There are places I'll remember
All my life
Though some have changed

John Lennon would have been 65 years old today. I still miss him.

In Houston, Jorge Sosa and Roy Oswalt survived some early struggles and duelled through six innings, with the Astros leading 3-2 on Mike Lamb's third inning homer. The Braves, trailing, then pinch hit for Sosa (who had actually come through with an RBI single earlier in the game). This brought on the Atlanta bullpen, and just as in the first game of this series, that's where it all fell apart for the Braves. Three runs scored before the Braves third reliever of the inning could register an out.

Julio Franco came up with a pinch-hit single off Brad Lidge in the ninth. That would be a new record for oldest player to get a hit in the post-season. He'll try to set a new record tomorrow.

In the late game, that Cardinals chased Woody Williams early, scoring four runs after two were out in the second inning. That was pretty much sealed the Padres' fate: they were down 7-0 before they got their first base hit. To their credit, they didn't roll over and die. They chipped away at the Cardinals' big lead, and by the eighth inning actually had the tying run in the on-deck circle. In the ninth, they brought the tying run to the plate with one out. But Jason Isringhausen retired Brian Giles and Ryan Klesko, to send them home for the year.

I'm pretty sure that the San Diego Padres are the first team in major league history who lost more games than they won if, but only if, you include their post-season games: 82-83.

Someone had to be first...

The Padres now join the Red Sox on the outside. The Padres, the Red Sox... and the twenty-two teams that didn't make it to the dance.

Everybody have a happy Thanksgiving, OK?

I am saddened to report that Tom Cheek has died. It was in the Globe on line, the Fan may well be reporting it even now.

The Blue Jays website now has details, and there is a tribute site set up at http://www.tributetotom.com.

I was lucky enough to be at the game where they "retired" his number 4306. RIP, Tom.

My sons (then 9 & 8) were also lucky enough to be at the Dome the day they honoured Tom.

I can remember hearing Tom broadcasting Expos games with my dad. I listened to him as much as I could every Summer since '77 and my boys and I listened since 2002.

I went to the store this morning and turned on The Fan 590 just as Doug Farraway was doing a tribute to Tom. I sat in the parking lot crying like a baby.

You will be missed, Tom. Rest In Peace.

Thought I'd let everyone know that the Baseball-Reference Website has been updated to include 2005 stats. Now, go check out the Blue Jays and get lost in the numbers.

I don't know Sean Forman, never met him, have exchanged a couple of brief e-mails, but I will say this ...

He is a freak of nature without whom baseball and the Internet would be lost forever. It's October freaking 10th, the first round of the playoffs isn't over yet, and the new stats are up?

If you have not sponsored a page on BBRef yet, PLEASE do so. The guy deserves it. (I have sponsored four, so don't anybody try to call me on that.)

The best baseball reference (no pun intended or necessary) site on the Internet, and it is simply not close.
