gregg Zaun and the Arson Squad?

I'll say Adams to the Giants for a PTBNL is the only trade.

Hi everyone.

It's been a heckuva week up here. I live in Peterborough; which currently smells like death. I was lucky, as my place is on a hill and I suffered no damage. It was the end of a long week, which started with a MVA where I lost my car and busted up my hand.

C'est la vie....

Here's my predictions.

1- Greg Zaun and Chris Woodward to St. Louisfor a mid-level prospect
2- Reed Johnson to Seattle for Gil Meche

That is all.

Rock on.

Speier to Oakland for a cuttlefish. Or cash/minor prospect/thanks for Menechino.

That's the only trade I predict.

Hey, the Mets just traded Karim Garcia to the Orioles for Mike DeJean. Have two worse players ever been dealt for each other?

Don't forget 1987... September 22, down the stretch, Tigers and Jays battling for the AL East... Cubs trade Dickie Noles to the Tigers for PTBNL. October 23, Detroit sends Noles back to the Cubs to complete the trade.

I'm not sure if Dickie Noles squared is better or worse than Karim Garcia and Mike DeJean, but if we take the careers of Garcia and DeJean as a whole rather than just 2004 in isolation it might be close. :)

Dickie Noles! Now, there's a memory.
_MK - Monday, July 19 2004 @ 10:14 PM EDT (#49396) #
Okay, what the hell... With a minimum of analysis, I'll predict:

-Gregg Zaun and a no-name A-ball pitcher (not a real prospect) to CWS for Arnie Munoz
-Terry Adams to Oak for Graham Koonce
-Kerry Ligtenberg to SF for cash
-Ted Lilly to Min for Mike Restovich and Boof Bonser

Delgado doesn't waive his no-trade... Batista isn't dealt (Min won't trade Morneau)... Catalanotto never gets healthy enough for anyone to want him... Speier sticks around for 2005... No market for Phelps so he's not dealt at least until the off-season.

M.

I will throw one guess out there...

Justin Speier to the Cubs for prospect Brendan Harris.

I had to look up the exact dates, but I remembered the deal and the year... Sad, huh? :)

I don't think that we'll see anything, but NFH and Moffatt seem rather protective of that pick, so...

Ligtenberg to the Cleveland for a bag of balls.

A couple of IFs:
1) Myers gets healthy quick, I see Zaun departing.
2) Delgado decides to waive his No-Trade clause, he's off.

Marlins and Dodgers are the popular picks, and I don't think we'll get an major-leaguers or near-top prospects back.

Jumping back a bit, I had said I wanted to change my prediction to adams going to the cubs for a ptbnl but I really meant going to the A's as I had previously indicated... sorry for the confusion

3 trades:
Cat to Oakland for PTBNL
T Adams to StL for PTBNL
Speier to Minn for PTBNL

My predictions

Cat to St. Louis for prospect
Terry Adams to Boston for a bag of balls
Delgado waives his no trade clause and goes to LA for a rehabbing Greg Miller (Jays still pay most of Delgado's salary).

Moffatt, when I saw that you included Shadow's Tosca-and-Unicorn-for-Ken-Macha trade in the list I spit my coffee all over the place.

Adams pretty much anywhere but Toronto.

That's what they call some of that wishful thinking.

By the way, I just read the part in Chasing Steinbrenner where Jeff Tam approached Tosca after a tough loss wearing nothing but shaving cream head-to-toe and said "I'm your white knight" and now I feel kinda bad for giving him a hard time last year.

He didn't pitch great for us, but he sounds like he was a scream in the clubhouse.

Heheheh. I wasn't sure if shadow was serious or not.

I still can't figure out how the Jays are going to trade away *my* magic unicorn. Unless they engineer some sort of unicorn for Hazel Mae trade with my organization. Unfortunately, I think my boss (Hannah) might veto such a deal. :)
_Charles F - Tuesday, July 20 2004 @ 02:07 PM EDT (#49408) #
Twins fans are dreading the trade of Morneau; but if Terry Ryan is willing, how about Batista and Orlando Hudson for Morneau. Then again, Batista just signed a contract, so it wouldn't exactly be in good faith to move him...

It's not your magic unicorn. You said, "I'd like a magic unicorn that craps M&Ms." Clearly you don't have the rights to such a unicorn yet. I would be willing to send you one for a pink gargoyl and a hobbit to be named later.

unicorn for Hazel Mae trade with my organization

Moffatt, the Hazel Mae talk is in the Roundup thread. Get it right!
_Spicol - Thursday, July 22 2004 @ 12:01 PM EDT (#49411) #
Hey, I missed all of the trade speculation. Let me throw it my two cents, none of it likely:

1) Terry Adams and a B-pitching prospect to Texas for Kevin Mench.

2) Chris Gomez to some National League Central team for pictures of Lindsey Lohan and some 29-year old AA catcher who has never played in the majors.
_Lefty - Thursday, July 22 2004 @ 07:55 PM EDT (#49412) #
I see Spicol has picked up on the Mench idea before I have but I will throw my twist on it. I honestly don't think Adams does this deal so, as posted in todays game thread, Lilly for Mench as the principles, plus the Jays throw in the PTBNL.

Add Mench to the OF mix and you have way more pop in the lineup. Sparky become the forth OF and pinch hitter/runner thus offers the team true value. If Delgado walks at leat 2/3 of the power loss is covered. It would allow Cat to take over first possibly instead of going to the free agent market for overpriced over the hill talent.

Put it in the bank.

There goes my only prediction out the window.
