Kyle 'X' Phillips and Kyle Yates led the way in the minors yesterday.

Syracuse 6 at Columbus 5

The Chiefs rallied for the win in this one. Trailing 5-3 Syracuse got solo HRs from JFG in the 6th and Russ Adams in the 7th. The winning run scored in the 9th inning compliments of a Kevin Barker double. Adams was 2-4 with a walk, Barker had 3 hits including 2 doubles, Mottola had 2 hits including a HR, and Jeff Duncan also had two hits.

On the mound Michael MacDonald had a tough outing giving up 5 runs in 5.2 innings. He struck out 4, walked 2 and continued to get groundball outs - 10 ground outs to 3 fly ball outs. Jim Crowell pitched 2.1 scoreless innings for the win and Blaine Neal picked up the save.

Akron 1 at New Hampshire 2

A David Smith 2 run HR was enough runs for the Fisher Cats to pull out the win. Robinzon Diaz had two hits and a walk.

Kyle Yates pitched his best game of the season giving up no runs and no walks while striking out 7 in 7 innings. Brandon League gave up a run in the 8th on a double, ground out and wild pitch. Game Over Gronk pitched a perfect 9th for the save.

Dunedin 5 at Tampa 6

Kyle Phillips hit another Tuesday HR - a 3 run HR - and went 3-5 on the night. Anthony Hatch also had 3 hits in 6 ABs.

Brandon Magee got the start for the D-Jays and allowed 2 runs in 5 innings. On the night he allowed 5 hits and 4 walks while striking out 2.

Dayton 10 at Lansing 6

An interesting game here. Dayton got out to a 10-0 lead after 7 innings as they got 4 runs in 5.1 innings against starter Nathan Starner. The floodgates then opened on reliever Julio Pinto who gave up 6 runs in 1.2 innings.

But the Nuts didn't give up. They put up a 6 spot in the 8th inning on a walk, single, walk, walk, single, double and sac fly.

Travis Snider returned to the team (perhaps during the game) and went 1-1 with a sac fly.

3 Stars!:
3 - David Smith
2 - Kyle Phillips
1 - Kyle Yates

Some draft links are below. What I find interesting is that many players had a good idea that the Jays were interested in them and/or came to Toronto (or Dunedin) for a work out prior to the draft. It'd be nice if this information was more public prior to the draft. From the articles it sounds like Ahrens, Jackson and Tolisano are all willing to sign.

The Tolisano article is interesting. Apparently at the end of the supplemental round the Jays called him and said they'd take him at 85. But apparently the Nationals also told him they were going to take him (apparently at 67 or 70) but never did.

A bunch of early signings - players in bold are signed - a couple of later round HSers are included in the signings. It looks like McDade might be shifted to 1b now as that's the listed position at BA and the Jays signed the other HS catcher they took in the 13th round.

It sounds like the Jays are holding a mini-camp this week for players before being assigned to teams.  Auburn's season begins next Tuesday.

I looks like Purcey's turn in the rotation was skipped.  Is it due to injury or he needs a rest?

After a rough start in April, Yates has returned to his AFL form. I imagine that he'll be moving up the prospect lists.

Yates' strikeouts are a little lower than wanted, but overall, I will agree with Mike, he has done a nice job rebounding.

Jesus Gonzalez also made his debut last night in Dunedin. He is a SS who has surprising pop, but has had strikeout issues in the past.

Not Jays related, but check out Drew Stubbs line in Dayton.  A high first rounder out of college shouldn't be struggling in Low A like that.

The Reds are probably another team kicking themselves for not taking Lincecum (or Rowell or Snider who are both doing better and are several years younger).

I've never been thrilled with the handling of Gonzalez. He was a third
baseman in the DSL and at Pulaski with a solid bat and power potential.
The Jays moved him to SS at Lansing to fill an organizational need and
his bat went into the can at the exact same time. His defence has been
terrible as well and I have read more than one scouting report that
says he is absolutely not a SS. 'Course his patience at the plate
leaves a lot to be desired, which I'm sure is also partially to blame
for the poor offensive numbers as of late.

MatO - David Purcey's next start is scheduled for Saturday night, 6/16 in Manchester vs. Erie. No word as to why he got skipped. But looking at the fact that he threw a lot of pitches while giving up 10ER in 3+ innings in his last start back on 6/6, its understandable.

From what I heard at the park was that Purcey had his start pushed back due to a tired/dead arm.

A few notes from tonight's loss to Akron. The Fisher Cats lost for the first time this season when they were leading after the 8th leading. Jean Machi was brought in for the save since usual closer Lee Gronkiewicz was called up to the Blue Jays before the game. Machi was, as they say in NASCAR, blowed up. I also heard that League may be on his way to Syracuse tonight or maybe tomorrow night. I'm not sure, sorry.

Aaron Mathews was back in the line up yesterday and went 1-4 with a single in his first AB. Tonight he went 3 for 5 with a single, home run, double w/ two ribbies.  Matty as I call him plays the game hard. All out, all the time. His defense in left is awesome compared to who we had there last year. Hmm, oh that was Lind.

Take Care...

BTW...ex-Blue Jay Cliff Politte, on rehab, started yesterdays game for Akron, but went only one inning. Check out a pic of him here...Hardball Warriors

I'd like to see Purcey moved to Syracuse soon.  He has nice peripherals with 8 K's per game and 4 K's per walk.  His BABIP is a little on the high side at .340.  I'd like to see him starting at Syracuse and if he doesn't cut it, he should be converted by year's end to relief work.  I'm confident he'll have a successful career as a reliever in the majors, it's time to fish or cut bait as a starter.
