  • I think the "Welcome Back Kotter" theme is appropriate as the original Jays logo is back!!   Hey, the song is pretty much the same age as the franchise itself!!

Now I know how Orland Kurtenbach felt when the Vancouver Canucks reintroduced their original hockey stick logo during their unveiling a few years ago.  I remember watching him being interviewed on "The Score" and he was almost in tears, saying he never thought he'd see those logos again in action.  That's how I feel today.  I'm absolutely thrilled to see the return of the powder blue unis, the blue and white cap, and the original logo.

This will mark the first appearance of the powder blues since 2000 when they worn for one game in Minnesota when the Twins wore their retro home unis from the same time period.  All I remember was the Jays lost and Brad Fullmer ripping off his sleeves because they were too tight around his biceps.   It was almost like "The Wild Thing" Rick Vaughn in "Major League" when he was warming up in the pen during spring training.

The Jays did wear their retro white jerseys in 2001 when the White Sox were in town to celebrate the Jays 25th anniversary, a game the Jays won -  just like the opener in '77.  Maybe one day we'll see the return of the World Series jerseys and the dark blue alternate (my all time favourite jersey!).

Oh yeah, the Jays also introduced their new grey road jersey for 2008.  They're not too shabby in my humble opinion.  I'm glad my prediction of the toothpaste logo being on them was totally off the mark.  I wonder if the home and alternate uniforms will eventually be changed to follow the new road uniform in the future.  Anyways, feel free to share your thoughts or memories on the power blues and new road uniform for 2008.

I'm suitably excited for the new uniforms. However, in the press release, it's stated that the retro uniforms will have "Toronto" across the front, while the picture of Vernon shows him in a "Blue Jays" uniform. Bush league.

What's bush league about it?

The article said the blue uniforms would be worn at home on Fridays, The other ones are for road games. It's typical in baseball for the city name to be worn on the road and the nickname or logo on the home uniforms.

I think the press release is just flat out wrong. I'm too young to remember but I believe the baby blue road jersey had Toronto in block blue letters until 1981, when it was changed to have "Blue Jays" in white "split script", which was worn until 1988 and looks to be the version of choice now. The power blues were never worn at home until 2000 (as mentioned in the OP) for a flashback game with the Twins.

Frank - I was specifically referring to the fact the press release stated the powder uniforms would have "Toronto" across the front and the press photos of Vernon have "Blue Jays" written on them. I think you may have missed that in my post.

Fair enough, Kieran.

I was never a fan of the old powder blues, but I guess it's only once a week.

More like once a fortnight, given that on average they'll play on the road every other week.
