I'm coming to you this afternoon from the press box, gang. It's my season opener! YAY!

Which means I'll be a little busy during the course of today's action, but I'll check in between ininngs and try to pass along any juicy inside info.

Especially anything that could cause Dr Prison Fence to call his lawyer...

Roy Halladay and David Wells this afternoon. First place is on the line! Five teams are locked in a humungous struggle for the early season lead!

Here was supposed to be your lineups, hot off the press. Imagine my surprise when I got to the RC and discovered that most of the press box telephones aren't working. See what happens when a communications company takes over... communications.

So I spent most of the last hour and a half trying to find a phone line that wasn't dead and wasn't in use. Managed this about six minutes before first pitch.

So I'm just now beginning to notice my surroundings...

Anyone know off the top of their head if and where I could get an internet radio feed for the game this afternoon? I'm at my damn girlfriend's house this weekend and she doesn't get either RSN or TSN, for shame. Tried looking at the Fan 590 schedule, but it seemed they were broadcasting ESPN Radio this afternoon. Thanks.

OK...I didn't this coming.

I'm watching the Red Sox feed on Extra Innings, and when they returned from commercial, the kids' choir was singing O Canada. The camera panned across the various Blue Jays, most of whom were respectfully standing with the caps over their hearts.

Gregg Zaun, on the other hand, was singing along. In French!!!

I guess anyone can spot the ex-Expo.

I thought Doc had a great approach that inning. He got way out in front of every hitter. He'll give up some singles today, but he looks sharp.

I didn't mind his walk to Ortiz, since first base was open and he nearly got strikeouts on both ball 2 (check swing) and ball 4 (tough call).

Gv27 mentioned that Koskie can now have ketchup flavoured chips now that he's back in Canada. That was my favourite flavour of chips when I was a kid.

Doc should be happy to have the slower carpet and a pretty good infield. O-dog should be a gold glover this year; John McDonald could be if he could hit. Koskie and Hinske are pretty handy with the leather too.

Wells is laying them in there belt high....3 homeruns in a row. Couldn't happen to a better guy.

Orlando was 0 for 5 yesterday, recorded the last out in the 9th and 0 for 2 today on infield hits. I hope he is not heading into a slump.

No more fireworks after home runs his year...

Doc is looking really sharp. His fastball is really moving, although it seems that helps the lefties slap it the other way. Great stuf so far though.

Hinske has wonderfully soft hands at first. He looks a world apart from his form at third. A play yesterday where he had to grab a line drive just by his right knee and today on a bouncer by Ortiz he looked amazingly smooth.

I think we've found ourselves a keeper at first.

The roof is closed.

Now that I've calmed down about the bloody phone lines, let's have a look around.

Everything seems much much brighter. (That's in the hallways and lounges as well, where it's as if they pulled out the 60 watt bulbs and replaced them all with 200 watt bulbs. It used to be kind of dark and sedate...) Same thing with the field. The effect of the ribbon, the scoreboards on the outfield walls is to brighten the room. Even the old digital clock below the hotel windows has got newer and brighter bulbs.

Is it a bit like a casino? Oh, maybe. But you can't go retro in this building. Best to go the other way entirely.

Every visual screen looks way way better. The new scoreboard is much cleaner and crisper. Everything very bright and shiny and colourful.

As for the turf - it doesn't look like grass. It looks like a carpet. A nice, thick comfy carpet. Whereas the old turf looked, and played, more like lineoleum. And my, does the ball slow down on it, compared to the old stuff.

Oh yes! The new Media Guide actually has colour photographs inside. Each player, each official. Very impressive.

Now just bring back the free beer and I'll really be impressed.

Playing small ball today? Not so much.

Just checked the ESPN stats and was amazed to see that the Jays are tied for second in the AL in runs, but through 4.5 games their hitters have walked 9 times and hit 9 home runs. Incredible. Imagine how many runs the team would have scored if 7 of them hadn't been solo jobs.

I feel bad for Halladay losing his W here. Schoeneweis shouldn't have been given a 3rd chance - seems like someone on the Jays coaching staff likes the platoon advantage a little too much.

And on the muffed double play, Jeter would have gotten that call.

gv27,

I noticed you asked Pat Tabler about his first major league hit. I'd love it if you'd ask him if he knows who gave up his first major league homerun (answer: Dick Ruthven).

And here's a really tough one: Tabler's first RBI - off whom and the runner he drove in (answer: off Joe Edelen; drove in Jerry Morales).

Manny's throw to get Adams at 3B was perfect. Absolutely perfect, one hopped to about 6 inches to the left of the third sac about 6 inches off the ground. And it beat him there by no more than 2 feet. Him going for 3B was absolutely the right move. It was just a rare moment of really bad luck. Or good luck for Manny.
Pistol - Saturday, April 09 2005 @ 04:06 PM EDT (#110229) #
Ok, maybe it's different when you're at the game, but the OF scoreboards look awful, and apparently are a distraction.

Here's a solution!

No colored background. You should be able to see the scores just the same, but it won't be as obnoxiously bright.

-----

The last couple games have shown how nice the Jays' roster construction has been.

Random comments.

Positive:

- Alex Rios is hitting the ball with authority.

- Shea Hillenbrand is proving to be one of Toronto's best hitters.

- Corey Koskie looks to have finally found his swing.

- Russ Adams is more and more impressive everytime I see him play.

- All the homeruns are unexpected but very welcome.

- Vinny Chulk was very impressive last night in relief. Same with Jason Frasor today.

- The starting pitching has been solid.

- The renovations to Rogers Centre look great.

- Eric Hinske looks slick over at first.

Negative:

- Orlando Hudson looks lost from both sides of the plate.

- John Gibbons has made some questionable bullpen moves. (I thought Dave Bush had another inning in him last night.)

- Brandon League probably should've started the year in Syracuse in favour of Justin Miller.

- Gabe Gross hasn't carried his spring into the regular season thus far.

All in all, I'm very pleased with the play of the Jays and I hope we can keep it up for the rest of the season.

Speaking of Roster Contruction, what's the move that is being made right now to open up a spot for Ted Lilly to come off the DL for tomorrow's start?
Stellers Jay - Saturday, April 09 2005 @ 04:13 PM EDT (#110232) #
"I thought Dave Bush had another inning in him last night"

I'd question that Bush had much left last night. He had thrown 84 pitches when he was hooked and I'd say the first 50 - 60 of those were in very high pressure situations. His pitch count couldn't have been any higher than 100 last night anyways. The difficuly he had in the first 3 innings coupled with being amped up for opening night, I think the move was made at the right time. Obviously, the result wasn't there, with the way League pitched, but I think Gibbons made the right move.
Rob - Saturday, April 09 2005 @ 04:23 PM EDT (#110233) #
I think Gross will be sent down, but I don't want a seven-man bullpen. Gibby's using his bench and his relievers very well so far, and throwing another pitcher in there won't work.

Thoughts from todays game:

- Good thing Adams base running blunder didn't cost the Jays a W. It was a one run lead at the time, with one out, and Hudson/Wells were due up. A golden rule is that you never want to make an out at 3B, especially in a tight game.

- I was very impressed with Koskie's AB in the 8th inning. Halama had just come into the game and had Koskie at his mercey with a 0-2 count, and then the rest of the AB went like this: Ball, Foul, Ball, Foul, Ball, Foul, Foul, Ball to draw the walk.

- The D was brutal for the Sox in the 8th. Bill Mueller should have been able to start a DP but had trouble with the ball. Renteria misplayed a hopper up the middle.

- Boomer was pissed after he got pulled. He kept on shaking his head as he was walking to the dugout, it looked like he might have been cussing too.

- Not the best game from Doc, but the bullpen picked him up.

- Hudson looks overmatched at the plate right now.

- Hillenbrand's been the best Jays hitter so far. I'm impressed.

- Your two MLB RBI leaders are Matsui and Going Going Zaun, with 8 each.

- I'm still not a fan of those OF videoscreens, and I'm sure Damon agress with me.

Dan - Saturday, April 09 2005 @ 04:47 PM EDT (#110235) #
I think those outfield wall screens are embarassing.

First of all, why reward your young gold glove centerfielder with a deathtrap out where he patrols? The Jays should be building a park that caters to their team. Any advantage the Jays have in outfield defense is weakened if the players can't perform to the best of their ability.

Wells doesnt like the track and he doesnt like the boards. I haven't been to a game yet, but on TV those screens are very annoying whenever they're flashed in my face. Instead of enjoying a view of the outfielders converging on a fly, I squint and watch the outfielders trying to find the ball in blind daze.

The screen allmost took out the cat last night and it did take out Damon. Over at the the Sons of Sam Horn they're having a good laugh at our expense, and I don't blame them. We took a step forward with the new turf. But something needs to be done about those video boards.

GrrBear - Saturday, April 09 2005 @ 04:52 PM EDT (#110237) #
To be fair, Ron, it took a perfect throw from Manny Ramirez to get Adams at third. Even Major League outfielders don't make perfect throws all the time - I think the risk is worth the reward. Especially since we keep hearing how this year's Jays is going to have to scratch out runs one at a time. :)
A - Saturday, April 09 2005 @ 04:52 PM EDT (#110238) #
Good thing Adams base running blunder didn't cost the Jays a W. It was a one run lead at the time, with one out, and Hudson/Wells were due up. A golden rule is that you never want to make an out at 3B, especially in a tight game.

That was no mistake. As aptly pointed out by a couple posts above, Ramirez has a lazy work ethic in the field and with one out, having a guy at third is far more appealing than potentially having to rely on getting him there using your second out. This time it didn't work out but more often than not, I'd bet it does work out.

As well, the golden rule you speak of, Ron, applies to making the first or third out. Why? Because if you're at second with no outs, even advancing on a couple of outs gets you home. With two outs, why take your team out of the whole inning when a single would probably score you from second or third? Adams definately took the right risk.

TorontoDan - Saturday, April 09 2005 @ 04:56 PM EDT (#110239) #
Great win by the Jays. I like this surge in power hitting :)The back to back to back home runs were just a sight to behold.

(on the screens) If they're not going to tear them down or turn them off, at least make them a non-neon color and put more crucial information on them. Away scores (especially during a 1:05 game in April) are pointless. Put the ball/stike/out count there as well as pitch speed, or put something relevant and tastefully done there instead of this green mess.
Jdog - Saturday, April 09 2005 @ 04:56 PM EDT (#110240) #
I think somebody is misinformed on the golden rule. I thought it was never make the first or third out on 3rd base.

Anyways a great game. I am impressed with the jays ability to get those runners in from third with less than two outs , F-Cat and Zaun had two good at bats accomplishing that today.

I too think Jason Frasor is underrated, Out of all the relievers back there that is who I trust the most. he was great last year until he hit the wall and all of a sudden started walking people. I'd like to see him be the 8th inning guy , or the guy who Gibbons relies on the most.

Also 1 Question is the game on tv tommorrow?

Great game today. Each of the games so far have been fun to watch, and it's shaping up to be a very exciting/interesting team to follow throughout the year.

A few constructive (I hope) criticisms for Jamie:
- grounders have been referred to as "slappers" a bit too often (like Faulds' old "excuse me swing" phrase)

- the stories and background details have definitely been a welcome addition to the broadcasts, as have been the questions directed to Tabler. However, I think that you have to be a bit more judicious in when you tell them. For example, the story about Frasor's family is interesting, but in the top of the 8th with the Jays clinging to a one-run lead and the heart of the Sox order up, I think that it would've been better to focus on the situation at that point.

- as was mentioned previously, don't worry about the odd slip-up. The fact that you've corrected yourself is all that concerns me as a viewer. When broadcasters/analysts ignore their mistakes it is much more frustrating. Your attention to detail has already earned my trust.

Overall, very nice work. Combined with the improvements at the park, the broadcasts have been very good.

Some humour in Lee Sinins' daily email...

3) Redsox CF Johnny Damon suffered a bad cut on his left elbow after slamming into some protective plexiglass in front of a scoreboard at the place that the BlueJays play in. He suffered the cut in the 2nd inning, stayed in the game until the 9th, needed 6 stitches and might miss a game or two.

...

In these days of constant corporate renaming of stadiums, it's probably much easier these days to just refer to stadiums as the place that XXX play in, rather than mention corporate named stadiums and have the overwhelming majority of the audience not be able to remember which stadium that name belongs to. I can make exceptions for stadiums which entrenched names like Busch Stadium.

4) The National Guard is in negotiations to have RFK Stadium turn into the place that the Nationals play in.
A - Saturday, April 09 2005 @ 05:20 PM EDT (#110244) #
"I too think Jason Frasor is underrated"

I would agree with that (I think it has to do with the opposition believing he's really a 12 year old ;-). However, last year Frasor had issues with stamina. He seemed to lose his touch as the season progressed. I'm not sure if he's done work in the off season to improve his endurance but otherwise that means Frasor needs to make fewer or shorter outings this season. I'd hate to lose him to the DL or consistent ineffectiveness as a result of over work -- when Frasor's healthy/rested, he can mirror some of the best relievers in the game.

"I think somebody is misinformed on the golden rule."

Beat you to it, JDog =)

Jobu will be interested in this. From Jose Melendez's Keys to the Game over at Sons of Sam Horn:

But the confusing BJays roster is no accident. No, no!!! Jose is convinced that BJays GM J.P. Riccardi is trying to compensate for a below average roster by trying to confuse his opponents. He probably figures that if opposing pitchers can’t remember which guy is at the plate, they won’t remember whether to throw him fastballs inside or sliders down and away.

So look for Riccardi to acquire all three Molina brothers before the trading deadline; it’s the logical move, after all.

I assume that Gross will be the player taken off the roster when Lilly is activated. And I can understand the need to get Gross regular ABs.

But Pete Walker hasn't been used at all this year, and a few relievers could have been used more (Chulk & Frasor).

Why not use the roster spot on another position player? The Jays have been really good in the late innings the past 2 games because of their bench. Why limit that? A 7th reliever isn't going to win you a game. An extra position can give you a late inning platoon advantage which could win you a game.

So if not Gross, why not a different lefty OF that could pinch hit if there was a RH reliever that you didn't want Rios or Hillenbrand to face?

Even a RH OF would come in handy. You could pinch hit for Hinske, Hudson, Adams or Zaun/Myers.

Once upon a time I was aghast when teams would regularly have 11 pitchers on the roster.

Now I'm pleasantly surprised, because so many teams have 12 pitchers on the active roster. Invariable one or two of them gather dust waiting to get into a game. When will the madness end?

An absolutely amazing game to watch live and my first of the season.

A small cheer club gathering of only myself and three of my friends in 518 (start heading down there, people!)

Cheer Club Highlights:

-Got pretty near the entire 500 level in on several "Booooooooooooooomeeeeeeeeeeeeeer" chants
-huge noise for the three home runs
-"Haaaaalamalamalamalamalamalama..."
-"woMAAAAAAAANTEI"
-getting the large contingent of red sox fans to shut up with a 500-wide "Let's go Blue Jays" chant that put them to shame. some "let's go Koskie" chants became quite popular as well.

AND... the greatest moment in Cheer Club history in my opinion:

"GOING... GOING... ZAUN!" and immediately after, a grand slam. Amazing timing, and never before have I seen so many people turning to congratulate us on the call. :-)

Of course I'm sure none of it was audible on TV.

As a sidenote - did anyone else notice that until Zaun's grand slam, this was exactly the same as last night's game but with the roles reversed? 6-5, with the 5-run team never leading but always nipping at the leading team's heels...

Of course, we were able to get it done, unlike those red sox.

On another note - Zaun's grand slam was eerily like Chris Gomez's from last year against the Sox - barely making it over the wall, but this time to the exact opposite side of the dome.

This has edged out the "Gomez hit grand slam now" game from last year as the best I have seen live.
robertdudek - Saturday, April 09 2005 @ 06:40 PM EDT (#110254) #
My favourite game from last year (attended in person) was the comeback against the Angels (I think it was in May). It ended when Gomez got in a rundown between third and home, and scored because Bengie Molina peeled off too early and the pitcher Ben Weber (having run to first base because of the groundball to the right side) was late covering home.
Stellers Jay - Saturday, April 09 2005 @ 06:48 PM EDT (#110256) #
I couldn't agree more with you Pistol about the extra bat. I said the same thing in yesterday's game thread. The Jays only have 38 players on the 40 man roster, so they have room for a minor move and it won't cost them anyone off their roster. A "Howie Clark" type 25th man will be of far more use to this team than carrying Pete Walker as the 12th pitcher. In addition, it will get Gross 200 regular at bats in Syracuse and at the first sign of injury to anyone of 7 players (Wells, Rios, Cat, Johnson, Hinske, Hillenbrand, Koskie) he will be back here with full-time at bats.

Donkit R.K.,
I agree with you about Hinske, he's a much better hitter than he showed last year. Everyone seems to forget that all through the minor leagues and during his rookie campaign he was a .275 hitter with pop. As for Hillenbrand, I'd wait to jump on that band wagon. I don't think he'll be kicking around once a big bat becomes available via trade of free agency. He's on my fantasy team though and he's certainly making me happy, for now.

Hey, just home from the game (I stayed for dinner) and I have to say, I love the new dome. Best thing about it? No fireworks!

No fireworks means no smoke! No smoke means no stultifying, toxic air, which makes the whole experience better. Not only did they use to shoot fireworks after home runs, they shot them off to begin the game, and when the dome was closed you had smoke clouding the air from the first pitch. Which was why I and many people stopped going to games when there was a chance the roof would be closed.

No more, and to whoever made that decision, thank you.

Now if somebody could do something about the excess of Red Sox fans, that would be great.

One stupid thing i kind of miss is the weird noises on foul balls. Fireworks were ok when the dome was open, but when it was closed they were way too loud.

It's still too early to make any real judgements...I remember this time last year, people in my fantasy leagues were picking up Kevin Cash.

However it's nice to see the "punchless" Blue Jays hit 4 bombs, and thrash the BoSox pitching...making the fans run around yelling "the sky is falling!"

I had to leave for work around the time Halladay left, so I missed the last part of the game, but from what I saw Halladay pitched better than the boxscore indicates, and gv27 was much better than yesterday. My compliments.

I've been an advocate for keeping Gross up all along. Pete Walker hasn't even been used yet, and Brandon League has looked like he could use more seasoning. Gross will turn 26 this year. Only a year younger than Vernon Wells! The time for Gross to show us what he can do is now. Sending him down to AAA would accomplish nothing.
Jordan - Saturday, April 09 2005 @ 08:52 PM EDT (#110270) #
If the Jays do send Gross down, I'd like to see them find a way to bring Eric Crozier up. His bat would be useful, but his glove even more so -- he can back up in the corner outfield positions and at first base. Gibbons seems intent on using his bench a lot, so the more flexibility he can get, the better: Crozier provides flexibility. To make room, they could send down one of Chulk or Walker, because they don't really need both in the majors at this point.

The absence of the fireworks is a huge step forward -- I'll second the kudos to whoever shelved them. In addition to the smoke, the bits of confetti-like debris they scattered on the field was annoying. And frankly, it was embarrassing and amateurish -- hey guys, it's just a home run; don't get so excited. As Bear Bryant said, when you reach the end zone, try to look like you belong there.

Now if somebody could do something about the excess of Red Sox fans, that would be great.

Hey, every paying Red Sox fan helps the Jays close the revenue gap with Boston. :-)

The other plus of no fireworks is that you can really hear the crowd noise instead of the booming of the fireworks.

Can I also add my two cents about the outfield scoreboards? I don't know why they're there. They don't really do anything with them. I for one have never been all that interested in out of town scores when I'm at a game, and unless I'm missing something, that's all they seem to use them for.

I suspect somebody thought it'd be a great idea, a nifty new doo-dad for the dome. But it's a doo-dad that they could have done with out.

Just got back to Kingston after watching the game in the second row along the left field foul line.
A couple of comments:
1) First play of the game was Reed Johnson almost making a fantastic play right in front of me. Props to Reed for getting right up, and winging that ball in without batting an eye.
2) Some Bosox fan called Ortiz's homer, right before the at bat. Once Roy went down 2-0, i had a bad feeling until he was talked to by arnsberg(or gibbons, cant see that far) AND the bad feeling went away, as i assumed he was told to take it easy, and walk ortiz. Why not go for another groundball from Millar. Bad feeling returned shortly after.
3) Manny did indeed make a quick and perfect throw to nail Adams, not a base running error, just bad luck. Manny is usually much lazier/crappier.
4) After the game I was surprised at the goading between sox and jays fans. Take it easy guys, its not worth getting jumped after the game.
5) There are a buttload of loud sox fans in town.
6) All of the Jays homeruns seemed like they were 5 feet over at most.
Went with my girlfriend, and in the middle of me answering her question of "how often do back to back jacks happen, and how often do back to back to back happen" Shea showed her something special
Andrew S - Saturday, April 09 2005 @ 10:08 PM EDT (#110276) #
A lot of people have commented that Manny was in left field throwing out Adams, which I think takes away from just how perfect the throw was. No left fielder in the league nails him more than 2 times out of ten when throwing in that situation, the throw is the best positioned I've seen out of the outfield in a long time.
sweat - Saturday, April 09 2005 @ 10:28 PM EDT (#110277) #
It was definately a perfect throw.
I'm curious as to how that Adams pulled of the bag play looked on TV. Looked pretty obvious that he was pulled off at the dome itself.

A couple of odd notes from around the leagues...

The Braves are 4-1. They've given up more runs than they've scored, but still... I told ya so.

The White Sox are 4-1. I... let's move along shall we?

Only one team in the majors has scored more runs than the Fighting Jays - and that would be Detroit? Wow, it is early.

Our old friend Carlos Delgado hit his first Marlin homer - in the bottom of the ninth, with his team trailing 2-1. Nice timing. Then they go and lose in the 10th.

And finally... poor Willie Randolph. Finally gets to manage, and gets this...

That game was really awesome.

I brought the cowbell right behind Vernon Wells in centre field and we had some 1st inning player chanting from the whole section ala Yankee Stadium.

Jays fans outnoised and obviously outnumbered the Sox fans. Sox fans dress themselves up more and look more in number than they actually are.

Although it is only the second game, the atmosphere inside the Dome is electric and Jays fans are getting loud.

The clips on TSN showed the fans jumping around and yelling, something that was virtually unheard of even after a win last year.

I found and usher that likes my flag and won't call security :)

I've heard enough complaining about the video wall. Don't you think it's neat that we actually have a naturally occuring obstacle in our outfield? Not like the ridiculous intentional obstacle they built in Houston with that stupid hill. Vernon's a Gold Glover, that means he's just gonna have to learn to be the best in the American League at playing that wall. Don't forget that the Blue Jays get to hit the ball over there too. And with our outfield being familiar with the video wall, that gives us a distinct home-field advantage.

I applaud the Godfrey group from turning away from the retro-crazy fad and just going with what they had. The SkyDome was a marvel of modernity, they've just given it an update.

I'm sure what they're using the screens for now won't be that way forever. Don't forget how quickly they put everything together. When did they buy the stadium? Two months ago? I can't believe they got everything together for Opening Day. I'm sure for them it was a "get it done" kind of proposition and they weren't fussing over the details. That will come.

And the race for Opening Day makes sense. I thought I'd have trouble calling it the "Rogers Centre". But actually, this stadium now bears little similarity to last year's SkyDome; SkyDome suddenly does seem like an outdated phrase.

Paul Godrey and everyone he had on this deserves the most sincere of congratulations on a job well done.

Robertdudek: Dick Ruthven, eh? Interesting. And I would never have guessed Tom Griffen as Tabler's first hit. I'll ask him about Ruthven, though.

Justin: excellent points. You're right; I was leaning on "slapper" a little too much, as it comes to mind immediately after the ball kicks the crushed rubber off the new turf. Consider it noted. Traditionally, I'm not a big fan of unnecessary chatter in times of tension and drama. On that occasion, I tried not to step on the importance of Frasor's task, while attempting to put a face on him only at times of extended inactivity. I appreciate the feedback though. Be assured I'll rarely clutter intriguing moments with stories, preferring to let the pictures and sound speak for themselves.

Wrigley: brick and ivy!

Hey, maybe they should increase their homefield advantage by interspersing poison ivy amidst the regular ivy (they'd have to have an antidote ready for when their players occasionally crashed into the wall).

Seriously though, if the neon oufield signs are a hazard the league will probably step in and the Jays will have to do something about it.

I'm full of things to say today...

How do people feel about Tim Langdon? I like his voice but the reason he was brought in is still unknown to me. He sounds similiar to Murray Eldon and speaks with less enthusiasm as well. If the Jays were aiming to appeal to younger crowds then I'm not too sure they've found the best fit.

I painfully miss hearing Orlandoooooooooo when O-Dog comes to bat.

Maybe construct it of sugar-glass so that the player goes right through it. Now that would be cool! ;-)

I agree 100%, VBF. Langdon just doesn't have that enthusiasm that Murray had - I cannot at all see the logic to the change they made.

I loved the atmosphere of this game. At times, it seemed like a footy match with the chants and whatnot. Dueling chants were effectively neutralized by some guys in my section starting a YANKEES SUCKS chant. Ah, mutually agreeable terms.

That wave went on forever. It seemed like the Halama vs Koskie matchup lasted just as long, although in reailty it was about even. Also, I really hate the wave.

It sucked that my team lost, but the Jays showing consistant offensivc spark, coupled with the addition of actual crowd noise, hopefully means that fans will come back for more games and make more noise.

Also, I'm throughly disappointed in myself that I didn't think to deploy my "19-93!" chant until we had exited and were on Front St. :-)

I completely agree. The lack of enthusiasm was the second thing I noticed - first being the ugly screen in centre field

Also, where are the "Charge" chants? Or the icons they put on the Jumbo Tron when someone hit a homerun, or walked, or was taken out of the game.

It seems to me like all the fun has been taken out with the Rogers Centre.

Great Games though. No complaints, except for the Boston Fans who would not shut up the whole game. If I have to hear a boston accent yelling "Put on some skates!" one more time, I might lose it.

I believe he retired. I know he was honored by Bell and Gaston before the home opener.

The is my first time on the net since attending the opener and today's game, and I'd have to agree with most of the sentiments expressed in the last two days.

I love the new Rogers Centre, from the turf to the new video scoreboards that replaced the old out-of-town ones. They had a few kinks (with MPHs or the sound yesterday), but they look quite good. The ones in the outfield, I don't mind but given the player complaints, we'll see how they develop. The no fireworks is good, the ton of information on the new Jumbotron is good and the video highlights yesterday were good, including the player introductions for everyone, which I really enjoyed. The idiot fans with their idiotic behaviour almost ruined an otherwise very enjoyable game, and I thought security should have dealt with them more harshly. Try to make a few of them an example by kicking them out, and hope that stops the rest of them. Instead, they did nothing.

Today's game was an outstanding one to attend. I was a never a fan of a 7 man bullpen at all, and each game does more and more to convince me that this an idea which will hurt us. Gibbons likes to use the bench for platoon advantages, understandably, and giving him an "extra" bat like Gross, Crozier or Mottola would be much more valuable than Chulk or League or Walker.

Hate to disappoint you Paul, but a chant like that would succeed only in conjuring up warm glorious images for any Jays fan who's old enough to remember 1993. You might even get a witty retort - get back to us when you've won back-to-back Series, baby! (that's my Dick Vitale impression) :-)

It does seem strange though. If he was fired then why would Rogers honour him before the home opener with a presentation in front of 50,000 fans (and bring Cito and George Bell in for good measure), and if he was fired after all these years of service why would he agree to participate in such a ceremony?

Wrigley: brick and ivy!

But at least uniformly so. The outfielders know what they're dealing with for the entire fence. In Toronto, you've got a combination of padding and cast iron, I mean plexiglass. While pursuing a ball, the outfielders have to be able to figure out what they can and can't do based on where on the fence line they find themselves.

brels - Sunday, April 10 2005 @ 09:10 AM EDT (#110310) #
Just another comment on those stupid screens in the outfield wall.

I know Wrigley is a possible comparable, at least the Ivy provides a uniform backround as noted by others.

This overly bright non-uniform backround impacts the play, the outfielders can't "pick up" the ball when it is the line of sight with the screen and that is just not right. That plus the fact that it is hard plexiglass that is scaring outfielders from going to the wall on the run for a ball over the head means they need to be removed.

Can you imagine something like this is another sport? How about advertising screens underneath a football field that distract the receivers? Or bright screens in the boards of a hockey rink that are in the goalie's line of sight for shots from the sides of the rink.

(I really like all the other changes they have made)

Just to be clear, they were suspended for violating the drug policy, not steroid policy. While it could have been steroids, it could also have been a large number of other things -- amphetamines, ephedra, all manner of other banned supplements and stimulants. I believe in Tablado's case he's saying that it was an over-the-counter supplement that he (mistakenly) thought was acceptable.

RE: Murray Eldon

He was forced to retire. Because the team was headed in a "new direction". So this new announcer guy must look really cool, if that's a comfort. His voice sounds very similar to Eldon, without the pizzaz.

Anybody notice on Friday night when O-Dog came to the plate with the bases loaded the new guy attempted an "Orlandoooooo..."; it went off half-cocked; pretty sad.

The ceremony was because they know they have Murray a raw deal.

I sat in 543 on Opening Night with Theo and Mrs. Hank, and then I was in the camera bay yesterday. Thoughts:

-I like the outfield scoreboards. Hopefully they'll start showing the baserunner information soon. When the Dome is open, they'll be much less obviously bright -- they'll be pretty equal with the sunlight. Of course, the Jays only play two out of six home games during the day. I wonder if Damon caught himself on one of the bolts?

-New JumboTron's viewing angle is significantly better -- we could see and read it from 543, which is beside it! All the boards are better in every way.

-I like that they didn't try to lead the crowd when the crowd didn't need to be led.

-The whole place looks great. I was noticing that with the ribbons on the front of the decks that concrete was virtually impossible to see.

-The new turf looks way better in person than on TV. Oddly, I can't get the colour of it to come up right in my photographs from yesterday -- it comes out looking like how it looks on TV. Must be a combo of the colour of the lights and the dye they've used to colour it that just doesn't read right on a CCD. Having read numerous horror stories about guys who switched their photographic studios to digital only to discover that they couldn't reproduce the specific colour of just one specific sweater during a catalog shoot (with all the other ones coming out just fine), this is definitely not impossible.

-The sound is massively improved. The system is no longer harsh and grating, which means that it can still be loud but not be painful. After some hiccups in the levels on Opening Night, things seemed pretty smooth on Saturday.

-The lineup at Gate 14 on Opening Night was 20 minutes long. Crazy!

-Theo attended both games and only cried once: Hinske driving in a run on Opening Night and the crowd going wild. I think it startled him. He and I went for a walk on the concourse and then went back out to the game, and he was perfectly fine until he fell asleep in the seventh inning.

How can you say Murray Eldon got a raw deal? He had years of gainful employment and the Jays honoured him in a pregame ceremony and gave him a freakin' WORLD SERIES RING! How is that a raw deal? If that's the definition of a raw deal, count me in for a couple.

I will admit Langton has sounded quite similar so far. But give him time. That's a job that you need to grow into. The biggest difference I heard on opening day was having him yell "Come on, make some noise" and similar cheerleading stuff. Perhaps that's the direction they're headed in, and I can't see Eldon fitting that bill.
