A good night for the better Jay prospects hitting HRs.  Arencibia, Snider and Tolisano each went deep as the affiliates went 3-3 on the night.

Syracuse 7 at Buffalo 8

Not a good night on the mound for Bill Murphy.  And really, despite 7 runs and 12 hits the offense wasn't too notable either.  A Thigpen double was the only extra base hit.  Melilo had three hits while Coats, Watson, and Luna had two each.

Trenton 6 at New Hampshire 4

NH only had 5 hits, but 2 run HRs by Arencibia and Snider yielded 4 runs.  I'm not sure what it means, but Arencibia hasn't walked in AA in 64 ABs.

Brandon Magee had a good outing going 6 innings and allowing only an unearned run in the first (although that was due in part to Magee's two errors).  Magee struck out just 2 and has 36 Ks in 97.1 innings against 43 BBs.  He'll need to get both numbers going in opposite directions to get any kind of sustained success.

Dunedin 7 at Dayton 4

Ray Gonzalez started and pitched ok.  He gave up 3 runs over 5 innings, although only K'd 1.

Sanchez had 3 hits, Calderone 2, and Emanuelle 2.

Great Lakes 2 at Lansing 6

Cheng started and pitched 5 solid innings giving up 1 run on 6 hits and 1 BB.  He struck out 3.

John Tolisano was the big hitter of the night going 2-4 with 5 RBIs, 3 of which came on a HR.  Kevin Ahrens also had 2 hits and has been pretty consistent so far putting up a .269/.335/.370 line.  Not great, but pretty good for a HS player drafted last year.

Staten Island 4 at Auburn 2

Auburn managed just 4 hits on the night.  The most notable item is that 4th rounder Robert Sobolewski got his first start at 3B after signing.  There was a rumor that David Cooper was promoted, but he went 0-4 last night so as of last night he was still in Auburn.

GCL Jays 8 at GCL Tigers 6

Lots of hits for the Jays here.  Welinton Ramirez went 4-5 with 2 doubles.  He's a 21 year old, 6'2" OF, from the Dominican Republic and is hitting .365/.393/.577.  Other than that I don't know much about him.

Talley, R Diaz, and Gonzalez each had 2 hits.  Diaz's GCL average is .467 in his 30 ABs since coming back from injury.

3 Stars!:
3 - JP Arencibia & Travis Snider
2 - Welinton Ramirez
1 - John Tolisano

An interesting link I hit today...

Provides all the boxes for just the Jay's players for yesterday's games. Nice for a quick check.

Btw, Luna is doing decently.  286/345/425 this year while playing SS and 3B (270/324/388 84 OPS+ in majors lifetime over 771 PA).  OK, just a AAAA guy at 27.  Still, quite the depth in backup infielders we're seeing between Inglett, Scutaro, Eckstein, McDonald and now Luna (Adams doesn't count anymore at 206/302/339 in AAA and limited to 2B and OF, now 2 for 17 in July).  Guess JP didn't want to be caught without backups eh?

Arencibia has thrown out 6 of 9 would be basebstealers at AA, while Jeroloman has thrown out 34 of 51.

Does anyone know how many outfield assists Moises Sierra has racked up so far?  I suspect the secret it out about his arm.

I personally quit counting after I watched him throw his sixth guy out at the plate.  The unfortunate thing is that I expect him to throw guys out now and that is unfair to him.  He has the best and most accurate arm of any player that I have ever seen at this level and maybe at any level.

I can tell you that the scouts definitely have noticed his arm.

Pardon me for the misprint, but Jeroloman has thrown out 17 of 51, not 34.

Did he pitch at all in the past?

From Baseball-Reference - Moises Sierra has 8 assists in 80 games plus 2 double plays, nothing too amazing (Jesse Barfield used to get 20+ a year in the majors even after everyone knew they should never ever run on him).  Sadly, also 8 errors.  He had 6 assists last year in just 43 games.

I'm not sure what it means, but Arencibia hasn't walked in AA in 64 ABs.

Perhaps it means that he is a lesser prospect than Ron Karkovice was in 1986 in double A. Arencibia's 11/60 W/K over this year means that he's got quite a ways to go.

Blue Jays' released Kane Davis and Jamie Vermilyea this past week.  Poor Vermilyea... he did extremely well in his limited time in the majors and got tossed around between AAA and AA.  He was completely misused.

Kane Davis comes as no surprise...I'm sure Murphy could be gone soon.

In addition to not yet walking, Arencibia has fairly weak numbers against RHP in AA so far while his numbers are boosted by destroying lefthanders.

In high-A ball he had very good production against RHP (better than against LHP I think) so hopefully it isn't a meaningful trend.

I don't particularly have a problem with a guy not walking much if he's hitting for average and power.  I do think it is really weird for a guy to walk ZERO times in the span of several weeks though.

Does anyone know why Brandon Camardese moved from the Fishercats to Auburn and has been on reserve for over a month? What would the reasoning behind this be?

Karkovice had one ugly swing and AA was the apex of his hitting career.  He was pretty awful before and after.  If we could somehow fuse Arencibia's power with Jeroloman's patience we'd have a Hall of Famer.

Snider and Arencibia strike again with back to back homers in the 9th to give the Fisher Cats the win. Not a bad couple of nights in NH's prospect land.

I don't mind if Arenciba isn't walking. He's hitting for power and good average right now. I know he'll regress, but he's a catcher. That's his skill. I'm not interested in another "conversion" project aka Thigpen... we need a good catcher for the future. If he is a good catching catcher, who could project to hit .280 in the majors with good pop (.450 + slugging %), I don't mind if he walks like Ivan Rodrigeuz. That will be more then adequate production from the C position. He appears to have a good arm.

And to be fair, if he's a catcher, when he gets on base he'll probably just "CLOG THEM UP" anyways........

Sorry for the double post, but I'd like to fill out my comment above a little more.

I understand that walking is an important skill to have because it shows you have the ability to swing at strikes and not just everything thrown your way (for better or worse). So it is definitely something worth watching as he moves up and pitchers get better.

What I meant was, I don't care if walking isn't a trait of his. As long as he can continue to hit for good"ish" average and good pop, he'll be very valuable as a catcher.  Because I can't watch him I don't know what he's like as a player. Is he just having a really hot stretch right now and is hitting everything thrown his way (you know that zone you could get into where it didn't matter where the pitch was thrown, you just felt like you could hit anything), or is he swinging at everything and hitting some and missing others? (i'd be more concerned about the latter).  Although, all things considered, it would sure be nice if he could round out his skill set a bit more.
