So the 2005 Cy Young Award winners have been announced and Bartolo Colon took home the AL award while Chris Carpenter swept to victory in the NL.

Say, that's exactly what Bauxites predicted would happen back in early September. Well done, all!

I am not surprised by the results. I would have voted for Rivera and Clemens. The NL race was close, I thought, with good cases to be made for Clemens, Carpenter and Willis. The AL race was, as far as I was concerned, a contest between Rivera and Santana; I discounted Santana's late season surge somewhat because the Twins were out of the race at that point.

Mike with your talk about xFIP yesterday I decided to take a look at Halladay's and his was like 3.05. Considerably lower than Santana who would have been my choice for AL CY.

Congrats to Chris Carpenter. I have been a huge fan ever since his day as a Jay. I was sad to see him go but understand that it was financially unviable. However, I am glad that he found success elsewhere and found the consistency to the glimpses of brilliance he shown us as a member of the Blue Jays.

Once again congratulations to your Cy Young.

Now 2 of the 3 top blue jay pitching prospects have won Cy Young (Halladay, Carpenter). If Kelvim Escobar ever pull it together and win one, how cool would that be.

If Willis had beat out Carpenter, the Fish Candy would have had *both* Cy Young winners on their team in 2005.

Mind you it didn't seem to help us much.

Why exactly he is not in the BJ's rotation?.
A meager 300k difference in secure money from the Card's offer as i recall...

This is patently false Jabonso.

Carpenter made $3.5 million in 2002. For the Jays to keep him they would have had to offer him arbitration which would mean a payout of minimum $3 million, and possibly up to $5 million for his lost year (2003). St. Louis offered him two years guaranteed but at much lower figures (I thought it was $2 mil total, but BBref says $600,000). Keeping him would have cost the Jays anywhere between $5 million (if Carp felt sorry for them), and $10 million. There is no way the Jays could have kept Carpenter. If you say they could have negotiated before the arbitration deadline, consider this; What possible reason would Carp do this?

NDG, thanks for the information.
I stated "as i recalled".
There was a time when the BJ's did negotiate with Chris, and only offered the minimum, as with Escobar and Delgado, the message was clear: You are NOT part of our plans...
We do not know if he had stayed if the offer were similar to the one from St Louis.
