The Rogers Centre may get a little more crowded than usuual for this mid-week set as Boston comes to town, likely accompanied by a sizable contigent of Boston fans making the trip for the series. There probably won't be as many as there usually is for a weekend series, but there will still be a good number of loud Bostonians in the stadium.

Will the Jays have enough fans present to create noise to rival or exceed the Red Sox fans is the real question. Hopefully there are a good number there on $2 Tuesday to see David Bush battle Boomer Wells, Toronto's favourite lost son. On Wednesday Gustavo Chacin faces off against Bronson Arroyo and the Doctor gets the call on Thursday against Wade Miller. Who, if anyone, is going up to the games?

Use this thread to arrange any meetings and so forth.

I'm going to all 3: 518?
Jobu - Tuesday, May 24 2005 @ 10:24 AM EDT (#117534) #
518 indeed.

I'm trying to go to tonights game, but if I can't make it I should be at one of the other two. Who's got the K's?

Looks like we'll be seeing Gross this series...bluejays.com reports that Cat has been placed on the bereavement list and that Gross has been called up to replace him.
I gather our prayers should be with Cat's family
Pistol - Tuesday, May 24 2005 @ 12:54 PM EDT (#117548) #
The bereavement list requires Catalanotto to remain inactive for a minimum of three games and a maximum of seven.
Paul S - Tuesday, May 24 2005 @ 02:53 PM EDT (#117560) #
Is 518 the preferred section for Bauxites?

I guess I'll be there as the short guy wearing Sox gear. :)
Dr. Zarco - Tuesday, May 24 2005 @ 02:58 PM EDT (#117563) #
Does anyone know what happened with regards to Cat? It must be pretty serious to make such a pro sit for multiple games.
TorontoDan - Tuesday, May 24 2005 @ 03:15 PM EDT (#117565) #
I'll be at Thursday's game.
VBF - Tuesday, May 24 2005 @ 03:18 PM EDT (#117567) #
I can't make it to Tuesday, however there will cowbell in the building for Thursday and maybe Wednesday. But Wednesday might be a stretch.

I have to say I'm a bit worried about Bush tonight.

Bush has been depicted as "struggling" so far this year, but here's a split which may suggest otherwise, while not providing optimism for tonight....

Dave Bush

VS. BOSTON: 2gms, 7.0ip, 3hr, 2.14whip, 12.86era
VS. OTHER: 6gms, 38.2ip, 5hr, 1.03whip, 3.26era

Hopefully the Jays' bats can abuse Wells as per usual, because I'm definitely worried about Bush tonight.

Someone else has got to invest on another cowbell. We should at least have one at all the games between all of us. Long and Mcquaide has one for $11.

Any word on the drum situation, Tyler? Is it a security thing or a drum thing, since I might be able to come up with a drum. Even a floor tom would make some considerable noise.
TorontoDan - Tuesday, May 24 2005 @ 04:48 PM EDT (#117573) #
I can easily get my hands on a cowbell....It's just getting it in that might be the problem. You literally stuff your two in your pockets as you go in....I'm not sure what I'd do. You usually bring two bells, and that's good, but I agree, we need more.
Jobu - Tuesday, May 24 2005 @ 05:07 PM EDT (#117575) #
We're still awaiting permission from Rogers Centre to see if we can bring any form of O-Drum back again this year. Apparently they got some complaints from namby pambies last season. Cowbells and signage should keep the fun going for now though.

Wednesday is a maybe and I hope to be at Thursday's game.
VBF - Tuesday, May 24 2005 @ 06:05 PM EDT (#117584) #
Bad news. I won't be to tomorrow's game, but I will be at Thursday's game.

I'm becoming less concerned with the security gastapo this year. For example, I was carrying my cowbell in my hand when I went in through the turnstiles. I concealed it in my hand, but when the guard went to search by bag, I accidently dropped it on the solid concrete. The cowbell's noise rang through the whole ramp system. I nonchalantly told the guard it was my cowbell, and expecting the worst, he replied back "Cool!".

Also, Friday will be another "141" day. Just lemmey know if you're coming and your 500 level ticket will be just fine. It should be less busy this Friday.

VBF, which location did you get it from? I'll be able to hit the one on Bloor St tomorrow, and if everything goes according to plan, there should be a cowbell at tomorrow night's game.

TorontoDan - Tuesday, May 24 2005 @ 11:24 PM EDT (#117614) #
He went to the one in Mississauga. I might go to the one on Bloor in the next few days, so tell me how that works out, Alex (price, stock)
Keith Talent - Wednesday, May 25 2005 @ 06:28 PM EDT (#117692) #
I think I might like a cowbell too. What I'd really like is to get a Dave Stieb set up like that dude last night. Bad-ass cop moustache, mullett, powder blue uni: sweet.

Anyhow, boy am I sorry I had to bail last night. I caught the Johnson walk-off just as I was pulling into my driveway. Anyhow, probably for the best. I have a bad earache and swollen tonsils or something weird. I hope to be back in action Thursday night.

Do you really need to sneak the cowbells into Rogers Centre?
VBF - Wednesday, May 25 2005 @ 06:45 PM EDT (#117695) #
Well, I had mine confiscated last year when they found it in my bag. That was in gate 6. Beware of the man with the 70s tinted glasses.

I've come to realize that unless you don't have glass in your hand, they don't care what you're holding--just the stuff in your bag. So, if you walk in with a cowbell in your hand and act normal, they won't even notice you.

By the way, if you go to Long and McQuaide, their defective drumsticks are at a really discounted price. Make sure to buy the "mashers" since they are the biggest and strongest.

Watching tonights NESN broadcast on Rogers and I see Hazel Mae doing a sports update. She finishes with this zinger.."A warm night in Toronto, that must be an oxymoron".

Ouch, how soon they forget.

I'll be at the game on Saturday, up in 518.
Alex Obal - Wednesday, May 25 2005 @ 10:41 PM EDT (#117714) #
Sadly, the cowbell hunt was unfruitful. The Long & McQuade at Bloor and Ossington was sold out of cheap cowbells like VBF's. The least expensive ones available were $25 and quite small. I passed.

I tried to hit Steve's Music Store on Queen, but arrived shortly after 6, just after it closed. I'll try that again tomorrow.

Today's game was thoroughly satisfying. I'm in for tomorrow.
TorontoDan - Wednesday, May 25 2005 @ 10:45 PM EDT (#117716) #
Alex, did you get my email? I sent one to your batter's box account but you haven't replied..just wanted to make sure it was your current one.
Alex Obal - Wednesday, May 25 2005 @ 10:46 PM EDT (#117717) #
I just did.
VBF - Thursday, May 26 2005 @ 03:59 PM EDT (#117796) #
Well, it seems as I just won an award for some musical achievement, and part of it included a $50 gift certificate for Long and McQuaide's.

If you guys want, I can pick up a couple cowbells for you and you guys pay me back the cost. I think they run at about $11.
Named For Hank - Thursday, May 26 2005 @ 04:57 PM EDT (#117800) #
"Some musical achievement", eh? We require details.
Brian B. - Thursday, May 26 2005 @ 05:09 PM EDT (#117801) #
Isn't Mr. Rogers going to allow the Cheer Club to bring cheerleading instruments into his Centre now that he owns it?

I don't understand what atmosphere management wants to create, if not one of fun, excitement and good competition.
VBF - Thursday, May 26 2005 @ 05:13 PM EDT (#117802) #
Details?

Yea, I won the Royal Conservatory Award for Musical Achievement in my graduating class. There ya go. Bottom line is thet I have 50 bucks to spend at a music store and now that I think of it, are there any other percussion instruments (i.e. cowbell, drum) which would be suitable to get the crowd going?
Jobu - Thursday, May 26 2005 @ 05:42 PM EDT (#117803) #
A drum would certainly be ideal but management is dragging their feet with regards to its legality this season. Maybe we should invest in something no other ballpark has seen like a basoon, or flugelhorn.
VBF - Thursday, May 26 2005 @ 05:54 PM EDT (#117806) #
To be honest with you, I have no idea what a fuglehorn is, but certainly something along the lines of a "war" horn wouldn't be bad. We could sound it every time we score a run.

Shofar anyone?
Jobu - Thursday, May 26 2005 @ 06:13 PM EDT (#117809) #
I don't think anyone truly knows what a flugelhorn is, myself included, but the warhorn idea has got legs. Think of like those regal horns that sound before the charge.
VBF - Thursday, May 26 2005 @ 06:33 PM EDT (#117811) #
This is the best I could do:

http://search.ebay.ca/war-horn_W0QQfkrZ1QQfromZR8

There really isn't much to help our cause.
VBF - Thursday, May 26 2005 @ 06:42 PM EDT (#117813) #
I would've thought that there would be some sort of company currently making war horns/bugles. Nobody wants to use something from a couple hundred years ago.

To add to this, Rogers Centre has completely banned plastic horns. Not like it'll stop me though.
VBF - Thursday, May 26 2005 @ 06:48 PM EDT (#117814) #
Now that I think of it, I know a place that would sell these things. Last summer I went to a small store in Niagara-on-the-Lake. This store sells all sorts of native musical instruments and such. I think the name was "30,000 *something*". I bought a diggery-doo from them last year. They sell all sorts of old, native musical/percussional instruments.

Somehting tells me they have a location in downtown Oakville.
TorontoDan - Thursday, May 26 2005 @ 10:30 PM EDT (#117834) #
They've banned plastic horns? C'mon.....those are so innocent. No wonder they have a problem with a drum. Jeez, it's like they're trying to outdo themselves in terms of creating a bad atmosphere. Oh, I'm sorry.....we have the J-Force! I forgot that cheering is best done silently, while spinning on your head.
Joe - Thursday, May 26 2005 @ 10:35 PM EDT (#117836) #
I hate those plastic horns. So piercing. I've said things very much like this before.

Regardless of whether horns are allowed, the Rogers Centre has been jumping this season (or such is my impression). Somehow, people are finding it better to cheer and shout this season, and it's my hypothesis that the relative lack of stupid sound effects contributes to people's loudness.

TorontoDan - Thursday, May 26 2005 @ 10:55 PM EDT (#117838) #
That's a very good post, and a good point about the horns not drawing people in. I agree 100% on that. I just doubt that's why they're banning them, rather, that they're some form of nuisance. The drum was ideal, and as I was saying to the guys at the game today...without that, the "cheer club" has lost a great deal of its identity. I wish we could think up something (besides the lovely cowbell of course) to put ourselves back on the map :)
Craig B - Thursday, May 26 2005 @ 11:43 PM EDT (#117840) #
Incidentally, for us country folk (or anyone not actually living in Toronto), actual cowbells (i.e. intended for putting around the necks of cows) are much better-sounding (clearer and way more carry) than the music-store variety and are available cheap at any feed store or country hardware store. TSC stores are always good.

We've got a couple of them at home, a medium-sized one and a small one, and they sound great.
VBF - Friday, May 27 2005 @ 03:26 PM EDT (#117906) #
I found the horns annoying too, but figured if it was the only way people were going to make noise, so be it.

Now with the new atmosphere the horns are gone and everybody is happy.
