Revenge was sweet for the Fisher Cats after an extra-innings loss last night, Travis Snider and JP Arencibia had three hits each.  The most hits by a junior Jay was four by Raul Barron helping Lansing to the win.  On the other hand Syracuse were held to one hit by Chase Wright and two relievers.

Scranton 6  Syracuse 0

One hit was all the Chiefs could get off Chase Wright and two relievers.  The one hit was by Brian Jeroloman.  Bill Murphy had another tough start, he gave up four runs in 3.1 innings on six hits and five walks.

Portland 2  New Hampshire 9

New Hampshire scored two runs in the fist inning, Travis Snider and JP Arencibia doubled, scoring one run, and David Smith singled in the second run.  The Fisher Cats blew it open with six runs in the fourth.  Smith led off with a double; Andrew Pinckney singled; and Jacob Butler walked to load the bases.  A run then scored on catchers interference; Chris Gutierrez singled in the second run of the inning; Snider singled in another; Arencibia singled in a run; and finally Kyle Phillips singled in two.  Snider homered in the sixth for the ninth run.

Robert Ray was on the hill for the Cats and gave up an unearned run in seven innings.  Seth Overbey relieved Ray and gave up a run in two innings.  Snider and Arencibia were 3-4, Smith had two hits.

Dunedin - scheduled day off

Lansing 4  Wisconsin 2

Chi-Hung Cheng pitched well, five innings, two earned runs.  Joe Wice and Tim Collins each pitched two shutout innings in relief.  Down 2-0, Lansing tied the game in the third.  Moises Sierra singled, Justin Jackson walked, both runners moved up on a wild pitch, and Raul Barron singled to drive in both runners.  Lansing took the lead in the sixth, David Cooper led off with a single, moved up on a ground out, and scored on a single by Johermyn Chavez.  In the seventh Jackson doubled and scored on another single by Barron.  Barron was 4-5 with 3 RBI's.  Cooper was 2-4.

Auburn 5  Jamestown 3

Auburn scored five single runs in five innings.  Three came via the long ball, Mike McDade in the fourth; Adam Amar in the sixth; and Robert Sobolewski in the ninth.  In the first McDade singled in Chris Demons who had been hit by a pitch and in the third Demons hit a sac fly to score Bryan Kervin who had doubled.

Josh Wells started and pitched three innings, he gave up two runs on six hits.

McDade had three hits, Amar and Joel Collins had two hits each.

I'm rather surprised McDade is doing so well in Auburn.  Maybe it was a wake-up call.  I'm sure he's poised to repeat Lansing next year.  With the way Amar is playing, he should get to be in Dunedin next year.  I looked at the kid's college stats and he had one heck of a junior year, so I'm not sure why he was undrafted.  His OPS is sitting at .999 right now to put him in the top 3 in the NYPL.  And the fact he only has 10 strikeouts is great too.  Let's hope for the best - we need real power prospects.

Robert (Bobby) Bell, our 18th rounder this year out of Rice is off to great start to his pro career.

19.1 innings, 8 hits, 2 er, 0 walks, 27 strikeouts, 0.93 era.  Could be a late round steal.

I didn't realize it, but Snider is on some kind of roll - a new kind for him.  He's had 13 walks and only 6 strikeouts in his last ten games.  My rough math has his line at .323/.523/.523 over that span.

Amar went undrafted because he had a senior power outage after being a pre-season All-American; his average was very good, but teams were understandably non-plussed by a four-year first baseman who struggled to hit for power with a metal bat. He's definitely raising some eyebrows right now, and he certainly has a power build. Still, I'm not sure that I'm ready to consider him a real prospect just yet.

Lansing - Magnuson, Chavez, Sierra
Auburn - Bell, Crawford, Daly, Farquar, Walden, Wright, Collins, House, McDade, Sobolewski, Van Kirk
GCL - Antolin, Talley, Jiminez, Pasornicky, Wilson, Brisker)
Dominican - Pierre

No mention of Scott Richmond, Sneeps?   In development terms, he is still a prospect, despite his age.  Or do you have an age limit on your list?
Also, I would put Diaz and Ray into your top 20.   Ray is moving up fast.  The injuries this year have made it hard to assess Diaz, but the Jays thought very highly of him when they promoted him briefly to the majors after they dumped Frank Thomas.

Nice job on the list - I hate to nitpick, but Snider actually has 21 Hr combined between Dunedin and NH.

The Jays suddenly look like they have some young power coming up.  Baseball is funny.  It seemed the Jays had great pitching depth, but then Janssen and McGowan went down, Litsch collapsed, and it's likely the Burnett will be gone soon.  Suddenly that pitching depth vanished, but the system that didn't have any good hitting prospects, save Snider, now looks more promising.  Lind is finally hitting in the majors like he did in the minors and Snider and Arencibia are both close in AA and are both on pace to hit 30+ homers if given 600 at-bats.  Cooper is demolishing A- and as an advanced college hitter, I wouldn't be surprised if he moved up quickly, and Campbell looks like he could be a good bat to have around if the Jays can find a position for him.

It just goes to show you that when it comes to prospects things can change very quickly.

Kevin Gray's blog tells us that Snider's assist last night was very impressive.  Scott Campbell may not be disabled after Tuesday's game, but perhaps he was suspended for comments made about the umpiring.  J.P. Arencibia was similarily unimpressed with the umpires, and was tossed yesterday in the seventh inning.

My rough math has his line at .323/.523/.523 over that span.

Rough indeed.  A better stab at slugging puts Snider's line at .323/.523/.742 over the past 10 games.

Sneeps:  No love for Mr Jaspe?

I think he was suspended for awhile and has only played 40 games but .320/.378/.483 is good, especially for a catcher

Sneeps - Thursday, July 31 2008 @ 05:21 PM EDT (#189946) #
I suppose Richmond is worth mentioning, but he seems like a AAAA'r to me.

Snider does in fact has 21 dingers, thank you for correcting me.  And Jaspe seems like organizational fodder to me.
