Reports indicate that New York Yankees bench coach Joe Girardi has agreed in principle to become the Florida Marlins' new manager.

Girardi joins a group of former Yankee backstops who've managed in the big leagues, including Ralph Houk (1619 wins, three pennants, two titles), Yogi Berra (484 wins, two pennants) and, briefly, Bill Dickey. Joe Torre, of course, was a catcher himself, though never in pinstripes.

There has been a bit of a run on Yankee coaches recently, Will Randolph and Girardi. Was Lee Mazzilli a Yankee coach too?

Girardi is a catcher and they have good track records, he appears to be intense enough, but he is relatively inexperienced. Girardi is retired two years, this must be one of the quickest player to manager transitions in recent times.

Girardi seems like a good guy so I wish him nothing but the best.

I still remember he had to deliver the news to the fans that Daryle Kile had passed away and the game had to be cancelled.

There is another report which says Leo Mazzone is about to leave the Braves to join the Orioles. Apparently he was negotiating with the Yankees as well.

I find it interesting that the Braves would let Mazzone go, and that he would want to leave.

Ouch. Mazzone to the Orioles is worse than him going to the Yankees imo. The Yankees will almost always be contenders no matter who they have, but the Orioles need some smarts to make it and Mazzone could provide that. According to the article R Billie links to Mazzone is friends with the Orioles manager so that explains why he'd go there. Lets hope the Orioles make enough dumb mistakes elsewhere to avoid letting Mazzone set things up too good for them.

It's the ZZ Top Fan Club (Mazzone and Perlozzo).

He's got arms, and he knows how to use them.

As a Blue Jays fan this Mazzone news is the worst news I have heard in quite a while.

Related to baseball, obviously.

Mazzone negotiations hit a snag; may allow Yankees back into race.

Question: The Os already have Ray Miller. How much better is Mazzone?
